You have to know that Florence has two separated "hearts", one few meters from the other. The political heart of the city is Piazza della Signoria, where Palazzo Vecchio is found. The spiritual heart of the city is Piazza del Duomo, where the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral is found. This division is known since the ancient times, where the Guelphs and Ghibellines were factions supporting, respectively, the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor.
