After Kakadu I was supposed to start the Darwin to Alice springs section the next day, but due to an ever so slight exhaustion, I decided to reside in Darwin for a few more days. To get to know Frank and Bobbie a bit better I went to stay with them at the Campsite. They have a van, which they've customised, so there's now a double bed in the back, with underneath storage, a proper stereo and a mini fridge. There's only room for 2 in the van, so they have a HUGE (and I mean huge... you can actually stand up in it) tent (they travelled with a french girl for 2.5 months), which is where I slept. We had great fun getting the tent up on the first night because one of the poles ... read more

If you thought last week was busy wait till you read about this week, I honestly haven't stopped!! Woke up on monday morning and decided on a walk down to the base of the weir (reservoir). On the way I had to walk past the pub. The opportunity to work had been playing on my mind all night, so on a whim I went in and ended up working for 5hrs from 1pm. Since it was easter monday they were more busy than usual for lunch, so I helped clear the tables and wash the dishes. The cafe attached to the bar was huge and within 5 mins I was covered in food from scraping the left overs off the plates. Even though I probably stank of food I really enjoyed it and will remember it ... read more

Hey guys, sorry again for the incredibly long delay. Its really difficult to find the time to sit down and write a blog, especially if there are no computers around. I've decided that since im so behind, im going to start by telling you about my time in australia and will fill you in on my final 2-3weeks in south africa as I find the time. So here it goes... week 1 in australia. I arrived in Perth at 7am, but my body clock was telling me it was still 1am, then had to go through the 3hr customs procedure. Perth is one of the most beautiful and well kept cities I've ever seen and I tried so hard to pay attention to what was going on around me, but the confusion about time, made it ... read more

Hey, Things have been incredibly manic the last 2 weeks which is why im only writing week 5 now. Because of our weekend to Drakensberg we didn't start work at the dream centre again until tuesday. On tuesday morning I woke up feeling really rough and I think I must have caught the stomach bug Malou had last week. I didn't want to pass it onto the patients, who have a compromised immune system, so decided to stay at the 'flat'. It was really strange going up to Thandi's room on wednesday and seeing someone else in her bed. Malou and I went to speak with Vincent (He's the person at the dream centre who's responsible for us) to ask what happens to patient when they die and have no family. He said that when there ... read more

For once I'm actually on time with writing this entry, lol. Im not going to say much about the Dream centre this week other than that it was a very stress full week -you can read about this on my be more web blog ( http://www.laurashapcott.ishelping.org/ ) As a quick summary, all the nurses went on strike on monday and didn't work again until friday. They haven't been paid for the last month and are getting angry with the management because they think the direction are taking all of the money for themselves. Monday was a very scary and stressful day because the nurses were protesting at the front of the building and the armed forces came to remove them from the premises (don't worry no one got hurt and we were safe in our flat). ... read more

This week I started work at the Dream centre and you can read more about what I've been up to there on my "Be more" travel blog. (Be more is the charity im here with) The link is: www.laurashapcott.ishelping.org The Dream Centre is an AIDs hospice that helps people in the final stages of the disease, either get treatment so they can go home, or make their final weeks/days more comfortable. It goes without saying that this week has not been the easiest of weeks and going to meet the patients on the first day was definitely a shock to my system. On a tuesday evening we run a bingo night for the patients, which is an absolute joy to do, and out of the 80 or so patients that are staying at the Dream Centre ... read more

Hello again, Week 1 and week 2 come in quick succession and from now on I will try to write about things as they happen. Not much really happened during the week, except I went to one of the beaches in central Durban and met some nice life guards - baywatch shorts an all :p At the weekend I went away with the friends I've been staying with and some of their friends. We stayed at a place called The Estuary in Port Edward, which is in the middle of nowhere along the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal. We were renting a huge villa right on the edge of a lagoon that boarders a nature reserve and when we arrived the sun was setting so the views were spectacular. We got up really early in the ... read more

Hey guys sorry its a bit late, but here's what I got up to during my first week: The plane journey was long, but then again that goes with out saying, what do you expect when you fly to South Africa on your own! The heat hit me as soon as I got off the plane, it probably wasn't hot for South Africa, but when you're comparing it to the snow we've just had in the UK it was BOILING! You wouldn't think it, but the heat made me feel much more tired than I actually was and for the first couple of days I felt like a Zombie. Im staying with friends in Durban, who used to live opposite us in the UK, and who moved back to South Africa just over 2 years ago. ... read more
