If you’ve ever been to New York City (NYC) before, you’ll know what a real buzz it is. On the other hand if you haven’t ever been, it’s a must do one day. There’s simply no other place like it on earth! New York is all go 24/7. I was lucky enough to have already been there a couple of years ago so I knew what I was in for this time. In fact I’ve even met people on my travels so far who have been there up to five times already! It really is a city that never sleeps. If you can for a moment, imagine an island that’s about 60 square kilometres in size has some of the tallest buildings in the world on it, about 2 million people that live there and as ... read more

Hi guys, I'm back again for another quick update. After leaving the Skordas's per my last blog I went on to spend a few extra days in downtown San Francisco. It's always been one of those places you hear about from other people (with never a bad comment either I might add) so I thought it was worth a look around. Unfortunately though, I didn't find a flower for my hair though... maybe next time hey!! Luckily I also had a good friend in town called "Terri" (that I met months ago back in Thailand) which was great as she showed me around and basically gave me a personal tour of the city for a few days. It really does make such a difference when you know someone who lives there.. you see a whole other ... read more

I’d like to introduce you all to some very good friends of mine from sunny California who I recently spent 4 fantastic days with, the Skordas Family. I was lucky enough to be Robert and Paula’s very first “Lions Youth Exchange Student” way back in 1996 and after 13 long years I thought it was well and truly time for another visit and a quick reunion. 13 years ago Rob and Paula spoiled my rotten for about a month back in a place called Grand Coulee over the Christmas of 1996 when I was just 17 years old and we had a ball together. In fact, since then I believe they have had 7 more exchange students since so you can get a feel for how much they like it and the kind of people they ... read more

WOW, I’m not sure what words can do these too justice, so I’m simply going to leave it at that for now and say ‘wow’. They were both great but I think I liked (or should I say appreciated) the Great Wall more. I didn’t realise it until I was told on the tour (pardon my ignorance) but it was built over three different Chinese dynasty’s (literally one top of each other) and was designed to keep the Mongolians out as they were nomadic in nature and feared by the Chinese. And for those of you who don’t know this thing stretches about 8000 km’s long too across the top of China and averages about 15ft tall in most places. Now that’s a big wall and a lot of work to build it! Having walked up ... read more

Having just left the completely westernised Hong Kong after a fun week there with all its glitz, glamour and exciting nightlife I headed over to Beijing, China’s capital for a quick stopover (8 days in fact) on my way across to the USA. And I must say, it’s a big ‘thumbs’ up for Beijing, on all counts. Oh and whilst I think of it, if you ever go to HK you’ve simply got to go and party at an area in town called “LKF”, it’s got to be some of the best night life in the world. I managed three nights there in a row and had a ball, but damn it’s expensive so save up your pennies. Now Beijing is a very interesting city that’s gone through some major changes over the last few years ... read more

This is just a quick blog today as I’m a little behind and trying to catch you all up! Hanoi is the last place I visited before leaving Vietnam a couple of weeks ago. I took me a few days to figure it out but once you get your bearings it was nice. There’s not a whole lot to do within the immediate vicinity but it’s still definitely worth a couple of days on any visit to Vietnam. Like any major city in South East Asia it has the usual one million motor bikes racing around and everything you can think of is done right there and then on the streets. The locals eat, live and work in the same ‘house/shop’ if they are lucky enough to have one and one way or another they all ... read more

Now I know you’re all going to be sick of hearing this from me by now, but the places I am visiting are honestly getting better and better as I go along. Just when you think you’ve seen the best of a country, something else even better pops up out of know where… its crazy!! …. And Ha Long Bay in Vietnam is no exception to this rule. It is truly a magic place that everyone must visit at some point. In fact a great 2 week trip to Vietnam for anyone who is interested would simply be to fly into Hanoi, go do a Ha Long Bay trip, head down to Hoi An and then onto Phu Quoc Island for some R’n’R. Anyway I was lucky enough to find a great 3 day ( 2 ... read more

Hoi-An really is a beautiful little city and well worth the visit one day. For me it was actually the best little town I have stayed in to date on my travels so far. I was there for about a week but I could easily have stayed longer if I had the time. Hoi-An was built in the 17th century, originally as an international trading port and it has very strong influences from the Chinese, Japanese and Europeans. Walking down the little narrow streets at night its not hard to imagine you’re in some little Italian village with all its cafes, restaurants and one million and one tailor shops (and I'm not joking by the way there everywhere!). Set on a river not far from the ocean, Hoi An is also surround on all four sides ... read more

Well, good morning southern Vietnam at least for the moment anyway. After Siem Reap I headed directly over to Vietnam and into Ho Chi Mien City (that’s HCMC for us locals ) or Saigon for all you older folk out there. It’s interesting you know, when your there the only people who seem to refer to it as HCMC is government officials and airports.. to everyone else its still seems to be known as good old Saigon. Now Saigon is a really interesting city and big contrast from Cambodia.. for a start you have about 4 million motorbikes in a city with about 8 million people in it.. spend five minutes down at any main intersection and you’ll see about half of them racing past. In fact I highly recommend a five minute ride on the ... read more
