Yes, by all means, take advantage of the free tango lessons. Tango has made a comeback in the last couple of decades and now is popular among young people of different social classes. Immortalized most famously by singer/composer Carlos Gardel, it is undoubtedly Argentina's musical contribution to the world. Theater is also a must, the most famous venue is Teatro Colon. Also, try to catch a soccer game, even better a "clasico" match between the two traditional rivals, Boca Juniors and River Plate. Enjoy your Buenos Aires experience!
Love you! Nej! I love you and so happy that you're enjoying your travels. Please send my love to the family. I can't wait to see you in April. Big hug...xoxo
Besides being your birth place, Santa Cruz is the city where most of our extended family members in Bolivia live. Make the most of this great opportunity to enjoy some down time in a beautiful, relaxed setting. You're quite right in commenting that often we're so busy in our daily lives (specially in the U.S.) that we're at a loss when it comes to enjoying some quiet moments. We have to learn to enjoy life rather than constantly spinning around the wheel like a hamster!!
indigenous justice i am going to write in 3 languages:
SPANISH: MUCHAS GRACIAS POR EL COMENTARIO, Y ES NECESARIO HACER ESTUDIO MAS PROFUNDOS AL RESPECTO, TODA VES QUE EN UNA COMUNIDAD COMO ES EL BOLIVIA SE PUEDE APRENDER MUCHO. INCLUSO SIN EXAJERAR PUEDE SER EN UN FUTURO UNA ALTERNATIVA DE UN NUEVO MODELO DE ESTADO QUE SOLUCIONE LOS PROBLEMAS EN EL PLANETA.
AYMARA (NATIVE LANGUAGE IN BOLIVIA); AKA LUP'IWIMP JIWISAÑAK SUMPACHA UTACHAÑANI AKA SUMA QAMAÑ THAKITAKI. MA PIT ARUSKIPTASIPXAÑANAKASAKIPUNIRAKISPAWA.
ENGLISH: IT IS VERY INTERESTING TO ANALYSE INDIGENOUS JUSTICE IN BOLIVIA, DUE TO THE STRUGGLE AMONG DIFFERENT KIND TO SISTEMS. WE HAVE TO REMEBER THAT ANCIENT PEOPLE FROM HERE (BOLIVIA) THOUGHT THAT MAIN PURPOSE IS TO FIND HARMONY AND PEACE. AND IT IS POSIBLE, NOT IMPOSIBLE. THANKS NEJLA CALVO.
I HOPE I AM GOING TO SEE AGAIN AT THE FUTURE.
You are indeed very fortunate in that you were able to attend and participate in the indigenous meeting in Choquecota, Oruro, as well as partake in the celebrations of the Aymara New Year. As you pointed out, it is a rare privilege for an outsider and requires an express special invitation from the indigenous authorities. This is something that money simply can't buy and I'm sure you'll consider it one of the highlights of your life when you look back!
Yes, there is definitely a grain of truth in so far as the absence of an effective, equitable formal judicial system in Bolivia (particularly for the poor and underprivileged) leaves a vacuum which is filled by taking justice in to their own hands.
Incredible journey Nejla,
Thank you for taking the time to 'blog' and I will make every effort to sign on to read them. Great success on your endeavor and as always raise that beautiful voice to the sky and belt out a tune for your new neighbors. Miss you and safe travels- hope the next papaya you have is friendlier to you. God Bless, Pat
To Dad Dad, the cousin i'm referring to is Javier Calvo. Sen. Surco is a business client of his through San Pedro. Also, Maria Angelica is arranging meetings for me with her contacts for next week (specifically highly-regarded lawyers and members of los Ponchos Rojos), whom she knows through her work as a respected professional journalist and writer. I've yet to contact German Guaygua because I have not fully developed my script (which will serve to introduce myself and help to guide me through conducting interviews in Spanish). Nonetheless, I am off to a speedy start. I doubt that three months will be enough time to investigate as thoroughly as I would like to.
This is great! As you point out, the "Ponchos Rojos" are a militant, indigenous group based in Achacachi (Provincia Omasuyos, Departamento de La Paz). Attendance to the indigenous council meeting and to the indigenous wedding of Sen. Fidel Surco will provide you an invaluable "insider's" insight, something that would be impossible to gage as a mere Internet researcher from the outside. You are very privileged to have this opportunity, make the most of it and take lots of pics! Who is the cousin you refer to in your blog?
Adelante exploradora!
I loved your post about justice in Bolivia, etc. It was so interesting! I learned a lot about the Quechua Indians while in Peru, but it must fascinating to be living i the middle of it all! My blog is looking for travel photos, reviews, even social commentary, like what you wrote, to share. If you have the time, check it out at dirty-hippies.blogspot.com, or email me at dirtyhippiesblog@gmail.com. I look forward to reading more!
