Asia » Singapore April 2nd 2009

Mark: Well, when I left you last, we were on our way to the bright lights of Singapore. And bright lights they were! Though we were worried we wouldn't get there at all, due to our phone being broken in a massive thunderstorm coming from Samui back to the mainland, so we were without an alarm clock! Luckily though, we got a wake up call, and made it to the airport in plenty of time. For me, the first time in 3 months that I would be entering a new country! I was sceptical to be honest, as everything I've heard made me think it would just be a big expensive city, not catering to backpackers, and not holding any real lasting appeal. Well, how wrong I was. It's a small country, but it packs a ... read more

Asia » Thailand March 27th 2009

Mark: Hello! Well, as we leave yet another country, time for another blog methinks! You were left by Louise in Hanoi, about to head back to Bangkok, which we managed without too much incident, spending our final dong on a feast at the ice cream parlour, which pleased Louise greatly! The contrast arriving back in Thailand was enormous, as we were hit by the intense heat immediately. We were wearing our heavy clothes to keep weight down for the flight, so that only served to make it worse. It's amazing what 2 weeks in the cold north can do to even hardened country boys like myself! We'd explored Bangkok last time, so we had no need to see the sights, though I am sure Louise would consider our trip to the market a sightseeing excursion! We ... read more

Asia » Vietnam March 12th 2009

Lou: Well, Mark has updated you on what we got up to in Saigon, but obviously being a boy did not explain the wonder of the ice cream buffet adequately! Mark's friend Ngoc introduced us to the world of Fanny's Ice Cream (no jokes please!) They have an ice cream buffet every Friday night and it was absolutely mad, the place was jam-packed, we had to wait half an hour to get in and when we did get in it was set out like a trendy bar but serving ice cream instead of drinks. Although if you wanted you could get shots to pour over your ice cream to make ice cream cocktails! It wasn't just ice cream, they had fruit, a chocolate fountain, pancakes, it was a magical place! Although possibly they had too much ... read more

Mark: It was great to be back in the big crazy city, and it felt like a bit of a homecoming, especially when I saw my beloved Gon Cafe was still in operation...many an Aussie Burger was had! Amazingly, we spent 2 weeks in and around Saigon, and did, well, not much to be honest! It was really nice to be somewhere where it didn't feel like we were travelling though, and showing everyone round was great fun. We hit the tourist trail; Reunification Palace, War Remnants Museum, the Cao Dai Temple and the Cu Chi Tunnels were all 'done' in swift succesion, leaving plenty of time for the important stuff: fun! For starters I got the fantastic news that one of my best friends from school, Natt, was now living in Saigon, so we met up ... read more

Asia » Cambodia March 2nd 2009

Mark: Well, it's been a while! Too long in fact, and for that I apologise. However, Louise has done a sterling job in my absence I must say... Anyway, back to important matters, when we left you last we had just finished Laos, and were heading off towards Cambodia. Now travelling as a foursome, with Will and Amanda (who'd we'd first met as far back as Namibia!), we hopped on a plane to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Now I say plane, but it was more like a test tube with 60 fat western tourists crammed on... eventually though, an hour later, we landed in Cambodia safe and sound. The Temples of Angkor are a special place, unrivalled worldwide, and I felt priveleged to be visiting for a second time. However, what I didn't bank on was the ... read more

Lou: Hello! Figured a blog was overdue as we've been to 4 more countries since the last entry! Last time we were just about to fly to Bangkok... Well we made it in one piece, our flight was pretty awesome - there was a ridiculous selection of movies, TV, games and even web chat! We went on at about 2 in the morning to see if anyone was awake and I pretended to be a russian called Boris... Anyway, it took us a while to adjust to Thailand after Africa - there were sooo many travellers, it was freezing at night and they don't give you enough food! We had to go out for midnight snacks the first few nights. We went to Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace where someone asked to have their ... read more

Africa » South Africa January 5th 2009

Lou: Firstly hope everyone had a great christmas and new year. Thought it was about time you got an update as we are leaving Africa this week! Can't believe how fast the time has gone. I think last time Mark wrote we'd just arrived in Cape Town back in November. Cape Town was lots of fun, we went up Table Mountain at sunset which was fab and treated ourselves to a cheese board (which is obviously the normal thing to do on mountain tops). Mark had a staring contest with a dassie which is like a huge guinea pig! We went on a wine, cheese and chocolate tasting tour and then decided to go out for cocktails with the people we'd met, which probably wasn't the best idea after a day's drinking! Must have tasted about ... read more

Africa » Namibia November 25th 2008

Mark: Time for another blog I think! when I left you last I believe we were just embarking towards Botswana?! Well this is supposed to be one of the most tricky laborious border crossings in Southern Africa; well, in fact, it was the easiest we've done! Basically the border is crossed by ferry, which takes all the walking you normally do on a border crossing out of the equation! The only problem was that, finally, with us on the ferry, the African rains, which to be fair were a week overdue, decided to arrive. And oh did they arrive! Like a wet weekend in Bridlington! It was bucketing it down, and we obv had just shorts and t-shirt on! Never mind! We got to the camp in Kasane, a town in Chobe National Park, before dark, ... read more

Africa » Zambia November 7th 2008

Mark: Wow! We have had the most amazing 2 weeks! Thought it was about time I got everyone updated cos it's been a while! The last 2 weeks have been spent in Zambia, which has been just awesome. The journey here was (for once!) nice and straightforward, an easy border crossing unbelievably! Though the $150 VISA fee hit hard I must say! We spent a couple of days in a small local town, Chipata, before deciding last monday that we would head for 'Africa's best kept secret' South Luangwa National Park. What should have been a nice straightforward 6 hour journey then turned into the stuff of nightmares! We got on the minibus at 10am. Now I say minibus, but that would imply we had a seat to ourselves but no, they crammed 4 of us ... read more

Africa » Malawi October 23rd 2008

Lou: Hello! So our last update we were about to head to Iringa, which was a lovely little town. We climbed up the Gangilonga Rocks and had fab views over the valley, went to Neema Crafts Centre where they employ disabled and disadvantaged people and make all kinds of crafts, scarves, jewellery, paper out of elephant dung - we had a tour and got to see some of the fresh dung, mmm. That was fascinating to see. And we also managed to have our first ice cream of the trip! The place we were staying had just been revamped as well, we even had a tv in our room and Mark was very pleased as he got to watch Man U! After a few days in Iringa we headed south towards the border, had to stop ... read more
