Time flies when you are having fun...

Well I can't quite believe that I have already been in Cambodia for 3 weeks now - the time just zooms past. Everyday there are new things happening. Today I went to a Khmer cooking class. The tuk tuk picked us up and took us to a village not far away. When we got there we met a khmer lady who took us for a tour around the village and explained a lot of Khmer superstitions and how various plants are used for healing methods (ie, a green banana eaten every morning for 2 months if you have a bad stomach.) She also told us that it is unlucky to tell a woman that her baby is beautiful if it cannot walk yet - instead you must say that it is ugly. For the past 3 ... read more

Returning to Cambodia...

So just over 9 months ago when I boarded the plane to Australia and looked over Cambodia one last time did I realise that it would be so soon when I would be returning. As the plane landed into Siem Reap I got more and more excited, the colours, the flavours, the chaos and most of all the children. Jumping into a tuk tuk we drove towards the center of town and I felt as though I was back home. So this year I am only here for 5 weeks and working at New Hope - a project I visited last year and also spoke of in my blog entries. This project is in the extreme poor area, surrounded by brothels there is a high TB and HIV rate. I have been working an 8-6 day ... read more

April 1st 2010

The night bus left Siem Reap for Phnom Pehn at 7pm and off we went. At first I was happy we had the luxury of air con. However, air con was put at its max. I ended up snuggling closely to another volunteer trying desperately to keep some body heat in. So we arrived and were picked up by the guesthouse tuktuk driver. When we arrived we were shown our room. A plush 2 bedroom apartment complete with a balcony. I could not believe our luck. I had a huge soft double bed with a duvet (I haven’t slept under one of those for 3 months.) I was loving it. However, all good things must come to an end when the following morning we were informed that actually we were put in the wrong room. We ... read more

9 days to go...

Unfortunately Brul has not appeared and I have had no news. The only thing I can do is stay positive and hope that I have had an impact on him even in the short time scale I knew him. The 18th birthday party was fun (although it turned out he was actually 19.) Lots of dolled up Khmer girls and boys turned up. The girls looking glam in their dramatic fake eyelashes and whitened faces and the boys with spiked up hair. We had a whole cow to eat. The westerners were served pieces of beef on platters and a sauce to dip in (which I later found out was fermented fish.) Meanwhile the Khmers ate all the other parts (yes everything.) We were all handed an envelope to put money into as a gift. We ... read more

Missing Brul...

So it has been a pretty intense few days. Firstly little Brul (child I have spoken about a few entries ago that stole my heart) has disappeared. He has been gone for 16 days now. I am going to put his identity on here encase anyone from the area happens to stubble across it on this site. It is very, very frustrating because although it has been reported it obviously isn’t handled the same way as back home. Anything could have happened to him but I am trying to stay positive. We have been working with the family who are very worried and putting up ‘missing’ posters. Speaking to a Khmer teacher at the school I was told that children can be arrested like adults and all shoved in a prison together. Apparently no one is ... read more

So the Puppet Parade was a great success. Hundreds of children from around the Siem Reap area gathered at 7pm for the parade. The whole city came out and the streets were rammed full of people watching and taking photographs. The atmosphere was brilliant. The children from my school made a giant crab which was on wheels and pushed along. All the children (and me) danced along and chanted ‘Grace House, Grace House!’ (the name of our school.) The humidity was sky high and everyone was drenched by the time we had finished but we had so much fun. Everyone gathered afterwards onto a big stretch of land where there was clowns performing (the oddest clowns you have ever seen) and dancing. The children then all jumped into a truck and back they went home. I ... read more

So the heat is really hotting up here and the humidity is rising ready for the super hot months of the year - March and April. I am still struggling under this heat and that combined with the emotional rollercoaster you are constantly exposed to exhausts you. So last week I went out to visit one of the other community projects out here called New Hope. New Hope is set in the poorest area of Siem Reap. It was unbelievable. I went out into the villages. I kid you not practically every building was a brothel and as it got nearer to 6pm prostitutes came and stood outside. Some of these girls all dolled up looked as young as 14. Prostitution is the main form of income within these villages. Little children ran around everywhere totally ... read more

Hello Everyone, It is so nice to know I have so many readers! Keep the comments coming, I really appreciate them. Two young doctors from London have arrived for a couple of weeks which is great news. Every child in the school has been sent in to be examined. However, the doctors eventually stopped weighing and taking the children’s height because they were all severely underweight and under height. The doctors also picked out a lot of heart murmurs. A little boy in my class was sent in and when he took his shirt his chest was covered in severe bruising which was awful. Apparently he had a fever so someone had rubbed his chest really hard with a coin to ‘bring it out.’ It is a common practice over here and must have hurt like ... read more

I have been in Cambodia for 3 weeks now which seems hard to believe although so much has happened. Firstly sorry about the lack of photographs. I have just spent ages trying to upload them only for it to fail on many occasions. I will try again tomorrow. Changes in my class are happening which is great. A volunteer from Australia has nailed bright boards to the sides to display children’s work and attached wire so I can hang things. I have also been to the market and bought 20 little plastic chairs for the children. The look on their faces when they saw they had chairs to sit on instead of the floor was just brilliant! I can also see the Khmer teacher picking up on ideas I have previously carried out with the children ... read more

A week in Cambodia...

January 14th 2010

So I have been here for just over a week now and I am slowly beginning to acclimatise to the poverty and the heat. Everything at the school is going well. I’ll be honest it has to be the most challenging teaching I have ever done. In Cambodia teaching is not regarded in such high stead as it is in the Western world, therefore you do not need to be trained or particularly well educated and the pay is minimal. Being put in a classroom full of 25 3-8 year olds can be difficult at times especially when they are not used to structure and don’t speak the language. Anyway we are getting there very slowly. At the moment it is a case of me teaching the class for half the day and the Khmer teacher ... read more
