As much as we loved Laos it was time to move on to Thailand, the last country we'll be visiting on this memorable and amazing trip. On our last night in Luang Prabang in Laos we decided to order a sandwich before we had to catch our bus to Vientiane when we felt someone come up behind us and give us a hug and say hello. It totally caught us off guard, who do we know in Laos? But it was none other than Matt and Kate! The couple we met on the first week of our trip on Cat Ba island in Vietnam. Oh how bittersweet it was to see them, we literally had no time to waste to get to the bus station and they had just gotten off the bus and were looking ... read more

If you want to see something really scary watch me get off a bus at 6:30 in the morning after traveling for 26 hours straight from Siem Reap in Cambodia to Vientiane in Laos. It's the stuff nightmares are made of, one wrong look and I'll shoot you my death glare and it is hot! Too bad we were a day late for Halloween, I could have went as myself and scared some kids. In hindsight we would have planned out our trip a little better geographically speaking, since we're heading north again not too far from where we started in Hanoi, Vietnam and we have to go back south to Bangkok to head back home, but oh well! A few more hours on the bus won't kill me, now whether I kill someone else is ... read more

Aw Kohn, Cambodia

The Khmer written language does not use the Roman alphabet, Aw Kohn means thank you, but the spelling in the title is only phonetic. It's really amazing how crossing the border into Cambodia has changed our trip. The differences seem subtle yet very apparent all at the same time. I tried to articulate the differences from the cuisine and I couldn't even form the right words, Khmer food is so similar to Vietnamese but the taste is distinctively different. We knew upon arriving that we were entering a country still healing from the genocide of the Khmer Rouge in the 70's, but meeting the survivors and their children puts a new perspective on it. Our first full day in Phnom Penh was a busy one. We first visited the Tuol Sleng Prison, a former high school, ... read more

After 3 short days we're leaving the amazing city that is Saigon, leaving Vietnam for that matter. After completing our open bus tour from Hanoi to Saigon it's time to say goodbye. We're just over half way done with our trip and it's time to move on. The open bus tour was a good choice for us, it was easy to book onward trips from each city and the buses left at the same time everyday making it easy to plan ahead. The only negative thing about it was when we booked our tickets from the travel agency in Hanoi we left the city on a very nice and new sleeper bus with a bathroom and the travel agent promised us we would be on the same type of bus all the way to Saigon. This ... read more

When taking a trip to Southeast Asia for 3 months you have to expect some negative experiences to occur, its only natural. The good always comes with the bad and sometimes the ugly, but it's these experiences combined that make these kinds of trips worthwhile, hopefully you come away a better person with more maturity and a different way of looking at the world. In the last 2 weeks a lot has happened and I hope I can remember it all starting from mean tailors to giant cockroaches. But it's not all bad, just bare with me. We've already written two blog posts about Hoi An but we spent so much time there that there's even more to say. We spent the majority of our time right in the city and took only one sightseeing trip ... read more

Oh, Vietnamese food, you are so delicious! Apart from our horrible fish soup in Dong Van we haven't had a bad meal anywhere. Street food is really where it's at, so cheap and so delicious but we've sat in plenty of good restaurants too. Since my paternal grandmother died many years ago the art of genuine Vietnamese cooking has been lost to me. My grandmother was renowned for her cooking, to this day my family speaks of how great of a cook she was. But I was too young and naive to pay attention at the time, I thought all grandmothers could cook like her. So I figured my best bet for learning how to cook some dishes is in Vietnam itself. I had to be careful when choosing a class though, our daily budget is ... read more

After a 10 hour bus ride south from NInh Binh we arrived in Hue which is located on the coast of central Vietnam. Locals told us we arrived just in time to miss the heavy rains the typhoons brought in. We've enjoyed dry temperate weather since our arrival, the perfect temperature for sight seeing. Hue is interesting because it was the political capital from 1802-1945 under the emperors of the Nguyen dynasty. The biggest attraction in Hue is the Citadel where the emperors conducted their daily business and also where they enjoyed the pleasures of their private life. The Forbidden Purple City was reserved only for the emperor and his concubines and the only servants allowed inside where eunuchs (I guess the emperors were the jealous type). The Citadel is absolutely monstrous, 2.5 kilometers long ... read more

After arriving back to Hanoi from our trip to Ha Gaing and the far northern reaches of Vietnam we decided we needed a rest. After all it was our third time in Hanoi after using it as our base for our other travels and we felt we had seen what Hanoi had to offer. So we ran to the nearest video store which wasn't far and bought some 75 cent movies. We only felt a little bad that we contributed to Vietnam's movie piracy problems but we were in desperate need of indulging in doing nothing. We locked ourselves in our hotel room and watched the entire first season of HBO's Game of Thrones, SO good! But we also watched some bad movies, hate to say it but Columbiana was a bust and Horrible Bosses wasn't ... read more

Sorry for our delay in writing our next post, we haven't had any reliable internet access in the last week because of our remote locations, but please read on, we have so much to share. We can't say enough about beautiful Cat Ba Island and Ha Long Bay, we enjoyed a full week of sunning ourselves on beaches and eating fresh seafood. We met a fantastic British couple the night of our bonfire on the beach and we had several dinners and drinks with them a few days after. When they asked us how long our holiday was we felt proud to say "3 months" but soon choked on our words when they said they would be traveling for an entire year, taking in SE Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and South America and lots of other ... read more

It's hard to describe Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Island with words, I think the pictures say more than I ever could. The beauty is immense and never ending, we really feel like we've stepped into a tropical paradise and we never want to leave. We traveled from Hanoi by bus to Ha Long Bay where we transferred to a boat and began making our way through 1000's of limestone islands jutting out of the South China Sea. I think they might have filmed Jurassic Park here, it has that vibe and you can see what we mean from the pictures. Stunning. We were awestruck as our boat puttered its way through the maze of islands. Our guide stopped us half way through on an island that has massive caves inside and it was pretty ... read more
