Salta has been treated this winter holiday season to a visit from the Spanish National Circus (or, El Circo National de España). This weekend heralds the final shows before they pack up their big top and depart for a new city on their endless world tour. The Circus has been stationed here in Salta for a month and I thought it too good an opportunity to miss their highly acclaimed show before they head off tomorrow. So, off I went trawling through my mobile phone contacts list in search of someone with kids to tag along with. BINGO! My friend Ana has a young son, Bernardo, (not yet two years old) and she herself was eager to see the show and was more than happy for me to join them. When we arrived at the site ... read more
Thursday night was a bit of a mad one to say the least. As my niece, Antonella is heading back to Cordoba on Saturday as that's where she studys, we decided it was a good excuse to have a Bar-B-Q at our house for the youngsters. (i.e. all of my nieces and nephews and their significant other halves). So after I finished a few hours of private tuition at the house I started running around getting everything prepared before the boys came home to light the fire. Setting the table, pulling extra chairs out from the house, making salads, preparing snacks. I did it all. In the middle of all this I had to shower, change and continue thrashing away at cutting up tomatoes and onions for my salsa appetiser. Thank god for food processors!! Around ... read more
So, it's a fact. I'm now officially 30 years old. I must admit that up until now I'm feeling good. It might have something to do with the fact that I'm currently hauled up in a 4 star lake side hotel with just the sounds of birds and lapping water for company. Oh... and Sergio of course!! So let's go back a few days to the BIG event and start from there..... Friday 11th July was a typical working day for me. It marked the last day of term before the schools broke up for winter holidays, and not only that. It's exam season here, so not only did I have to work on my birthday, I had to administer English exams to the majority of my students. What a tiring day (and few weeks) it's ... read more
This year I feel like the Queen of England as I'm having two birthdays. My unofficial birthday took place yesterday afternoon (9th July) at a beautiful tea room in Salta city, namely: Sabor a Té (Translation for all you non Spanish speaking types: A taste of tea). The 9th July also happens to be one of the most important public holidays in the Argentinean calendar, Independence Day. For the majority, it's just another excuse to have a day off work so I thought I'd take full advantage of people's availability to get 'the mob' together to celebrate the end of an era. Well... the end of my 20's. Which to me signals the end of an era! So all the preparations were made with the tea room on Monday and I hurriedly made all of the ... read more
Last night was the first of a handful of dates to see the Provincial Ballet Company of Salta perform two new works, namely: The Nutcracker & Peter & The Wolf. I must admit that when I heard they would be performing Peter & The Wolf I regressed for a moment back to my childhood days of listening to the story on vinyl. Where do the years go? So, after having "a moment" I decided there and then that as soon as tickets were on sale I was going to run down to the theatre and get me some 'entradas'. I am quickly becoming renowned as quite the Ballet Buff in the family, having been to all of the shows since the Inauguration for the re-opening of the theatre after its makeover and refurbishment back in November. ... read more
