After the excitement of yesterday, Boxing Day started very overcast but predominantly dry. We had had a splendid Christmas dinner at Grant’s and Anna’s and the whole event was extremely successful given the problems that the weather had caused. The TV news this morning was full of the dramatic Melbourne weather scenes with the size of hail stones growing with each weather report until they were, apparently, the size of cricket balls!!! Scenes of broken car wind screens were shown and of quite a bit of property damage. In hindsight we escaped pretty well but we were sorry to have missed the White’s evening party. Today the famous Boxing Day Test started with Australia hosting India. We were there last year when England were the visitors and went again on the fourth day when England, with ... read more

Today, 24 December, was dear Sarah’s birthday but, because of the time difference, we had to wait until evening our time before we tried to make contact. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SARAH!! It’s at times like this that we wish we were back home in the UK. Overnight it had cooled a little but the temperature soon began to rise along with the bright sun as we awoke fairly early. This morning we thought to catch the tram into the city and to visit the famous Victorian Markets which are supposed to be fairly special at Christmas time. The nearest tram line (the same one that goes past Daphne’s house) starts about 3 kilometers away at Vermont South but even though that is another 8 kilometers further out of the city than Daphne’s, the same daily $7 fee ... read more

Tuesday morning (20th December) was beautiful and, with the weather forecast suggesting it would warm up dramatically between now and Christmas, Mark was out early adding chemicals to the pool to keep it clean ready for Christmas Day when the temperature may get near the 40 degree mark. All the kids were soon up and about with Zoe mercilessly teasing the other two because she had finished school already but Ken and Beth still had three more days to go. Simone was ready for her meeting in Shepperton and Mark would go with her and they would have a chance for some Christmas shopping together before they had to be home to meet the kids from school. Zoe, a very tall and, apart from the teasing, a very mature13 year old, felt she was grown up ... read more

Sunday 18th December – the morning was very overcast and, maybe because of the early birdsong, Graham was up and about before 7 o’clock. He couldn’t sleep but was still tired and watched the early morning news on the TV and then a Triathlon event from Auckland. After that he dozed in the chair on and off until about 11:00am. Meanwhile, I had prepared sandwiches and a flask in readiness for another day out. Today we wanted to spend some time in “Bushranger” country – an area where, in the late 1800s, infamous outlaws took shelter because of the denseness of the woodland and the difficulty in traversing the hilly terrain. Not far from Mansfield is Stringy Bark Creek where the most notorious bushranger, Ned Kelly, committed the crime that made him a “Dead or Alive” ... read more

Friday 16th December - we were both up early as we were hoping for a fairly prompt start on our trip to be re-united with the caravan. Graham carried everything down to the car as each bag was packed but it was a bit of a “balancing act” making sure Mad Micky was nowhere near when the front door was opened. As a young kitten he’s not allowed outside yet but, given his guile, speed and general athletic ability, we’re sure it won’t be long before he fools Daphne into letting him out accidentally. Daphne will have her hands full over the next few days with Micky, Christmas shopping and cake and pudding baking. In addition she has been asked by a very busy Grant and Anna if she could provide a meal for David and ... read more

Monday (12th December) dawned a bit dull and overcast and we were all a bit slow to get going. I had some parcels to post and Graham wanted to get the damaged tyre fixed so we drove the short distance to Burwood where a tyre depot is situated. They said they’d be able to fix the tyre for a modest price and I was able to post my parcels so all went well. Back at Daphne’s we made a hasty decision to visit Chadstone Shopping Centre – a major decision given the size of the place and the nearness to Christmas. There were a few things that both Daphne and I wanted to buy so we both felt it was the right decision. Graham just came along for the ride. Our departure was actually delayed somewhat ... read more

Saturday 10 December dawned with a bit of cloud but also with a bit of a breeze and the sun breaking through – ideal for drying the washing we had to do before leaving the holiday house. Packing up, loading up, clearing up and tidying up were the important duties this morning. We all set about doing our bit to ensure the house was left as spick and span as possible. Graham cleaned out the wood-burner, Daphne and I both did some cleaning and then we set about hoovering and dusting until everything looked perfect. We had to wait a while for the washing to dry but we were in no hurry to leave this idyllic place so we had a last visit to the “front” at Peterborough and admired the views and wished we weren’t ... read more

Thursday morning (8th December) dawned with a bit of excitement - Graham spotted a fire engine parked at a neighbour’s house. On closer inspection (being nosey) we could see flames billowing into the sky very close to a substantial fence but, fortunately, some way from the house. A garden fire had got out of hand – it was a very warm and calm morning – and even the three volunteer firemen were having difficulty controlling it as the flames threatened to spread. The “garden fire” had been well stocked with, amongst other things, large planks of wood, old doors and frames, anything that would burn. In hindsight, it was very irresponsible to have a fire of such a size but I don’t suppose the old chap who lived there dreamt that it would become such a ... read more

Tuesday 6th December was another day that started with glorious sun-shine. There was a bit of a breeze and out of the sun it was a little chilly – Daphne found it very cold!! We were a bit undecided as to what to do. Yesterday’s trip, although not far, was very tiring and we’d agreed not to have two tiring days on the trot. So a casual meander along the coast towards, but not as far as, Warnambool was the order of the day – though not before we’d had a mid-morning cuppa and toast to set ourselves up. At about 11:00am we set off in the car for the nearest lookout – we could have walked it but we intended going on further. The Bay of Martyrs is fantastic with easy access down to a ... read more
