Well Wed 14th I called Roitarian Dr Paul and then went over to Cape Town Hospital, where I spent several hours looking around the children's HIV/Aids ward. It was clinic day so outpatients day. I was able to visit Kiketso which was great. I also talked with a great lady Kate who is helping to run Kidspositive, a charity/social business which helps HIV positive mothers to made and sell beadwork. Fantatsic!! I got back to Aviva house then took the train to Stellenbosch.. which was rarther a long way away - 1 hour 20 mins on the tain. The train got to one station, stopped, reversed 200 yards, then went back to the same station and stopped again.. Also someone I spoke to in Stellenbosch said I was mad to get the train.. and no=one does ... read more

Tuesday 6th was my first visit to the Claremont Rotary Club. The President Roschelle lives around the corner from the AVIVA house and kindly gave me a lift. They meet in the very very fancy Kelvin Grove Club (which is like a mansion and was a former gentlemans club whatever that was, before letting the women in a few years ago!). Everyone was very friendly, I met a couple of Welshies who had relocated to Cape Town, someone from Britsol and a couple from Holyhead in SA for 3 months. I spoke... a little Welsh this time... oh dear, and we exchanged banners again. Not sure about my leave of absence - I think I have a higher rotary attendance then some rccb members in Cardiff!!! :-) It was great fun. The club is quite rich, ... read more

Well we never made it to the tarrot restaurant on Wednesday as the taxi driver said it burnt down. I didn't predict that! Instead we ate at a place called the Obz cafe. The food here is great, very good value. Lots of traditional food, and all the usual mexican, italian etc. Pizza is quite big here. Wednesday was my first big night out. We (as in me and the 4 other girls on my shift - Katie, Holly, Jess and Suzane and Donna who is waiting to join the Gary's surf school project in a few days time) went to Zulu and then Cool Runings on Long Street which is like the Cape Town equivalent of St Mary's Street only longer (!) and with more interesting bars!! We were out until the early hours of ... read more

Thursday it was 37 degrees here.. so the only place to go was.. an air conditonal mall! A short ride away was one of the smaller malls, Cavendish Square in Claremont. How strange though to be trying on billabong one day (very very cheap here) and to be working in an orphange the days before.... Its all girls here in the project by the way, and also in the AVIVA house at the moment, so we had a good shopping trip.. I was very reserved! Its just fun to look round and see all the diffnert things and brands here. Thursday night I went to a Townshipo near Hout Bay, nicknamed Mandela Park, for dinner. I went with one of the volunteers Jess. We were picked up by the tour company organising it, by Shirley who ... read more

Hello all, Well I love it here!!! Surprise surprise!! So from the beginning.. the flight was three hours delayed - due to all the winds in London. I was a little worried as a lot of flights were coming up canceled - the pilot said that some of the equipment to go onto planes had blown into the sides of some of the planes, but the Cape Town one was ok because it was waiting in the shed for us..!!! Anyhow, I flew at about half 7pm. Lots of people were super friendly. I met some locals from SA, and swapped numbers :-) which was a great start. The flight was more like being in a washing machine for 11 1/2 hours - not joking, but was all ok, and good old BA served chicken casserole ... read more
