Crazy Dutchy

Have done quite a bit of traveling over the last few years. On May 25th 2009 I'll be going to South-East Asia for 6 months and I'll be writing my adventures here. Hopefully I'll meet some wonderful people and have a great time!

Before I start writing my blog: Uploading photos seems to be very difficult here in Asia so if you would like to see them I recommend going to my Facebook page! After staying 1 night in Bangkok after returning from Cambodia I headed with Katie to Burma by plane. The moment I got off the plane I knew I would love this country. The moment we walked out of the airport terminal I saw the oldest cars completely stripped. Katie said it reminded her of Cuba. The people I noticed were different from any other coiuntry I had been to in SEA. They were very friendly and the didn't hassle us as much as they do in other countries AND I didn't see many other tourists which was a very nice change. Due to the government ... read more

After an easy border crossing I arrived in the capitol of Cambodia: Phnom Penh. People warned me it was a horrible place and get out of there straight away after I had visited the most important sights. When I got there I wasn't looking too impressed.. it was dusty, busy and 20 tuk tuk drivers standing around me wanting to give me a lift to my guesthouse. I ended up going to the backpackers area and when I got there I noticed that the people were friendly and everyone was very chilled out (i do believe that the weed helped) and also a lot of Cambodian people spoke good English! With some people I met on the bus we decided to go for a walk around the city. The temples they have here are beautiful and ... read more

After Hue I got a bus to the lovely city of Hoi An. Hoi An is famous for tailor made clothing and the tailor shops were everywhere! I think I was one of the few people who didn't get anything made (I am on a budget!) It was a nice place to walk around in and it had a very nic ebeach. When I arrived though everything was full! Eventually I found some places that had rooms left but the prices were ridiculous. And then there was a hotel who felt sorry for me and they said they had a $5 room in the attic of their hotel. I was very desperate at that point and decided to take it. When I walked in there was a bed that barely fit in the room and a ... read more

HANOI AND HUE I left Laos and for some crazy reason I decided to take a 33 hour bus ride to Hanoi, Vietnam. My God.. that was a long trip! It took me 2 hours to cross the Laos/Vietnam boarder! Everyone was pushing and shoving trying to get there passport stamped, but apparently they hadn't met me yet ;-) Buses were searched for drugs and a girl on the other bus had her phone stolen while waiting to get her passport stamped. So not a great first impression of Vietnam. Finally we all got to Hanoi and this minibus we got on to get to the backpackers area tried to promote his hotel. He got a bit grumpy when we said we already had reservations somewhere else we got kicked out and had to walk a ... read more

To get from Thailand to Laos I decided to take the slowboat over the Mekong River. First I had to sit in a minibus for 5,5 hours and spend the night at the boarder. The next morning we had to do a 30 second boat trip to the other side of a small river and there I entered Laos. Luckily there wasn't too much hassle here and we got taken to our 'slow boat' which would take me to Luang Prabang. Once I got to the boat I didn't realize until then how many people they wanted to put on the boat... we were like sardines in a tin! Luckily my friends and I actually managed to get comfortable seats while others had to sit on hard benches or on the floor! The trip took us ... read more

KANCHANABURI After leaving the islands I got a ferry + bus up to Bangkok. I didn't really know what to do from there but when I arrived in BKK at 3.30 am I decided to get a bus to Kanchanaburi. On the bus I met an Israeli girl Olga and American girl named Kate. Kanchanaburi is famous for the bridge over the River Kwai and the nearby Erawan waterfalls. The 3 of us got a room together at a guesthouse and rented some bikes to explore the village. We went to a museum which was about the bridge being built during WW II and it was quite interesting. Later we cycled to the bridge and walked on it. (For photos see my previous post) I was a very quiet town but very nice. We discovered that ... read more

Bangkok On the 26th of May I arrived in Bangkok. Once I had gotten of the plane and made it through immigration without too much hassle I walked outside the terminal and just couldn't believe the incredible heat! Definitely not what I'm used too. Managed to get a taxi and luckily with air conditioning. Once you get into the centre of Bangkok people drive like idiots.. I would not want to cross a road there! I had already pre booked a hotel for my first 3 nights in Bangkok because I really couldn't handle walking around with a big rucksack looking for a place to stay. I stayed in a street called Soi Rambuttri which is a 1 minute walk from the famous Kho San Road. I met Vicky for a drink and talked about what ... read more

The last few weeks I've been trying to get everything ready for my SEA trip for 6 months. There's actually a lot to think about.. passport, visa, vaccinations, medication etc. Getting a new passport was more difficult then I thought. Because I'm not registered in Holland anymore I had to go all the way to The Hague (1h20m away) to apply for a new passport. I wasn't too pleased about this, but there wasn't much I could do about it. So I went down there with a passport photo and my old passport (this should normally be sufficient) but no... Where is the proof that I'd been living abroad for the past 3,5 years? Well, seeing that I had nothing with me (payslips, work permits etc. were in a box in Switzerland) they had to do ... read more
