I am an education student from Minnesota currently student teaching in the lovely city of Madrid.

My time in Madrid began on January 5th, and will end around March 19th. I am teaching/observing/etc during the better part of the weekdays, and on weekends am experiencing the cultural, artistic, historic and unique side of Madrid (and surrounding Toledo, Sevilla, and others)! It looks like I wont be taking any big trips except to Barcelona with my sister when she arrives the last week of my stay here.

Madrid Museums #2 and #3 of my trip! Although the Naval Museum is on one of the busiest strips in Madrid, you could walk past it without knowing you did. It is situated between the Prado museum and Plaza de Ciebles, so is quite easy to get to. The biggest hint for when you've found it is the ship sign hanging out in front of the door. The sign ads to the charm of the museum. Entrance is always free which is a plus! I wasn't sure what to expect once I got there, and I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. There were many rooms filled with artwork, weaponry, maps, trinkets, and everyday objects like a game case, mirrors, spoons and forks...All related to sea travel, exploration, and naval war. There were four ... read more

Last weekend Amanda and I took a day trip to Toledo. I was looking forward to this more because that meant we would take the high speed train, none of that 'stop every 15 mins' stuff like when we went to Segovia. Because Segovia was such a perfect day trip we decided to make Toledo one too, and planned on stepping off the train early afternoon. We arrived in Toledo around 1 o'clock and set off to explore the city. The city itself is only a 10 minutes walk outside of the city. We popped into a shop to get a map and were told just to turn the corner and keep walking. The mysterious town of Toledo appeared once we turned around the block. I say mysterious because it is a walled city, and you ... read more

Segovia P Just three weeks into my time here, and Amanda and I decide to take a day trip over to Segovia. I knew I wanted to go, the aqueduct intrigued me and I also wanted to see other parts of Spain, but I can't say that on the train ride there my stomach was full of butterflies of excitement. The two hour train ride did not excite me, and getting on the train with a full bladder was a bad mistake. The train did not have a restroom! As it bumped along, so went my patience. However, once we got to the train station and I ran to the loo, I was ready to explore. P Right outside the train station is a bus stop, but since the map does not include a "Ust. ... read more

Add another check to the list, I’ve taught my first and second class. My responsibilities were to cover about half the class period, so around 20 minutes, devoted to the KKK and some of the sources that were in the text. I planned to have the students go over about half of the sources in a think-pair-share activity, which actually worked well. Because so many of the students have Spanish as their first language I figured they would discuss in Spanish which is fine-I just made them accountable for their work by telling them beforehand I would call on each group. A few of the students led the discussion throughout the period and were really eager to answer and give their opinion, which was great but I just need to make sure they don’t dominate the ... read more

Buenas I am here in Madrid and will hit the one week mark this Saturday. Flying in was a pain, only because 8 hour plane rides are awful! I had a 4 hour layover in Amsterdam and ended up taking a short nap on the floor at my gate because there were no benches nearby. My flight to Madrid was short (I actually fell asleep) and I did not have any delays. Once I stepped out of the airport a taxi whisked me away to Hostal Aguilar where the other student teacher Amanda was staying. I was SO tired that I ended up going to bed right after I got in, around 9:30 or so. Although I had a full nights rest I woke up feeling like I hadn't slept a wink . Amanda and ... read more

As I child I never moved to another city or house even, so moving away to college and back home again has been a tough experience! My freshman year I drove up with my mom, sister, and boyfriend at the time. I over packed, and my freshman dorm room was bursting at the seams. I did have some pretty cool stuff though, even if I had no place to put it. That spring my sister came to help me move out, and I think I got it done in just one trip back to the cities. Sophomore year I drove up alone in my Chevy S10 and moved to the on-campus apartments. This time I brought less “dormy” stuff and more apartment stuff, but it was still a lot of stuff. That spring I found an ... read more

Hello there! So, I'm Kate, a senior in college finishing up with the secondary education program. I have spent most of this fall semester at a high school near my university, and these past two weeks have been teaching two courses (11th grade World History, and 8th grade Civics) full time. In general I have been having a blast this semester. Although there is still a month of classes left, I feel like I have made such strides in all the strategies I have learned, all the mistakes I have made and learned from (I have a couple doozies that I'll share later) and also just the friendships I have formed inside the education program and out. I decided to sign up for a Travel Blog because while I studied abroad in Venezuela last May ... read more
