Nyuma Munlthali, 51, has eight children in a village called Khwalala in Malawi's northern region. As a young girl, she had to work to pay for her own education. She then married and had a kid at 16 and had seven more children after that. In order to support her family, she grows cassava and rice. In previous years, that farming fed her family and provided income, but now with unpredictable weather, farming is not as reliable as before. Nyuma is trying to get by, but heavy rains have taken a toll on the village and the government seems to turn a blind eye.
