Sniff, sniff....last post of my trip. After returning from Paris I spent the last few days in and around London. I spent Thursday afternoon at the War Cabinet/Churchill Museum, which was one of the best museums I went to in London, would highly recommend it. Then I spend Frid in Grenwich at the Observatory and Maritime Museum. The observatory is home of the Prime Meridian Line (Longitude 0 degrees) and is used as the reference line for Greenwich Mean Time. On Saturday I went to Oxford. It was a lovely town with cute shops and beautiful colleges. I walked by Radcliffe Camera (a building in which some of the Harry Potter scenes were shot) and went to a couple of museums, then met up with a friend from university who is attending Oxford for dinner. March 25th 2010

I arrived in Paris on Monday - proceeded to get lost, except this time I left my ginormo bag in London (thanks Jenna/John) and took my much lighter reasonable sized bag to bring to Paris. This helped when I spent an hour searching through side streets for my hotel……or as I found out a hostel with angry people in charge. However I got in safely. I visited the many of the standards tourist haunts within Paris, Eiffel tower, arc de triomphe, the louvre, Musee D’orsay, and the musee des beaux arts, and Sacre Coeur. I also took a day trip to Versailles. Chateaux de Versailles is phenomenal….gardens are lovely and I even rented a bike (with a basket, how cute was I?) and cruised around grounds! On my last morning I went to a fabric market.....some ... read more

March 25th 2010

London Part Deux OK, so last Thursday I moved to Jenna and John’s place to stay for a few days. Had a great time. Thursday I went to the British Museum and cruised down Oxford Street to do some window shopping. On Friday, I went to the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge and Design Museum. All three very cool. On Saturday, Jenna and I went to the Tate Modern art gallery and spend some time eating our way through yummy samples at the Borough Market. On Saturday night, Jenna, John and myself went out for dim sum at a restaurant in Notting Hill with the best name, Ping Pong (love, love, love it), which had great food and yummy cocktails, then we proceeded to a pub and met up with Ed. After that we went ... read more

For those of you who have not seen the movie “The Holiday” with Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Cameron Diaz and Jack Black, you might want to stop reading now - because this the part of my trip I think I most looked forward to, yet is the least interesting for most people, which was visiting the area where they filmed in England! After doing my research (I know, I’m pathetic) I found out that the pub in the film is actually a real pub call the white horse inn in a small town called Shere in Surrey. Turns out it is just a 20 minute train ride from London! One thing that is quite popular in the UK is “rambling” groups, which are basically walking/hiking groups. England has a huge network of walking/hiking trails and you ... read more

Hello from London - I arrived in London on Friday night from Cornwall and travelled to my friends Jenn and Ed's place in East Dulwich located in the southeast part of the city. On Saturday we did a leisurely tour of thier neighbourhood and then bought some things to make dinner. Ed suggested a proper "bangers and mash" would be appropriate. True to his word he made an excellent bangers and mash. On Sunday we went to Spitalfields Market in the afternoon. There was so many great things it was overwhelming to decide what to at or what to buy - however the large bin of silk scarfs for 1 pound each was appealling. Then we went and had curry at an Indian place on Brick Lane which was also in the area. We passed by ... read more

March 13th 2010

Just finished my second week of upholstery. The town I was staying that was within walking distance of the class but was very small so the evenings were a bit slow....however I started reading "Twilight" and as predicted by anyone who has read it, I couldn't put it down so that kept me busy! The 20 minute walk to my upholstery course was lovely, through rolling Cornish farmfields. The fields were built up at the edges with wire-y trees and bramble hedges that made me feel like i was in a labyrinth.....I was just waiting for David Bowie to walk around the corner! The chair I worked on this week was awesome - I got to do Tufting (or deep buttoning as it is also called). I didn't get to the fabric part but I've attached ... read more

On Sunday morning after travelling to St. Austell the night before, I got up and took the bus to the Eden Project. The place was phenomenal, truly a sight to behold. It's basically a massive garde with huge biodomes and education center promoting good environmental practices, sustainability, eating and buying locally grown food, as well as sustainable agriculture. You can go to thier website at www.edenproject.com for more info. I was totally impressed. I was there for almost 4 hours and didn't even get to see everything. Also when I visited, being only the beginning of March there were only a few of the bulbs coming up, and I can't even imagine how beautiful it will be here in about a month. There must be hundreds of thousands of plants/bushes/trees on the property. They one massive ... read more

I completed my week in Kendal and finished the seat of the chair I was working on. Even with the instructors there helping, doing all the proper steps to upholster a piece takes a long time, even for a basic chair. I’ve attached a picture of what I did. There is also a photo of me with Marion, my instructor and some people working in the shop (I was one of two students there this past week, but there are others there who work for Kendal Upholstery). All in all, a great experience. After I finished up on Friday, I got back on the train and headed to Bath which is northwest of London. I did a tour of the Roman Baths, went to Pulteney Bridge, and went to the Fashion Museum. The Roman baths were ... read more

March 4th 2010

Greetings from Kendal......Just finished day 4 of my 5 day course and thought I update you on the week. The upholstery class is great. It's held in a old stone barn that they rent just outside of Kendal on a beautiful country road. There are some picutres attached. And my instructor, Marion, is actually younger than me (yes I know you all assumed that upholstery is for old bittys but, it can be young and hip too!). Marion is from France and five months ago she knew almost no English and now she is doing all the instruction for the courses that they hold, which is pretty impressive. She also stays in the same accomodations that I am so she can drive me back an forth to the course every monrning (very convenient). However, she drives ... read more

Hello from Edinburgh! Arrived in the City on Friday afternoon to a wet, blustery day. Got out my trust umbrella and proceeded to drag my gigantic bag up the cobble roads trying to find my hostel. At one point I stopped to put my gloves on and had my open umbrella in the cruck of my arm when a huge gust of wind came through took my umbrella with it.....it proceeded to blow across the road, hit 2 cars, 1 pedestrian and then finally someone stopped it for me. I didn't have alot of time here so I really only managed to visit Edinburgh Castle which took most of the day on Saturday (after a leisurely breakfast and walk around the city), as well as the Palace of Hollyroodhouse, the official residence of the Queen in ... read more
