Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948For our second full day in Dubrovnik, we had the option of a full-day excursion into the neighboring country of Montenegro. We have a good friend here (well, they actually moved to Colorado a few months ago, but still...) who is from Montenegro, and we thought it would be a unique opportunity to see the country. She also raved about the beauty and said we had to go. The vast majority of our group did also opt for the tour, though a few remained behind for another day of sightseeing in Dubrovnik,When we awoke, the sky had a weird pale to it, and we had heard the winds pick up during the night. As soon as we walked outside to board the bus, we could tell that it was 20-30 degrees warmer than the ... read more

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948K and I had visited Dubrovnik for a long weekend way back in 2003, while we were living in Vienna. K's cousin Allison and Ann came to visit, with their daughter Abby, who is a few months younger than Anna. They stayed with Anna while we took a weekend trip, and then we watched Abby, while they went to Salzburg. Certain parts of that trip remained in our memories, but it was not until we returned to Dubrovnik, that K and I realized how much we had forgotten. This morning we were to have our formal whisper-enabled tour of Dubrovnik, and then the remainder of the day was at our discretion. The weather was much like the previous day, with cloudy skies and a brisk wind, but it was in the high 50's/low 60's. We'd ... read more

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948We all slept well, though we did have an early wake-up this morning. After checking out, we were to have our formal tour of the city of Split this morning. As we were finishing breakfast in the hotel, a long and steady stream of incredibly beautiful young women started to stream into the restaurant. We were walking out at the time, and the sheer cacophony of their collective perfume was overwhelming. What we joked was a Playboy convention turned out to be the Miss Croatia beauty contest which, unbeknownst to us, was taking place at our hotel.Though we had our own guilde with us the entire week -- Rok -- in each of the cities we visited, we had local guides show us around. Our guide in Split was particularly good and incredibly funny. ... read more

Geo: 43.5127, 16.4424This was the first morning of the trip on which we had to follow a tour schedule; wake-up call at 6:00am, bags outside your room at 7:00am, and depart at 8:00am. We were all still adjusting to the new time, so it was no hardship to be ready on time.We were beginning our tour along the Adriatic coast this morning, leaving the Istrian peninsula, driving south, then up and over the mountains to ultimately reach the city of Split. Our bus hugged the narrow coastal road as we snaked down approximately 140 miles to the small town of Zadar. We'd now formally entered the Dalmatian area of Croatia, and Zadar is known as the historical center of the region. The compact historic area of the city was once on an island, separated from the ... read more

Geo: 45.3392, 14.3063Something I have enjoyed about our tours with Gate1 is that they build in time to be flexible, and there are usually several optional tours for which you can sign up, or you can go and do something on your own. The first full day of tour was, in fact, optional, and involved visits to several towns on the Istrian Peninsula, of which Opatija is part. As nearly everyone had just arrived from the States, some elected to stay behind and rest, while others went off on their own -- some went to the lake region up in Slovenia, while another couple went scuba diving. We -- along with more than half of our group -- joined the tour, and we very glad we did. Our first stop was in the town of Pula, ... read more

Geo: 45.3392, 14.3063Border controls were in place when we crossed into Croatia, though scrutiny was low. Both Slovenia and Croatia are members of the European Union, but only Slovenia is part of the Euro Zone and a member of the Schengen border control regime. This necessitated the formal border crossing, and when we crossed back into Slovenia a week later -- at different entry point -- we would see the results of the Syrian migrant crisis up close.By the time we descended down into the city of Opatija, we each had dozed for a bit. The air along the coast was much warmer than in the mountains, and with this inversion, the air was markedly hazy. It took away from some of the views as we got closer to the Adriatic, but it was still beautiful. It ... read more

Geo: 46.0546, 14.5044As I mentioned earlier, our gateway to the Adriatic was to be the city of Ljubljana -- the capital of Slovenia and a city, the spelling of which still confounds me to this day. Our flight departed from the old terminal in Vienna, which I knew all too well. The day started and ended with crystal-clear skies, which made for fantastic views of the Julian Alps during our very short 30-minute flight from Vienna. The airport is tiny, and beautifully situated in the foothills. We had a pre-arranged transfer, and our driver was waiting for us, after we retrieved our bags from the airport's one-and-only luggage carousel. It was a two-hour drive down to Opatija, on the coast, but that was less than half the time it would have taken to drive from Venice, and ... read more

Geo: 48.22, 16.37No sooner had I written "some things never change" that I remembered that upon our arrival in Vienna, it immediately struck us that we didn't recognize the airport. I flew out of there so often during our tour, I was especially shocked at how different it all looked. Turns out a new terminal was added, along with a new underground train station, linking the airport to the city. Well, suffice it to say, AFTER we left the airport, nothing ELSE had changed in Vienna since we left in 2003.We elected to stay at the hotel located immediately adjacent to the airport, as it would make things easier for our departure the following morning. We retrieved our bags and walked the short distance across the street to the hotel. It was only 9:00am or so ... read more

Geo: 39.0095, -77.4647The particular tour we booked was nine nights, and was to commence in the city of Opatija, on the coast of Croatia. Had we booked flights through the tour company, we would have commenced at the airport in Venice, Italy, from where they transported people by bus over to Opatija. This didn't seem the most convenient routing, and as we were using award miles to book our tickets, I got out a map of the area and looked at other options, in terms of airports more convenient for Opatija. The best option turned out to be Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. The best flight routing to get there involved a change of planes in Vienna. Upon seeing that, we decided to break up our trip and spend a day in Vienna before continuing on ... read more

Geo: 38.9821, -77.5386Our Spring Break trip this year was earlier than usual, thanks to the date upon which Easter fell and the Loudoun County Public Schools calendar. Coming in mid-March, the date literally snuck up on us. We had debated several options for a trip this year, and originally had booked a Mediterranean cruise. In the midst of my trying to arrange very complicated flights to accommodate that cruise, I stumbled upon a tour to Croatia and Slovenia, which happened to be with the same company we used for our Ecuador trip last year -- Gate1. We'd had success on that trip, and the itinerary for this one looked really good, so following a family meeting we elected to head for the Adriatic.... read more
