Geo: 38.8921, -77.0241Our Asian "life experience" was fantastic. I had to write it down so I would not forget it! I always feel grateful for the experience of travel and this was no exception. We brought in the new year with a bang! We left on Wednesday morning before Christmas and arrived in Bangkok on Thursday night. As anyone who knows me well, don't ask me about time changes -- I only know it was twelve hours! And yes, it is really, really far to fly!!! We flew non-stop from Dulles to Tokyo, and Allen was able to upgrade us to business class as an early Christmas present. That was a 14-hour leg, so it was nice for Anna and I to get a little sleep.... read more

Geo: 38.9821, -77.5386We were all a little subdued during the ride home. I know Anna was none-too-happy to be coming home, essentially, to begin school. That disappointment was compounded by the fact that Chip would not be home when we got there. She had been looking at pictures of him throughout our trip and was really missing him.Things were in order in the house, and my jerry-rigged timed sprinkler had worked in our absence and managed to keep my tomato plants alive while we were gone. It was obvious it hadn't rained, and the grass showed it, but by-God we've got tomatoes! It was still early enough to unpack and even begin laundry, but we were all in bed by 8:00pm, as all three of us were working the next day...well, Anna didn't have to work until ... read more

Geo: 39.0095, -77.4647We were on time and, once again, were very thankful to have our Global Entry memberships, as the lines for immigration were the longest I have ever seen. We arrived right at 3:00pm, in the midst of all the international arrivals from Europe. We were through in a breeze and, as usual, had to wait for the bags. The Customs line was just as bad, but again we were able to bypass it, and in under 30 minutes after landing we were in a cab on our way home.... read more

Geo: 55.6763, 12.5681We all slept long and hard following our marathon day prior, and as our flight didn't leave until 12:20pm, we even slept in a little. We all were ready for some proper food after our meager attempt at dinner the night before. Luckily the hotel's breakfast buffet was outstanding. One of the best hotel buffet's I've ever had, and we took full advantage. We took the hotel's shuttle to the airport, which was a short five-minute drive. Even though we were able to check-in in the Business Class line, it took longer than expected. There was a huge crowd of Chinese men, each with three or four giant suitcases, attempting to check-in ahead of us. We could not figure out what in the world they would be ferrying back to Beijing, but it must ... read more

Geo: 55.6763, 12.5681Our arrival and disembarkation in Copenhagen was the mirror image of the previous morning in Kiel, but in this scenario, we were the ones trying to disembark for good. We were told to be in one of the lounges by 8:30am, which was the same time we were to dock. When we got there, we for the first time realized how few people had embarked from Copenhagen. There were maybe 20 of us in the room, which included ourselves and the seven folks with whom we'd shared the tours in Stockholm, Tallinn, and St. Petersburg. A few minutes after getting there, we were escorted off the ship. No fuss, no muss. Our bags were waiting for us just inside the terminal, and we then headed outside for a taxi. Ah, here was the rub. ... read more

Geo: 54.3227, 10.1359As I noted earlier, the bulk of passengers on our sailing had embarked from Kiel, so when we docked early on Saturday morning, the ship was abuzz with about 2,000 people looking to disembark and head home. We, however, were among a much smaller number trying to get off for the day. To the cruise line's credit, we were able to get off immediately, bypassing the lounges full of people trying to leave. We had to clear German immigration, as our last port of call had been Russia, and we had to queue in the sole two lanes reserved for "other passports." Most of the people in line around us were Russian or Lebanese, and they were talking a very long time to clear. We waited our turn, and when we got up there ... read more

Geo: 58.2099, 20.8573We were all literally exhausted from the previous few days, in particular the very-full day in St. Petersburg, this second day-at-sea came at exactly the right now. We all slept in and enjoyed a room-service breakfast. While we elected to not return to the overpriced spa, Anna and I did play in the "Olympics Trivia," which we lost by one answer. Sigh. We also sat in the game room and played a lot of cards. All three of us also finished our respective books on this day, which was incredibly relaxing. We also elected to eat in the "specialty restaurant" this night, which was in the ship's sushi restaurant. The food was quite good and service was outstanding. With only a couple tables occupied, and with a view to the sushi chefs, it was ... read more

Europe » Russia August 18th 2016

Geo: 59.939, 30.3158As with Tallinn, our return to St. Petersburg (Leningrad, when we first visited) was under far better conditions. We awoke to find ourselves already pulled up to the very large cruise terminal complex. The skies were gray but it was not raining, and the forecast rain held off all day. The cruise area was huge, with berths for at least 10 ships visible from our single mooring. There were, however, only three ships in port this day, including our own. Many other sailings that include St. Petersburg include two days in port, allowing far more time to see the city. We, alas, only had one day -- though we were in port from 7:00am to 6:30pm. Peculiarities with my work prevented me from staying in Russia for more than one day, so we had ... read more

Geo: 59.4392, 24.7586With the red skies of the previous day's sunset, I'd assumed "red skies at night, sailors' delight" would hold true, and we'd have nice weather this morning. Instead, we opened our curtains to heavy fog and a steady rain as we slowly approached the port of Tallinn in Estonia. K and I had been to Tallinn back in 1987, a whopping 29 years ago. Sigh. We were there, however, by accident. As part of our visit to the Soviet Union as part of a class back at American, we were flying from Tbilisi, Georgia to Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in January 1987. Our Aeroflot plane was diverted to Tallinn, however, by ice fog in Leningrad. It was a very surreal experience, as our tour director shared very little information with us. I recall they ... read more

Geo: 59.3327, 18.0645We had visited Goeteborg, Sweden as part of our Norway cruise and really enjoyed it. Anna still cites it as one of her top-two stops on that trip. We were excited that this cruise would be stopping in Stockholm, as it promised to only be "bigger and better." I have a friend who is posted to Stockholm, and she had offered to take the day off and show us around the city. We ended up having to pass on her offer as she ended up not being able to take the day off, but that worked out fine. We had hoped we might meet up at the pier before we departed port, but that too was thwarted by time.We ended up booking a full day tour through a private company (the same company we ... read more
