I don't know if anyone caught it, but we never did get to take part in the festivities in Chiang Mai. It was my main reason for going there and the main reason for timing our trip when I did, but things happen and plans have no choice but to change. For those who would like to know about Loy Kratong, please read this great blog that was posted by someone else there at the same time: http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Thailand/North-West-Thailand/Chiang-Mai/blog-450588.html Onward to Laos Even as we were circling to land in Luang Prabang I could see that I was going to love it. Coconut palms pierced the clear blue skies. The muddy mighty Mekong River painted a swath of brown as far as the eye could see. And tiled roof houses stood shoulder to shoulder along the streets. ... read more

We spent the day at Patara Elephant Farm on a magnificent adventure. Elephants are lovable animals, BUT, they eat constantly and they poop every 2 hours, about 6 or 7 bocce-ball-sized whoppers. And you don't want to stand behind them.... This particular operation is unique in the Chiang Mai area in that their mission is to increase the elephant population by natural means, as opposed to the artificial insemination done at other places, which, as Pat says, produces babies, but also produces mothers who have no idea why they are pregnant and thus don't develop maternal instincts. An interesting tidbit is that all the domestic elephants in Thailand have microchips embedded in their skin and they are licensed, not like a cat or a dog, but by the Department of Commerce, just as a truck is. ... read more

Bruce's First Overnight Train Ride The train was a new adventure! We sprang for a first class sleeper car, which meant we had our own compartment with a banquette that turned into upper and lower bunks (guess who got which). There was a tiny sink in the room and at the end of the car were 2 toilets, one western style, the other a Thai-style squat toilet. It's not for nothing that I have been strenghthening my thigh muscles at the gym for the past 6 months. We were so exhauted (Bruce still very bummed) that we were asleep by 9 o'clock and slept until the customary 3:30. Breakfast, ordered the night before, arrived at about 6:30. We were the usual hour late into Chiang Mai station, which gave us a couple daylight hours to ... read more

Onward Here it is, my usual 3:30 wake-up time. I think I'll try to keep this schedule, as it allows me to write this blog after a good night's sleep and with nothing else to do. It will also hold me in good stead for the anticipated rooster early wake-up calls, the witnessing of the giving of alms to the monks at dawn and the sunrises at Angkor. Since the sun sets around 6 PM in this part of the world and since night life is not a part of OUR life, we can feel free to go to bed by 8 and everything will work out just fine. This morning we were picked up at our hotel by Dara, Tu, and Tu's son. Dara was a school teacher in Nakhon Phanom in 1965 when Bruce ... read more

I Can't Believe We Fell For It! I never thought in my wildest dreams that 3:30 AM would be my preferred working time, but here it is again. Still can't get connected, so you will probably get these blogs in one big batch. I just learned that we have WiFi in our room although I can't seem to figure out how to access it; no matter - the internet, even at the hotel computers, is down. Yesterday morning, after a lovely breakfast at our hotel we started out for a DIY tour of the top spots of Bangkok - the Royal Palace, Wat Phra Keo and Wat Arun, the temple of the dawn. Having scoped out the various methods of getting there we set off by cab, hailed by the hotel concierge. I think that ... read more

Bangkok Photos Here, belatedly, are a few photos of Bangkok. I tried with no success to get my wifi fixed on my netbook, so I am still having to copy the blog and the photos onto a flash drive then go to a public computer to upload both to TravelBlog. We'll be on to Luang Prabang, Laos today for 5 days so hopefully I'll be able to find somebody there to fix it ... read more

I apologize right off the bat. It's 6 AM and I'm starving. We arrived in Bangkok last evening after being awake since 3:30 AM and then sleeping only about 2 hours of a 20-hour flight. This morning I've been awake since 3:22 - and that's plus a 13-hour time difference. I couldn't remember either the configuration of the hotel room so as not to trip over a chair or whether my netbook would beep when I turned it on, either of which would surely wake up my comotose husband. This will not be a revelation of wats, of stupas, or of klongs - those we have yet to see; we arrived last night and will not see the light of day for another hour or so. The hunger is driving me to write about the workings ... read more

Gettin' Antsy The plane tickets are purchased, the itinerary is set, the hotels booked, the clothes bought, the shots endured. It's 7 days and counting! What have I forgotten (whatever it is I'll be sure to remember it as soon as I get on the train headed for the airport)? What will go wrong (hopefully only things that will result in a fun new adventure)? I hope that I can do as promised and provide you with some interesting stories, observations, and photos of our 50th anniversary trip to Southeast Asia! We leave October 24 by NJTransit train to NYC, then Long Island Railroad to Jamaica Station and the Monorail to JFK Airport. It's amazing to me that, except for a mile-long ride to the train station, we can go from our house to Bangkok without ... read more
