travelling
Nate , that's what I did exactly in 1998 when I backpacked the Continent with 2 other female friends. Arrive by train , take a flyer from people advertising their digs and take potluck! In Italy once we did that and the digs were !!!!! so the next day we split and walked the streets to find better sleeping quarters. We decided which was best and moved over there. That was a magic trip noting organised just arrive in a town and find something to our liking. You know us by now - nothing planned just go!! Never forget the "Flying Pig" backpackers in Amsterdam - very interesting

San Sebastian and other things
You have touched on a topic that I love. What I call impromptu travel. Sudden idea? Place to visit? Just go.Just do it. What is the first thing society tells you? Plan it? Have you ever seen a child plan anything? Thats why they have such fun. By the time parents and society have finished with the young mind we are all prisoners of the welfare state and welfare thinking. Its when you stop being a child, you stop dreaming. When you stop dreaming, the fairies and goblins disappear and the magic of not knowing is gone. The human is built to discover. If I was to ask you when have you been happiest? What would you say? When you were looking forward to what you thought was magic--- a dream. In your school days, the holidays? And often when the holidays arrived the dream bubble burst because the magic of 'dreaming' had gone and you faced reality which usually was not the mahgic you dreamed about? You are following your dreams. Your fairies and Alice in Wonderland. Never let anyone take that away from you. My father never grew up. Until the day he died he loved young people and the madness of their wishes and hopes and aspirations. I chose the words for his epitaph on his headstone: "HE WHO NEVER LOST HIS CHILDS HEART!" Never lose your dreams. May you dream forever and never wake up. Anything is possible if you have the heart to follow that dream long enough. You may not want to be Walt Disney but you can make YOUR dreams come true. You DAD and your mate away from home. Proud to count you and Chas as friends. Alec.

Life's an Adventure
You take a large part of my spirit with you. I set out exactly 53 years ago to go north in Africa to work as a bulldozer operator at Kariba Dam which was then the biggest dam wall ever constructed. That was the start of my adventure in life. The catalyst that will propel you into the future is that you have taken the first step, the step that is the most difficult to take, that break with tradition which says that "rolling stones gather no moss". Standing stones also discover no new continents. So, whatever life may bring you learn to accept it as one of the steps in that adventure of life. Nothing ventured , nothing gained. Most people live their lives like showering in a raincoat. Society tries to bluff you that you should "get a job and settle down". If they had told that to Vasco de Gama and Captain Cook Australia might never have been discovered and you might not be searching for new frontiers. May your live in interesting times. My spirit travels with you. Alec.

Nirwanah
"really combine business, pleasure and travel all together long term": sounds like Nirwanah if you ask me. Do let me know when you find it, i'll join you! At least you started in the right country, I guess you'll be partying non-stop for the next 72 hours post world cup victory! Though on a more serious note: you may be able to find a lifestyle that suits you, but i suspect it'll be very personal/subjective and not transferable. So no Nathan, you won't be able to write an e-book and commercialise your newly acquired wisdom!

Hey Nathan. I came across your post by accident but I'm looking forward to reading where you end up. My boyfriend and I are about to depart on the same exact sort of adventure together, but we're heading to New Zealand (from Los Angeles), and hope to settle there. We have a community travel blog and we're always looking for travel reviews, commentaries, photos, etc, to share with our readers. If you have the time, check it out at dirty-hippies.blogspot.com, or email us at dirtyhippiesblog@gmail.com. Good luck with your venture! Heather :)

Sound of Music!!
So many thanks for this interesting website about your visit to Salzburg! Living in South Africa I am a big fan of TSOM movie since I saw it the first time here in 1967! I was so happy to be able to visit Salzburg in August 2007!! Since then I can't read enough about what other people experienced while being there and (even maybe on the same SOM tour - Panorama) shairing their photo's. Thank you for not letting me think I am the only one that loves that movie. Although Julie Andrews made a lot other movies this one is the best ever.

Atlast
I was in Holland way back in 1990s and managed to visit the box house but did not photo it. Now i try to explain it to my people but they can not conceptualise it. This was another attempt to get a glimpse of it. Thanks

FOOD!
Living in Japan at the moment in a small town and I cannot wait to go to Thailand. So excited about Pad Thai. Was the food super cheap in Thailand? It's always the one thing you can't budget for.
