Headed off to Pokhara on Thur 01/Nov leaving behind some gear, in safekeping, at the Thorong Peak Hotel. We were traveling by the Golden Travel bus service at US$13=$14 each as we didn't want to risk a repeat of the local bus experience we had coming into Kathmandu. We just got a taxi (100R=$1.80) to the bus departure place to get our 7am bus. This bus was not quite as flash as we had expected, having traveled Greenline previously, but it did include a newspaper, a bottle of water and a lunch at a resort stop along the way. (Even got full leg space & full access to the aisle.) We were soon in another almighty traffic jam that took some inventive driving to get beyond - our driver was up to the challenge. The drive ... read more

We had decided, along with Sue, that we would do the same trek Parshu Ram (Harry) had taken us through on our previous visit here. That is, a 10-day trek up to Muktinath & flying back down from Jomsom to Pokhara. Last time I did this walk I felt, at the end, I did not want to do much more than I had, & this time, with a back 5 years older, wanted to carry less of a load. Costs for our 10-day Muktinath trek Trek Permits 6000R=$107; Guide 9000R=$161; Porter 5000R=$89; Sleeping bag/Trekking stick hire 800R=$14; Maoist "voluntary" donation 3000R=$54; Van to take us to start point 1500R=$27; Plane Flights 16530R=$295; Flight Tax 840R=$15; food & accom get paid as you go. We had organised our overland trip from Lhasa to Kathmandu in the very early days of our tour. When in Kunming we had seen Mr Chen, whose name appeared in the Lonely Planet to set things up for us. We had the belief it was really difficult to acquire permits for such travel & that few were in the position to acquire such things. So, Mr Chen set up our 5 day overland trip at the all inclusive price of 8000Y=$1230 (about $410 each), typically the price for a group of four, but we wanted the car to ourselves, so went this option. We paid a 3000Y deposit to Mr Chen at the time with the residue to be paid to his office in Lhasa. We made contact with the Lhasa office a couple of times ... read more

Arrived Lhasa from Xian on Fri 19/Oct. The flight was great, a little turbulent at times, but I do love the flying thing. The terrain we could see as we approached our destination was pretty special. Mountainous, but stark, any growth on these slopes has cammouflage colours of those grey/greens. Some distant peaks were snow capped & the odd turquoise lake was visible. Beautiful, but it looks, even from here, to be such a hard land to live in. Lhasa airport was small compared to the ones we've seen lately, looking more like an Aussie regional stop, but the facilities have all been revamped & look new & slick. We soon had our baggage & had found the 25Y=$4 shuttle bus to the city. The first few K's of this route were gunbarrel straight as we ... read more

We secured our train tickets to Xian the morning of its departure (Tues 16/Oct) but were unable to get sleepers at this late stage - a hard seat 66Y=$10. It was surprisingly easy to get the tickets, & then later on, to get the train from this very modern looking station of Yichang. We hadn't much time to look around Yichang, but it was more time then we had planned. It struck us a rather liveable city with many new looking facilities and infrastructure in place. Its close proximity to the tourist site, the Three Gorges Dam, probably meant a lot of investment was forthcoming. Yichang has a population of 3.9mill & sits at an elevation of 134m. The train journey was 17hrs starting at 3.20pm & arriving 7.30ish the next morning. The seats we had ... read more

I remember hearing of the Curse of the Yangtze some time ago, but, like most, dismissed it as a load of poppycock. I find, however, I have had to rethink my position in light of recent events. See what you think. The next item on our list of things to do was a Yangtze River cruise, so the place you go, where most of these tours start from is Chongqing. We had a 7.50pm flight out of Lijiang (on Wed 10/Oct) and after some concerned moments in our taxicab, where we thought "He's misunderstood, the airport can't be this far away!" we made it to the fairly new Lijiang airport. We were heading to Chongqing via Kunming despite the two being in opposing directions but finally reached our destination a little before 11.00pm. After the usual ... read more

Monday (08/Oct/07) opened up as a pretty cloudy day but we figured we'd stick to our plans & head to Jade Dragon Snow mountain area on the local bus to check out the Cloud Fir Meadow chairlift to an elevation of 4500m. We had found that weather conditions can change rapidly & what starts out a lousy day can soon become a fine one. We thought the local bus trip of ~50km for 10Y each was good value & if the day did not change we simply head back - out of pocket only a few yuan. Well, we came unstuck somewhat, when we struck a people 'toll booth' as we entered the Mountain area. The toll of 160Y ($25) meant this was a no repeat excursion - we had to do what was to be ... read more

Asia » China » Yunnan » Tiger Leaping Gorge October 6th 2007

Tiger Leaping Gorge is an almost compulsory mini-trek for visitors to this region. We were no exception. We looked around Lijiang for information & found package tours on offer for 600Y & 580Y, found some hand drawn maps at local cafes & asked questions from locals 'in the know' and decided to do it ourselves. Tiger Leaping Gorge is where the mighty Yangzi River cuts its way between Haba Snow Mountain and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain creating one of the deepest gorges in the world. The entire gorge measures something like 16km at river level & its a giddy 3900m from the waters to the snowcapped peaks. This spectacular natural attraction may not be around for too much longer, either, if Yangzi damming plans go ahead. There's talk of building 8 dams stretching over 564km of ... read more

Left Dali about 9am on the 1st Oct heading for Lijiang, 160km north. The road was quite good, but not the freeway & tunnels involved in our trip from Kunming to Dali, although it won't be too long before this is the case as we could see the support structures already in place for an elevated road through the higher ground paralleling much of our trip. This trip took us higher into mountainous regions affording spectacular views at times (except when driving through clouds). But still much area under crops & it did seem there may be more birds in this region judging by the numbers of stick figure scarecrows to be seen - unless, of course, it was just laundry day. Lijiang is at an elevation of around 2600m and is the stronghold of the ... read more

Apologies, in advance, to any interested readers that much of this may sound like a lesson, but this is essentially a record for my own keeping & will probably contain some dry stuff for others. You've been warned! When originally planning this holiday we chose to visit the Yunnan province as it is renowned for its diversity of local nationalities. This SW area of China borders Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and has, since ancient times, been a overland trade link through Asia, so it probably isn't that weird that there are something like 24 different ethnic groups in this region. A consequence of this fact, is that there is a rich mix of cultures, foods, religions, costumes & appearances to be found here.Kunming is the capital of this province, at an elevation of around 2000m, & it alone has ... read more
