So here i am.....finally made it to India after many years of being facinated by the country .....and (hopefully) all it has to offer.
So for those of you that don't know my plans, i'm off on my travels for however long my budget lasts out..........could be three months if i'm extravagant, could be six if i scrimp and save! Will be visiting India, Nepal, Tibet and maybe Myanmar, Laos and Thailand, time and money permitting. i'm here with my tried and trusted travel companion Micky Lall, who i travelled through Vietnam and Cambodia with a couple of years back. Bring it on.......!
Hello all, how are you doing? This really is going to be short and sweet. I've got a stinking cold, so all i can think of is crawling back to my bed for a nap. This is probably the best internet connection i am going to have for a while, so i though it best just to get on with it! Since i last wrote i've hit the road again. Leaving Mamallapuram was sad, but it was time. I have met some great people and made some even better friends, so i'm sure i will be back at some time. Working with Earth Aid was one of the best things i have ever done and the experience was amazing! So, its been good to get back on the road again. I found it quite a daunting

But that does mean i've got a lot of catching up to do.....uh oh! I'm going to narrate mostly with photos, because i'm sure that is the only part most of you look at. In fact i know its the only part most of you look at because you have told me (Emily Jones!), apart from my dedicated family of course! Since i last wrote i've been in Mamallpuram volunteering with Earth Aid India, which has been great. It was a massive culture shock to start with, you really do get to see REAL Indian life. I was so shocked to see how some of these people in the remote villages live.

However, i did do something constructive in the 3 days here. I've arranged to come back to Mamallapuram to work for an aid agency called Earth Aid Asia. I am going to be working with a local Health Worker, visiting the surrounding villages, and assisting with any health problems they may have. I'll find out more tomorrow, but i'm really excited, if a little apprehensive! All those lectures i went to for the 6 months i was doing my tropical nursing qualification seem to have vanised from my brain, aahhh! So from here Mike and i headed to Chennai (aka Madras) for a few nights. We searched high and

Left a bit earlier than planned, Mike was getting restless and so was i, to my surprise! Maybe after too many days on the road i was finding it had to relax! Not too sure, or maybe i was just eager to get to the next destination.....Kerala. It was a 16 hr overnight train to Cochin in Kerala, and it was not to the usual standard of trains we have travelled in the past. Delayed by 3 hrs, we didn't get on it till 2am, a grumpy Katie needed her sleep, only to find a smelly sweaty man in her assigned 'bed' or 'shelf'! Anyway, the man shifted, but his

As soon as we stepped out of the front door, there was a massive dump of rubbish, 3 cows were making a meal out of, and the pollution was minging, how sceanic! Cabin fever got the better of us and we got a auto-rickshaw to a restaurant recommended by the lonely planet.....wasn't going to risk any free-styling today! restaurant ok, but not what its was hyped up to be! so early to bed in preparation for the morning.........sunrise at the Taj Mahal! i think the lonely planet sum it up well 'even the greatest of poets havn't been able to express, in words, the beauty and splendor of

Not loads to do.....which was a good thing.....saw an uninspiring palace, a lake, shops, restaurants.......most of which were on the hotel roof tops and had amazing views over the lake, i was quite happy just sitting with my book in one hand and a beer in the other..........was definatly due some chill time! watched the obligatory James Bond Film 'Octopussy' which was filmed here, and got overly excited when i saw some of the land marks where i'd been. decided to stay a fourth night so we could do cookery course........it came highly recommended.......and although very expensive was well worth it, especially as we got to eat the end result...mmmm! The teacher was a lady called Sushma, and we were promised an 'experience of devine cooking'.........sounded good.

Visited a great fort on the hill and in true tourist stylee wore the Britney Spears head sets and did the walking tour around. it was v opulant,i really feel i could slip into that lifestyle quite easily! we then went to a amazing palace, of which 1/2 had been turned into a hotel. feeling a bit flush we decided to treat ourselves in the restaurant.......when we said we just wanted a drink and a snack, we were ushered to the bar.....can't think why they were looking down their noses at us??!! anyway mike preceed to lower the tone by being generally uncouth and i just cringed!

Vodka, Gin, Rose liqour, you name it i had it! Then we invited Sanjeev up (drivers not allowed to dine with guests normally, he had to ask owners permission???) and with him came a bottle of whiskey! we mingled with a mixed crown of aussies, americans, few brits and indians, mostly all over the age of 40! met a great 70 yr old women from uk that spends 1/2 the year in india travelling, she had been in the north last week, and bumped into none other than the Dalai Lama, quite a tale to tell! and

So a 4 hour drive from Mandawa and here we are. Once again its dirty smelly and crazy! we again find a lovely old hotel, the owner has royal blood, his grandfather was a Maharaja, and owns a string of property throughout india. its diwali today so the place is really busy, but its a great atmosphere seeing all the families out in their best outfits shopping together. infact i've just had my hand decorated in henna to celebrate. not been hassled at all and now that mike is here
