Tuesday 27th September – and today is our nephew, Neil’s birthday – our best wishes to you Neil. The traffic noise must have calmed dramatically as we both had a good night’s sleep although we were up and about before 7:00am. Blackall, our next destination is barely an hour’s drive away so we didn’t have to hurry ourselves. I took time to part process a blog, taking advantage of the free internet connection on the caravan park. Graham, meanwhile, mooched about chatting to neighbours and gradually putting stuff away ready to depart. Eventually we hit the road and had another steady journey – very little traffic means we can travel at our own pace although with such long and straight roads it’s often difficult to know if we’re holding anything up. We reached Blackall in good ... read more

Monday 26th September – today is the birthday of young Charlie Brown who lives in Tewkesbury. We hope you had a great birthday, Charlie. With this blog we have reached the milestone of 200 blogs – for those who have read every one – good on you!! Thanks very much for staying with us on our journey around Aus. We are still remarkably enthusiastic, mainly because we are always coming across more and more fantastic places to write about. Today it is the turn of Ilfracombe (again) and Barcaldine. We were in no rush today as, even with a planned stop and picnic lunch at Ilfracombe, Barcaldine is no more than 110 kilometers from Longreach so we knew we would arrive in good time. In fact, we had contemplated going on to Blackall today, another 110 ... read more

Friday 23rd September – and we set off for Longreach, our next destination. We had heard that like Winton it was also very busy so we had booked ahead to ensure we had a space. Actually we had booked another “en suite” facility as they seemed reasonably priced and we like the independence that they provide. In a way, we regretted making the booking as we would have liked another day or so in Winton. For a small outback town, they really knew how to organise a good time and it was good to see it so well supported. The journey of about 180 kilometers was easy and, without much traffic about, we were able to “cruise” at a slower speed than normal. Occasionally a road-train or a faster moving car and caravan would creep by ... read more

Tuesday 20th September - our attempts at a very early start didn’t quite work out and many people left before us. We didn’t get away until 8:30am – actually not bad for us but 8 o’clock would have been better. We had over 250 kilometers to travel and we wanted to arrive in Hughenden early enough to see a bit of the town. It has a connection with “dinosaurs” and a more recent history of sheep and cattle farming. We made pretty good progress and stopped at The Burra Lookout for our morning break. Progress continued to be good and we made Hughenden just after noon. We were familiar with the caravan park having stayed there before and booked a “drive through” site for just one night. That meant we didn’t have to unhitch but we ... read more

Today, Monday 19th September, we had a very lazy start. We had a couple of things in mind to do but they didn’t require much planning so I took the opportunity to do some washing. Later I needed to do a bit of shopping but before that we had it in mind to do a walking tour of Charters Towers’ city centre – The Square Mile. We parked in the Woolies car park as that is where we would end up for the shopping and there are no parking restrictions there. We walked the short distance to the Information Centre to return our CD and map and to get our deposit back. Much of the walking tour was to buildings nearby so we were able to commence the tour immediately. We had driven by many of ... read more

As if to confirm we had made the right decision to move on, Saturday 17th September greeted us very early with the noise of kiddies cycling and shouting. Clearly their parents have no respect for the comfort of others (you can’t blame the kids) as they were let loose before 6:30am and seemingly with no supervision at all. Multiply that three or four times and you may realise why we thought it a good idea to “head for the hills” today. Traditionally, this school holiday period means a seaside holiday and with the weather forecast promising perfect seaside conditions it is not surprising that places like Rollingstone cater so obviously for young families. It influenced our thoughts about destinations today and we were convinced that an inland location would be more suited to us for a ... read more

First of all – Happy Birthday to my brother Rod - it was actually yesterday but we are a bit behind! We hope you had a lovely day. On Thursday 15th September we were moving on to one of two destinations. A return to Townsville had been the favourite in our advanced planning but we both had a sneaky feeling for a place called Rollingstone. (As we travelled we contemplated why this place had been named ‘Rollingstone’. We thought of ‘The Rolling Stones’ and were able to name quite a few of their hit records – sad or what! Later on we found out that Rollingstone had been given the name because of the large round boulders in the local creek. Anyway, it’s pronounced Rolingstun!) We had read encouraging reports about the Big 4 caravan park ... read more

Ingham is just 130 kilometers from Mission Beach so, as is often the case lately, we arrived in the town by mid-morning on Tuesday 13th September. We remembered that we had stopped there for a cuppa on the way up country and found the same picnic area this morning for our tea break. We still hadn’t decided which caravan park we would head for. We knew of one on the coast at Lucinda but we thought we would probably prefer to stay in town and to visit Lucinda as a little excursion. So we headed for Palm Tree Tourist Park and checked in for two nights - what a contrast to Mission Beach! True we were some way from the beach but, at just $29 dollars per night, with excellent sites and facilities, we realised that ... read more

Saturday 10th – after our fantastic trip of yesterday we decided to have a relatively quiet day for what would be our last day at Lake Placid. We knew we would need to do some shopping at some time but we were in no hurry. As the morning went on Graham wondered if Dale and Alison, our companions from yesterday, would fancy a trip to Smithfield. Travelling in a Winnebago is especially comfortable but practicalities like shopping are sometimes difficult because of the challenge of parking such a large vehicle at or near to a shopping precinct. Alison was thrilled with the idea and Dale had some electrical items he wanted to purchase so a trip to the shops was just what they needed. We arranged to meet up at 11:00am and in the meantime Graham ... read more

RING OF BRIGHT WATER – We wouldn’t normally choose a well known title as the heading for one of our blogs but this one has a particular significance. Read on: Friday 9th September – today was the day of our very early start – a 7:30 pick up from the caravan park. We weren’t alone as another couple, Dale and Alison, had also arranged for a day on one of the Frankland Islands. The day out would eventually last until about 6:00pm but for now we were being ferried by the boss of the company, no less, to a rendezvous point near the centre of Cairns where we were met by a small coach. On board already were about 10 people, mainly Japanese, and soon after another couple arrived. So with the coach now fully laden ... read more
