On a sandy riverbed in Damaraland I wrestled a hulk of a man for rights over the sleeping slot next to mine on our tarpaulin. Though the battle was real, it was all in good fun. Holding on for dear life while he dragged and tossed me about, I felt so alive, so happy, so free. And while lost in the moment, I was found. In Namibia I removed the lid from the box I was in. I stepped out and stretched my legs. I filled my lungs with life. I said No to fear, and in so doing, opened my heart. I pulled off the masks of the roles I'd been playing, until I got down to me, in my own skin, undisguised. I let go. I learned that just as one can flutter too ... read more

When you let go of fear, when you release yourself from the ties of your safe, secure routine, you may find yourself upon a koppie overlooking elephants in a riverbed under the setting Namibian sun. You may find yourself forming strong, intimate bonds with a group of people who yesterday were strangers. You may find yourself. I did. ... read more

Here it is, August, just nine months since my misadventures in South Africa, and I'm off to Namibia. I am quite surprised to find myself in this position so soon. My friend Kirsten will be joining me this time around. Stay tuned for updates! ... read more

Portland to Atlanta to Johannesburg to Pretoria to... wait - stop here and turn around while you still can. As it turns out, I can't tolerate antimalarials. Went a bit nutty, I did, on top of the worst nausea I've ever had and an absolute inability to sleep. After days without food or sleep, with vertigo, fever, and increasing paranoia (yeah, paranoia), which all led to increasing homesickness, I chose the only good option and came home. No vervet monkeys, no safari at Kruger National Park. While I'm certainly disappointed, I don't regret anything. I'm so fortunate to have had the opportunity, and I have learned many things, both leading up to and during the trip. I am grateful for all who helped me along the way. Tomorrow I leave for Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I'll ... read more

It's funny how we measure time and how those measures change. When I first decided to volunteer at Vervet Monkey Foundation and scheduled the time away, there were 7 months between me and my departure - more than half a year, I told myself, plenty of time to research mosquito nets, sandals, cameras, etc, and plenty of time to summon the courage to embark on my first solitary journey. Those 7 months straddled summer, and I gave in to the reality that with my eye on November, the sunshine months would fly by. Too few barbecues later, I'm now measuring time before departure in weeks not months. I've got the sandals but no mosquito net. I've been through one round of inoculations, which took 3 weeks to recover from, and I'm set for round two this ... read more

North America » Mexico » Baja California Sur » La Paz September 26th 2006

When my husband was a young boy, his family lived on a sailboat, docking here and there while they made their way south from Oregon and north into the Sea of Cortez. His favorite place was La Paz, and he promised himself as a boy that he would return one day. As soon as I stepped out of the bus station and looked up from the broken sidewalk, seeing for the first time the beautiful malecon dotted with palm trees alongside the sea, I understood why. La Paz is nothing I expected it to be, and so much more. It is slow but steady; relaxed but not at all casual. It's joggers in the heat of the day wearing full track suits and cologne. Extended families enjoying ice cream outside the corner shop. It's roosters crowing ... read more
