Wednesday 22nd June 2011 Into Rome by courtesy bus and train - today is going to be a hot one ! As luck ( rather than good planning ) would have it we decided to take the tube and visit St Peter's first. Unknown to us Wednesday is the day the Pope addresses the crowds in St Peter's Square and arriving at 10:50 for an 11:00 start could not have been timed better. With the heat in the mid 30's we decided to give the long queue for the Vatican museum and Sistine chapel a miss and head over to the ancient city. However along came a 'hop on hop off' bus and we 'hopped on'. From Max's perspective a good idea ( no route march and sat in the sun on the top deck ), ... read more

Tuesday 21st June 2011 North today to Rome stopping on the way to pay our respects to the World War II fallen at Monte Cassino. Our stop is at the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery on the western outskirts of Cassino and is the final resting place of the British, New Zealand, Canadian, Indian, Gurkha and South African casualties. The Battle of Monte Cassino also known as the Battle for Rome was a costly series of four battles during World War II, fought by the Allies against Germans in early 1944 with the intention of breaking through the Winter Line and seizing Rome. The capture of Monte Cassino came at a high price. The Allies suffered around 55,000 casualties in the Monte Cassino campaign. German casualty figures are estimated at around 20,000 killed and wounded. Hard to ... read more

Sunday 19th June 2011 Sorrento to Pompeii Short ( in theory ) drive from Sorrento to Pompeii where the campsite is within two minutes walk of the ancient city. However we had not factored in the fact that what seemed like the whole population of Naples had decided that it would be a good day to go to the seaside. Even though we were headed toward Naples the ensuing chaos affected traffic flow in both directions. Particularly fascinating were the scooters and motorcycles that wove in and out of the congested traffic at speed often missing oncoming vehicles by inches. Normal traffic rules do not appear to apply here. In one spot traffic joining from the right and turning left across the carriageway appeared to assume right of way and when challenged by me edging forward ... read more

Wednesday 8th June 2011 Arrived bright and early in Bari on the Superfast overnight ferry from Patras. Back in a land where our sat nav functions - thankfully - as getting onto the road south proved interesting having to navigate through the congested streets of this port city. We were headed to Alberobello recommended ( thanks Barry ) as a must see place. Alberobello is a small town and comune in the province of Bari. It has about 11,000 inhabitants and is famous for its unique Trulli houses part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites list since 1996. Once we turned west from the coast road the drive became very pleasant across rolling countryside. Here we passed farms and houses built in the Trulli style. Alberobello is a sizeable town of which the old part is ... read more

Friday 3rd June 2011 Up and off today to our final Greek sightseeing destination that of the ancient site of Olympia where the original Olympic games were founded. The first stage looked easy on the map, about 80 miles of motorway, and started as expected following signs for the A8 to Patras. However either we missed the turning ? ( I don't think so ) or this mostly imaginary motorway is still under construction for some 70 miles. During this epic we endured endless roadworks with 'interesting' lane changes, thousands of cones and some absolutely spectacular Greek driving but thankfully no traffic jams. They even had the cheek to charge a toll for one section that was restricted to a single lane in each direction and in a poor state of repair ! Which just goes ... read more

Wednesday 1st June 2011 Leaving Mycenae for the site of Ancient Nemea situated in a quiet and utterly peaceful valley, chosen as a venue for one of the Big Four ancient Greek Games. Then as now it would have been normally quiet and unvisited - erupting briefly into pulsating activity only for the period of the Games. The Sanctuary site where the three columns ( additional ones have been reconstructed in more recent times ) of the Temple of Zeus have stood since the 4th century is impressive and visitors are able to walk within the temple and get a feel for the original scale of the building. The museum is superbly laid out - with models of the site as it was which you can compare directly with the view through a picture window. Here ... read more

Monday 30th May 2011 A short drive today from Tolo to Mikenes near ancient Mycenae calling on the way at the delightful seaside town of Nafplio. The town was the first capital of modern Greece, from the start of the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. Due to its strategic position it has quite a chequered history changing hands between the Ottomans and Venetians time and again. Its harbour is guarded by three castles one on a small island ( Bourtzi ), another just above the old town ( Akronafplia ) and one capping a tall cliff above the town ( Palamidi Fortress ). The town itself has narrow atmospheric streets lined with elegant Venetian houses. We strolled along the harbour and then into the town. In Syntagma ( Constitution ) Square we found the Venetian ... read more

Saturday 28th May 2011 Leaving Metamorfosi North to Epidavros then West across the Argoli peninsular to the resort of Tolo on the opposite coast. NIce drive through hills and dales on a reasonable road. On arrival set up TV for the evening's big match - The final of the European Champions League from Wembley - Manchester United v Barcelona. After lunch beach time and swimming in the sea, which is now reaching a nice temperature, so much so even Max gets in ! Disappointment later when Barca take United apart and win 3 -1. Having watched Barcelona weekly throughout our winter in Spain I wasn't surprised at the result but had hoped Alex might have come up with a solution to thwart their stunning passing game. Oh well maybe next year.... Sunday 29th May 2011 Day ... read more

May 30th 2011

14th - 28th May 2011 Leaving today to drive south down the coast to a small village on the mainland near to the island of Poros called Metamorfosi. Here we rented a villa with friends and family for the next fortnight - well we do need a holiday from all this travelling ! After booking the villa we discovered it belonged to John Humphrys of BBC fame and he had written a book about the trials and tribulations of building it with his son Christopher who lives in Athens. After a stunning drive down the coast we arrived at Villa to be greeted by Chris who was cleaning the swimming pool. We duly settled in and made use of the pool and sun terrace. The villa is set in a superb location above a bay facing ... read more
