Thelma and Louise
When Judy and I drove across country in 2003 we stopped in Moab and announced we were Thelma and Louise. The person in the tourist information place informed us that Moab had been the location for many of the scenes in the film. Here is more info http://www.moviefone.com/2010/09/29/famous-movie-locations-the-cliff-in-thelma-and-louise-moab-ut/ Enjoy Helen

Running against the wind
My sympathies regarding your struggle with heavy winds. Many a time I have skittered across one or more lanes as local topography changed, and as a result had my heart pounding as I either got hit by a gust or had a steady stream interrupted by a hill. No fun at all. All you can do is hunker down low, and dance with the dust devils. Here's hoping for a smooth tail wind for you tomorrow.

getting poetic
I'm reading George Orwell at the moment and was rather struck by the aptness of this quote to your journey: the context is that he has gone for a drive in the country and got out to stretch his legs. And yes, I know you have your own teeth.. ======= If I'd had a mirror I'd have looked at the whole of myself, though, as a matter of fact, I knew what I looked like already. A fat man of forty-five, in a grey herring-bone suit a bit the worse for wear and a bowler hat. Wife, two kids, and a house in the suburbs written all over me. Red face and boiled blue eyes. I know, you don't have to tell me. But the thing that struck me, as I gave my dental plate the once-over before slipping it back into my mouth, was that IT DOESN'T MATTER. Even false teeth don't matter. I'm fat yes. I look like a bookie's unsuccessful brother yes. No woman will ever go to bed with me again unless she's paid to. I know all that. But I tell you I don't care. I don't want the women, I don't even want to be young again. I only want to be alive. And I was alive that moment when I stood looking at the primroses and the red embers under the hedge. It's a feeling inside you, a kind of peaceful feeling, and yet it's like a flame.

I've been keeping your blog open in case you finished some day. Today I thought, "Might as well close it, but let me take one last look." Surprise! Thanks for entertaining us armchair travelers, or rather computer desk travelers. :-)

Encyclopedia and Mississippi spelling mnemonics
Don't worry about spelling these words Phil. The next time we chat on the telephone I will sing you the schoolyard tunes that every American child learned from Jimminy Cricket and other kids back in the 1960s as useful mnemonics. Keep on trucking!

Buns of steel
The farthest I go on my motorbike is the supermarket (mind you its been raining cats and dogs here for the last eon or so) so you have my total respect on this endeavour. I assume you have packed thermals and palliative salves as you head into less bike-friendly climes. Today's tip: a pair of extra large washing up gloves over your leather ones for when it hurls it down.

Ah the rubber glove treatment...

Off you go, now
Hi Phil, I was wondering if the trip was actually going to happen. I\'m happy for you that it worked out after all, because I know how much you treasure these opportunities for time off on your motorcycle, and it\'s been a couple of years since the last one. Given the unprecedented drought in San Diego, it\'s no stretch of the imagination that you definitely are off to greener pastures. Cheers, Wolfgang

Fortunately for a motorcycle rider they have not been green on this trip so far.

Smuggling
Every time I have taken my bike to the continent from the UK on return, I have been waved into that little shed you don't want to get waved into and my bike virtually taken to bits and my old socks examined forensically . I am certain therefore that your plan for a second career is totally flawed.

Lufthansa
It's a well known fact that all airline names are acronyms. BA > Bloody Awful TWA > The Worst Airline (bankrupt!) SABENA >Such a Bloody Experience Never Again (bankrupt now!) However, we do all know that the German carrier is the finest: LUFTHANSA > Let Us Fondle The Hostesses And Not Say Anything
