It was a long haul down to Oregon, but we made it, plants and all! It took us about 5 days to make the entire trip, with one day spent in Vancouver, Canada. We saw a menagerie of ungulates on our drive down, such as deer, caribou, buffalo, and some sort of sheep or goat that did not look like the Alaskan doll sheep or the mountain goat. We also spotted next to the Alaskan Highway a brown bear with a small cub. Maciek and I have been living in Corvallis for about two and a half months now. Corvallis is [View Full Entry]

Greetings! Sayard and I are back in Anchorage. Why, even as I am writting this I am delighting in the smooth refreshment of an Alaskan Summer Ale. Though out homecomming has been sweet, we are once again to be road-bound tommorow. We are moving down to Corvallis, Oregon where Sayard is applying to the Police and I will be matriculating into a Doctoral program in Molecular and Cell Biology. Since I hate packing, I have naturally put it off until the very last possible minute and am now frantically trying to get it done; between sips of beer. Therefore this will [View Full Entry]

Howdy! A lot has happened since our last update. After being a little under the weather in Quito, we decided to take a plane to Esmeraldes on the coast. According to our book, ĻIt is a shame that a place whose name means emerald should be so dirty and dangerousĻ, so we went south to Sua. A nice little beach town, which is just what we needed for some r&r. We spent about a week there beach strolling and sipping Piņa Coladas and gawking at the occasional iguana and ducking bats. On one of our walks to a nearby town we [View Full Entry]

Hello! Sayard and I have been in some more remote areas of Ecuador, sans internet, so there is a lot to go over. We started off by being a bit more touristy and visited the equator. And though I had been raised to believe that this was an imaginary line, it is very real. Painted right there on the ground for all to see and for all to marvel at itīs significance. Later we went off to the small village of Yungillas, just Northwest of Quito in everyones favorite hemisphere. From there we went on a two day trek through cloud [View Full Entry]

Howdy Yáll, Sayard and I are in Quito, Ecuador. And at 120,000 inches of altitude, the first couple of days were exhausting. And you can forget about hard boiled eggs around here unless you have a lot of time on your hands. I mentioned the Cabalgattos in my last posting. It is a great example for examining the differences in liability laws between Colombia and the U.S.A. Imagine if you can, taking 10 people who have never or almost never ridden horses and setting them upon mostly well behaved steeds without the option of a helmet. Then take them galloping down [View Full Entry]

Greetings Friends! Sayard and I are in Medellin, Colombia. Those of you familiar with the history of cocaine and the drug war will recognize the name right away. Internet access here is not readily available to us, so the next posting will likely come next week from Quito, Ecuador. Our activities can be summed up in a word: Party Harty. The Colombians are party fanatics! There are no closed container laws here. If you want a beer, anytime, just pop one open. And if you don't have a beer, no worries, there is usually a guy walking around with a keg [View Full Entry]
