Obfuscator writes: We left the roach motel in Little Rock and headed to the State Capitol. We had seen the exterior of the building the day before, but little else. We were pleased to find that everyone at the capitol building was really friendly. The parking lot attendant talked to us about all sorts of things, and the security guard asked politely if we had anything dangerous (we didn't). A security guard outside the Senate showed us the chamber and explained a bunch of stuff, because they were going to be starting a special session very shortly. The building itself is rather pretty, with some really nice marble stairways that open up to the Senate and House of Representatives. In some of the hallways, and in both chambers, they have pretty stained glass skylights too, which ... read more

Obfuscator writes: The night of storms in Texarkana continued through the morning. We drove into town to check out some of the sights. Of course, since it was basically pouring on us, we didn't feel it necessary to look too closely. We did stop at the Post Office which straddles the state line, and is quite lovely. In front of it is a little statue to the Confederacy (of course), which was also picturesque, and crosses the state line as well. We drove northeast from there, heading toward Hot Springs National Park. We stopped briefly in Hope, Arkansas to see the first home of President Clinton. It was closed though, since it was a Sunday, and we drove on. Eventually we did get to Hot Springs, which is rather peculiar, really. The National Park surrounds the ... read more

Obfuscator writes: A day on the road. We left Houston in late morning, after hanging out with J for a bit and leaving our copy of Firefly with him (since he hadn't seen the whole series). We drove north and north and north. We stopped in some town, perhaps around Nacogdoches, to eat some lunch. Our chosen eatery was a Whataburger, a chain that you can find all over the south, and never in the north. Onaxthiel and I had both never tried them before, so we figured we should give it a go. Onaxthiel seemed more impressed by them than I was. The food was more expensive than McDonald's, and for about the same quality, as far as I could tell. I guess the portion was a bit bigger, but I wouldn't recommend Whataburger for ... read more

Obfuscator writes: It seemed only appropriate that since we had spent so much time in Florida looking at NASA related things, and our friend J works for NASA, that we see what we could see in Houston. Sometimes you're reminded how lovely it is to have well connected friends. We got up in the morning, and headed in to the Johnson Space Center. Mostly the Johnson Space Center is a lot of offices and labs and so forth, so we didn't take a grand tour or anything. At Kennedy you see all sorts of huge crawlers and rockets and such, because that's where they deal with all the big assembled pieces and shoot them into space. At Johnson they apparently test a lot of the components, but don't generally handle all the fully assembled gear. That's ... read more

Posted by Onaxthiel: There are certain disadvantages to camping in warmer weather. When the nights feel hot in the summer bag, and the morning dew starts accumulating on the bivies again, we know we have been out past the cold part of the season. We have entered the endgame now, the last portion of the trip. The weather tells us, the clutter in the car tells us, and the fact that Obfuscator doesn't feel like adding much to his entries tells us. It's been a great time, but it's ending soon. These are the things that I was considering as we started out for Houston. Entering the largest city of the second largest state in the Union (despite their best efforts) during rush hour could be a serious pain. Luckily we have a few advantages. First ... read more

Posted by Onaxthiel: I like San Antonio. This was convenient when I was stationed there, as not liking your station is an added pain in a generally unpleasant line of work. Even hanging out for three month's worth of weekends, though, there were sites in town I hadn't seen. When you are walking practically everywhere, some things just don't assume the priorities that others do. This morning Obfuscator and I had planned on seeing the Buckhorn, a landmark saloon and museum that features the world's largest collection of antlers from all manner of species. Back in the 19th century, a new rack to add to their collection earned you a free drink, and rare finds could get you several. Along with the horns, they also assembled collections of all sorts of other assorted kitsch, and have ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We got up at a reasonably early time, and hiked around McKinney Falls State Park. McKinney Falls actually has upper and lower sections, neither of which is terribly tall or impressive. They're mostly small cascades, with interesting formations that have been polished through many years of erosion. There are a couple of trails that lead to each, and we enjoyed the nice walk through them, watching a variety of birds as we did. The water looked rather inviting for a good swim, truth be told. The state of Texas has signs warning you not to, though, citing extremely high bacteria counts. We left there and turned south toward San Antonio. Along the way, we stopped in the town of New Braunfels, which Onaxthiel had been told was quite nice while he was in the ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We left Dallas right away in the morning, and headed for Waco. Our first stop was the Branch Davidian Compound outside the city. There we observed the site of one of the greatest tragedies in modern America. There, amidst the ruins of the old compound, is a new church for the sect of Branch Davidians that own the land now. There's a grove of trees with one planted for each of the people who died in the compound, and several memorials, including one to the ATF agents who died, and one to the victims of the Oklahoma City Bombing. We walked the ruins a bit, and figured out where the tornado shelter, buried school bus, and other structures were. It was a pretty sad site, even if the surrounding area was rather pretty, so ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We left Norman, and our gracious host R, before it got too late in the morning. Onaxthiel was glad to be away from cats, though as it turned out, that relief would be short-lived. We drove south, with Dallas as our intended destination for the day. Along the way, we started getting distracted by roadside billboards that kept advertising interesting sounding things. In the town of Paul's Valley, OK, there's a Toy and Action Figure Museum. We detoured for a while to check it out, but found that at 9:30 AM on an Easter Sunday morning, surprise surprise, it was closed. It looked like it might have opened up at 1:00 PM, but we didn't really feel like waiting, so we moved on. Judging from what we could see in the front windows though, ... read more

Posted by: Onaxthiel: Since I am all strung out on Benadryl this morning, I'm having Obfuscator drive this morning, so that any micro sleeps on my part won't have any critical effects. Yesterday started out in Greenleaf state park, the finest of the OK state parks we have seen on this trip. The facilities are good, with hot showers and reasonably sized and equipped camp sites. The grills and abundance of firewood in the wood line meant that we were able to cook easily without cutting into our carried supply of combustibles. The terrain around the park is lovely, as is the whole of eastern OK, a region dominated by rivers, valleys and bluffs. We wanted to make it back towards OKC in the afternoon, so we had decided to only make one stop for the ... read more
