We said goodbye to Gena, Bob and Milo this morning at the campground. They left ahead of us, on their way to visit El Morro and El Malpais National Monuments in New Mexico. We’ve been to both of those parks, so we got on I-40 and headed east. We stopped twice for fuel and once for lunch. Now that we’re heading in the direction of home, it’s hard to be patient about getting there. We heard from Gena when they reached Grants, NM, they were only about 40 miles behind us. There was the possibility that we would meet up at a campground tonight, but they stopped in Cedar Crest and we continued on to Santa Rosa. We did make one stop this morning at Walnut Canyon National Monument outside of Flagstaff. There are literally hundreds ... read more

Bob and Gena left the campground early this morning, heading for Wupatki and Sunset Crater, two parks we’ve already seen. They ended up going to Walnut Canyon, also. We dawdled around and left the campground around our usual time of 9:00 and went into the Canyon Village to mail some postcards and buy some more. We stopped at McDonald’s in Tusayan, outside the park gates, for breakfast. Those rip-off artists charge in-park prices, more than $14 for 2 McGriddles and a large Iced tea. They’d make more money if they charged regular prices; people would flock in for cheap food. The wind blew strongly all night and continued all day. The dust blew everywhere, further blurring the mountain views. At Flagstaff we stopped at Black Bart’s RV and Steak Joint, as agreed upon last night with ... read more

Sun, 3 June We left Jacob Lake, heading for the south rim of the Grand Canyon. We drove past the beautiful Vermillion Cliffs to the Navajo Bridge crossing the Colorado River at Marble Canyon. The river is a striking green color here as it passes through the red canyon. We saw rafts on the river and wished we were down there doing that. At Cameron we turned west toward the Desert View/East entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. After setting up camp in Desert View campground, which didn’t take long as there are no hookups, we went to Desert View visitor center and the Watchtower. After a few pictures we drove west toward Grand Canyon Village, stopping at several overlooks along the way. In the village we managed to find the kennel so Bob could make ... read more

We closed up the campers and left Bob and Gena’s rig and our camper at the campground in Glendale while we drove to Cedar Breaks National Monument. The road was a constant climb to over 10,000’. At the visitor center we got our first glimpse; a condensed version of Bryce Canyon, with hoodoos, wonderful colors and layers and great vistas of surrounding mountain ranges and valleys. The visitor center and overlook were at 10,350’, which left me feeling a little breathless. After taking tons of pictures and listening to a ranger tell us about the geology of Cedar Breaks, we drove back to get our campers and move on. We drove south to Kanab then on to Jacob Lake, first through lush green canyons, then high desert. After setting up at the campground at Camper Village, ... read more

We left Ely, NV, driving east to Great Basin National Park. The visitor center is at Baker, but 4 miles up the road is the visitor center for Lehman Caves, which used to be a National Monument, but is now included in Great Basin Natl Park. At the Lehman Caves visitor center we left Bob and Gena’s rig and our camper and drove up the Wheeler Peak Road in our van. The road was pretty steep and winding, but the views were magnificent. The valley below and the mountains all around were colorful and amazing to see. After picking up the campers we continued on into Utah, now on Hwy 21. This road could have qualified as the loneliest road; I don’t think we saw half a dozen other vehicles in more than 70 miles. As ... read more

Wed, 30 May We took the day off from traveling, as we were all tired of the road and setting up and taking down campers. The four of us had a big breakfast together, thank you Bob and Gena for that. Then I spent the morning doing laundry. Afterwards, Kerry and I went to Gardnerville, NV, to visit his cousin Jerry and his wife, Barbara. It was a pretty drive down to their house and they have wonderful vistas from all windows. We had a nice visit and a delicious lunch. When we got back to the campground, we picked up Gena and went to Walmart to do some shopping. Afterwards Gena stayed with Milo and Bob walked over the casino next door with Kerry and me. We played a few slots, then got two of ... read more

Monday, 28 May It was 33 degrees this morning at 6, but had warmed into the upper 40’s by the time we left the campground. The north road into Crater Lake National Park is closed due to heavy snow cover, so we went around to the west and up to the south entrance. As the elevation rose, so did the depth of the snow drifts along the sides of the roads and in the woods. Inside the park you could only see the roof of the Visitor Center and the Administration Building. The parking lot was mostly cleared, but the drifts were well over the tops of the cars. We drove up to the Rim Lodge and to Discovery Point and took pictures of the magnificent lake and surrounding mountains. There was only 1 mile of ... read more

It was overcast and damp when we left Troutdale this morning. We found Hwy 26 and made our way toward the Mt. Hood recreational areas. There was a good bit of traffic heading that way, lots of cars with snow boards on the roof. As we climbed higher we could see there was still plenty of snow in the higher elevations. We climbed into the clouds and realized we might not get to see Mt. Hood, but you sure can’t control the weather. After Blue Box Pass, elevation 4,024’, we descended into the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. First we drove through thick woods, then beautiful pastures with many horses grazing, then up into high desert and rocky mesas. What wonderful vistas. Off to the west we could snow-covered Mt. Jefferson at 10,497’. At some point we ... read more

This morning was sunny and mostly clear. The standing water from yesterday evening’s hard rain was mostly gone. We drove east to Hwy 410, getting an occasional glimpse of Mt. Rainier. Hwy 410 was beautiful, with dark forests, the green waters of the White River visible through the trees. However it was very bumpy. It made my adventure road feel like a newly paved super highway. Well, not quite. At Cayuse Pass, elevation 4694’, there was plenty of snow along the sides of the road. The road had steadily climbed to the pass and then, of course, we went down. It wasn’t too bad, but Kerry does hate those steep downhills. After Cayuse, the road south became hwy 123 for a while before joining US Hwy 12. While in the Mt. Rainier National Park, the scenery ... read more

Thurs, 24 May It rained overnight and most of the morning. We had just about decided to stay at our campground in Hoquiam another night when the sun came out. We quickly broke camp and got back on Hwy 101, which pretty much loops the Olympic Peninsula, circling the Olympic National Park. Our first stop was the ranger station at Kalaloch, on the west coast of Washington, but the ranger was out to lunch, so we drove to the picnic/day use area instead. There we walked down to the beautiful beach and took a few pictures. We drove next to Ruby Beach, just a few miles north. Another spectacular beach with postcard scenery. We then turned inland and found the road to the Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center in Olympic National Park. The road runs along ... read more
