Before we left the North Island we completed the best tramp in New Zealand... the Tongoriro Alpine Pass. This trail took us to the base of Ngauruhoe Mountain (AKA Mount Doom). It was a spectacular 19.4 (!) km hike. We hope the pictures entice you to come to NZ soon!... read more

Wow! We can't believe that another week is almost done! We left Whangerei and continued our journey north - as far north as one can get, by land at least. As usual we visited numerous stunning beaches and arrived at Ninety Mile beach with a little light left to explore. When the tide is out, the beach is not only long, but super wide. There are numerous tourist attractions along the beach (we are quite impressed so far with the way they set up the touristy activities - very nonchalant, no glitz). One of the "things to do" is to drive right on the beach when the tide is out to get to some of those off the beaten track places. However, there are huge warnings for soft-sand, quick sand and sink holes. Plus, rental car ... read more

So, we broke our camera today. Well, it kind of broke itself. Waterproof, my a**. But, No worries, mate! We got ourselves a new one. Not as nice, but it'll have to do. Maybe when we return we can try to salvage some early NZ photos, but no new pix today, unfortunately. So, here we are, day 4 in NZ already. To be honest, we've pretty much lost all track of time. Kinda nice, really. But we've realized that we've spent the better part of a week here, and have just visited the tiny top part of the North Island. It's been great, but we don't know if we'll make it to the South Island in time for our car rental exchange! So, we've been staying in backpackers' places, which have mostly been big homes that ... read more

Hey y'all Greetings from the Feej! Actually, we're no longer in the Feej, we're now in New Zealand, on the North Island. But more about that in a bit. Back to Fiji -- In two words, Fiji was Awe Some. Sunny and toasty warm everyday, we went through an entire bottle of SPF 30 sunscreen in less than a week, and still got a few minor burns. We tried to update the blog a couple times, but the connections were less than fantastic you might say, due to ultra slow connections, and also because of the recent hurricane which knocked out a lot of communications. Speaking of hurricanes, Mick was a real rolling stone. He came through NW Fiji (where we spent the whole week) the week before we arrived. It didn't do a lot of ... read more

Good morning! We arrived yesterday in LA and found our way to Santa Monica. The weather is warm and sunny! A great stepping stone into the heat of Fiji. We leave tonight on a 12 hr flight and will wake up submerged deep within the islands of the South Pacific! We should point out to you that you may be seeing a lot of pictures of a previously 'stuffed' animal Mr. Blue Frog. This is a special mascot for Nancy's grade 5/6 class. He will be traveling with us and will be sending numerous reports and postcards to her students. ... read more
