Enjoyed your information Your comments really encourage me. My daughter and I are going to Somoto on a mission trip July 27. It looks beautiful! We'll be staying in the same hotel you did. Is there any malaria down there? Were both mosquito magnets.

In my mind sound Corn Island is butifull place.
Corn Island visit? Hola Terry and Kathy
Thanks for the travel blog that entises us to go to the Corn Islands for a visit. We live in Redwood City, CA and have mountain property in Panama that we travel back and forth to see now and then. The Carib side sounds nice and a different country would be interesting. Where there other hotels you would recommend on the Corns? Gracias
that's awesome! i'm ashamed to call myself a nicaraguan and not know about this beautiful canyon! i recently found out about it. i married an american and him and i along with a friend plan to explore it in november!
Can't wait to go to SOMOTO! Hi -
Thanks for the great description! I am going to be volutneering in Somoto for 7 months, and I am very excited to call this place home.
hola mi nombre es alex betanco estudio ingenieria agricola, el dia lunes 10 de abril, voy para el bellisimo cañon de somoto en compañia de unos amigos, que quieen conocer el hermoso lugar estamos muy emocionados
A Lady from Somoto It's nice to see someone who appreciates my homeland as much as I do. I'm glad you had a nice time there. I know I do when I visit. I hope you return, ready to enjoy Nicaragua all over again. Sincerely, Delia.
To the happy travelers. I've been reading you blogs. Sounds great down there!! Hope you have a safe trip home. Let me know when you get back. Bye for now.
correction on dances The photo identified as Dancers at the Jueves Verbena in Masaya are from the Masaya area, NOT the Atlantic Coast. This particular costuming is called La India Lujosa, and has the same steps as other dances accompanied by the marimba de arco, which is unique to this part of Nicaragua. The music is exactly the same as that for other dances -- NO Creole influence at all.
What guide book are you referring to, by the way?
Daddy Yankee, if that really was him, which would've been verrrry expensive to bring into the country, is from New York of Puerto Rican heritage, and currently the biggest star of reggaeton, essentially rap in Spanish.
I am so very glad to hear you all are having such a positive experience. Please keep spreading the word! the Nicaraguan economy was essentially destroyed by our (US) govt. throughout the 1980s and unfortunately our govt. reneged on promises to rebuild it once the Sandinistas lost the 1990 elections. They can use the dollars!
Thanks for the great photos.
See you soon Hi kathy and Terry, Can't wait to see you two in person. If your back in Paonia on Saint Paddy's Day come to Pizza My Heart for beer and pizza. Not as good as fresh shrimp and lobster, but not too bad for the middle of the Colorado Rockies. Howard will be playing Friday as well.
Love, Betty
you are missing cold and snow Hopefully by the time you get back to Paonia, the snow will be gone.. It has been a real mess. It sounds like you guys have had a wonderful time while we've beeen freezing. It will be good to see you both when you make it home.
Love,
Zach and family
Hi from Paonia again Hi Kathy and Terry, you two need to come home soon sounds like Terry is having way too much fun scuba diving in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Kathy glad to hear your feeling better and drinking milk, besides don't you know that drinking milk does a body good. The weather was super, but were back to winter with snow and cold temperatures. very typical for Colorado. Oh well at least I can go skiing a few more times. Can't wait to see you two. Love, Betty
Welcome Home! Hi Cathy! Your stories have been so great to read in the dreary and cold winter months. Although I was able to get away for a liitle bit, I was thrilled to live vicariously through your e-mails. Glad you are feeling better and I can't wait to hear more details in voice. Travel safe, Hattie
Hi Kathy and Terry. I hadn't read any of your previous travel blogs because I didn't know who nica bound was. However this morn it said from Kathy Briggs so I checked it out. I went back and read a lot of your journal and I'm glad I did.
Sounds like you are haveing a great trip except for the measles. What a bummer. I wish I could sneak a trip in somewhere. We've been in rehearsals for the Vagina Monologues so haven't really been able to get away except for short day trips. I'm looking forward to your return to hear more about your trip. Feel better soon and see ya soon, Barb
yikes, the measles!!!!!! Hi Kathy and Terry,
Glad you are feeling better. What a bummer... but I am glad you are recovering. Great picture of Terry and the diving. I am sure you have lots of stories to tell. We are finally having a break from the winter, funny, now we are all saying we need more snow for the spring breakers. We are all saying prayers for John and karen for next week. He goes back to Duke on the 14th for an MRI. Enjoy the last few days of your winter getaway and get well quickly!
love,
alice
Hi from Paonia Hi Kathy Terry, Hope your feeling better, such a pain to be sick on vacation. Don and I are doing fine, our Super Bowl Party was a big success, had about 50 people here. Don has the fireplace completely finished, miracle of miracles, looks utterly awesome too. Although we have had lots of snow in the mountains, but not too much in Paonia, lately the weather has been in the 60's so the snow is melting fast. I'm kinda of ready for Spring anyway. Only thing I know about town politics is ther are four seats up for town trustees and election day is on April 4th, if I learn more I will let you Know. Went to a marvelous concert at the Paradise last night the place was packed standing room only. The band called the Wilders all accustic blue grass from Portland Oregon rocked the house, Terry you and Kathy would have loved it. Donna and Zach have opened a new novelty store on Grand Avenue called "The Original Henweigh's Emporium." The store is full of gag gifts , and political humor of course, and a section in the back for adults only. Oh and Kathy there is a Hi-Tea at the Bross Hotel on Sat. March 11th, all the girls are going, we are dressing up, and of course Linda Bistro will provide us with clothing, hats, and gloves. If your home in time, please come. Miss you two, still going to Yoga, See you soon. Love, Betty
Back in Paonia Hola y'all! Back home after a month in Oaxaca by myself. Sure are a lotta white folks around here... Stayed in budget Mexican hotels and kept a good ol fashioned hand written travel journal. You can read it when you're home. My Spanish is quite fluent after 4 Coronas!!Sure looks lush and green in Nica..Oaxaca is dry dead jungle and cactus. I'm cooking dinner tonight..hurray. Missed my own cooking something fierce! I never want to see frickin Mole Negro again!!! Love ya, Little
Always good to hear from you! Keep those postings coming - you have such a nice way with words. We really enjoy hearing about your adventures. Hope you're feeling better soon and that Mr. T. doesn't suffer the same malady. We're all fine down here in Phoenix - but with 132 straight days with no rail we understand dust!
Via con Dios, mi hermana y cuñado
fish story!!!!! I can tell by the info about the fish that it is still a sore point. You can tell the story over again at Beth's wedding and enjoy a good laugh!!
Stay healthy and enjoy the rest of your journey!!!
