Out n' About

I'm a singer and documenting my many travels now online. You never know who you'll meet and where, so this is my effort to keep in touch with the world while I go wherever it is that the music takes me!

OK, so let's talk about all the things I will miss from Spoleto: 1. The food - especially the Penne alla Norcina (penne pasta with cream sauce and wild boar crumbles) and Flan with dark caramel sauce from Ristorante del Mercato 2. The people - the Spoletini are incredibly nice and helpful. They know we don't speak much Italian but they're happy when we try our hardest to converse. 3. Umbriarvacationrentals.com - Laurie is hilarious; that dry British humor just doesn't get old. 4. The history - it's like walking in a really pretty history book when you're at the foot of La Rocca looking down at this ideal little village. 5. The colleagues - I've met some great people here and have gotten to network like never before. What I will not miss: 1. ... read more

I wasn't ignoring you, I've been busy! So let's start with last weekend because I don't remember if I told you; I have a feeling I did, but it's always nice to revisit good places. We went to check out Spoleto, new and old. First, we checked out Piazza Garibaldi where I found some great stores. FYI, the closer you get to the actual piazza, the cheaper the clothes get (in price). There are still some insanely beautiful clothes in boutiques, but most of the designers are available in America. Save your money! I found one "splurge" in a purse shop called Fergi. 16 euros got me a new, blue book bag. From there, we had a little espresso at the cafe with sand - it's the Beach Bar - and then we strolled to the ... read more

Yesterday was one of those days without a plan. We started kind of late (singers don't sleep) in the morning and walked down to Piazza Garibaldi for a little shopping. However, everything closes at 1 or 1:30pm for pausa. We ate a little pizza, had a good conversation and walked outside of the cafe to closed shops. So we did what anyone in our situation would do: we had gelato on a shaded outdoor cafe and decided what to do next. Our next decision was one that took us to the top of a hill and to a beautiful castle: The Rocca Albornoziana. From Wikipedia, here's a quick overview: The majestic Rocca Albornoziana, built in 1359-1370 by the architect Matteo Gattapone of Gubbio for Cardinal Albornoz. It has six sturdy towers which formed two distinct inner ... read more

It dawned on me this morning: I am in Italy! Not just a tourist, but a real student who is learning the Italian culture and appreciating it! So, here are a few words you should know when you visit Italy. *Watch the endings of words that end in vowels. Americans have a tendency to add some weird southern/Texas twang and it messes with the sound of Italy. In no particular order: 1. sciopero (sho-pe-ro) strike. A strike is a bad thing and happens often with city workers. It happens all the time and not just for raises. Sometimes there's no reason at all, but there is a sciopero. The people who run the train go on sciopero. That means the trains go to their final destination and then you're stuck. The moving walkways-like the ones at ... read more

Most of the time, I talk about the weather (hot and sticky) and the sites. I still have to go to the Castle and the monastery and really spend time at the museums but I'm waiting for la famiglia (the family) to get here. Instead, this blog entry is dedicated to the breakthroughs I'm having with the music staff. I like how I sound and so do you (you're all family - if you didn't we'd have problems) but there are always things to learn to make everything even better. If I can make small changes to make a better sound, I'll grow and growing keeps me from getting a real job. First, I keep a lot of tension in my jaw. You know how you chew bread that has a thick crust and your jaw ... read more

Well, this was our first weekend off since we got here last week. Last week was more just trying to get over jet lag. This week was more about fun! So, here's what I did. Friday night was the first concert of our festival season. The Ainos trio did a superb job with a Mozart and Mendelssohn program and finished with a beautiful Piazzola collection - two from the Seasons (autumn and spring, I believe) and Oblivion. That was incredible music! They played at the Sala Pegasus to an overflowing house of about 50-60 people. It's a very small church that was converted into a music space but the group was fabulous. After the concert, a group of us went out for dinner at one of the restaurants on Via Arco del Druso. This happens to ... read more

The weekend is here! Almost, sort of kinda. Last night we were going to eat at a sweet little restaurant called Otteria del Matto. Apparently, the food they serve is made by the mother of the owner who makes up whatever she wants and it's served along with a variety of salame, prosciutto, and cheeses. With a glass of wine and water, it's about 16 euro. These are called the platti di festival, or festival platters. However, the instrumentalists beat us to it and took up the whole restaurant! I sometimes forget that they need to eat, too. So, we instead did a little exploring and found another place that has "Quarto" in the name. There's a huge patio you can sit at, enough room for big groups. Between eleven of us, we had three bottles ... read more

OK, this place is hot in the summer. I'm not talking about hot with a nice summer breeze every few minutes. I'm talking about 80% humidity in the morning and about 60% humidity in the afternoon with an average right now of 92 degrees. Add in hills (not small hills, I mean steep, mountainous, paved terrain) and it makes a very unhappy singer! NM is hot but this is just downright crazy. It explains why all the ancient buildings are made of stone - moldy, but cool! That's the heat rant for the day. I think it is now a regular thing I can complain about. Now, back to the music. We had a master class today. That's when someone with a huge career or a huge career-maker lets you sing your aria and then rips ... read more

I think I'm slowly getting used to this weather. I mean like a snail kinda slow. It's hot and it's humid, and I expected that, considering I've been to Rome. However, I still am not used to not having a fan and it's hot and humid. I honestly don't know how people do it. Our Italian language teacher said that they do it to survive and be strong. That's great and all, but I'm a weak, lazy American. I like things within arm's reach and I like to be cool and ruin the planet. That's how we roll! OK, not all of us so don't be offended, but compared to other countries, we kind of are the wimpies. And we talk too much and too loud. Seriously too loud - you can hear us coming three ... read more

FYI - the town of Spoleto was supposed to be wi-fi city wide by now. But it's not. Your best bet is to either have internet in your hotel or get it at the Cafe Turisitici on Via del Druso. You have to buy something, but seriously? You were planning on buying a cappuccino anyway and smoking a cigarette on their patio. May as well connect while you're at it! Spoleto is a beautiful town. In July it is hot. Humid and hot. Today, though, the warming spell was broken by an hour long downpour of rain and hail. That was great because right now it is cool in the hotel (no A/C). It's our last day off and I enjoyed the solitude to myself in my room, mostly because the humidity was just too much ... read more
