So I got an overnight bus to Hue from Hanoi that would take about 12 hours. My first overnight bus experience wasn’t pleasant as the beds were small and uncomfortable and I had my iPod stolen from me while I was sleeping. As I arrived into Hue it was pissing it down and I was drenched as were my bag, sleeping bag and coat and after losing my iPod I wasn’t in the greatest of moods. I eventually found the hostel I had pre-booked and freshened up to start looking for the police station to make a report and when I did was told I’d have to come back the day after as the tourist police station was shut. So not a great day and it rained the whole time. In the afternoon I went to ... read more

So the total journey from Hong Kong was 32 hours to Hanoi. The train to Guangzhou and change on to a sleeper train to Nanning in South West China to catch a bus to Hanoi. Arriving in Nanning at 8am, instead of the scheduled 6am, my first mission was to find somewhere to buy a bus ticket to Hanoi. My first attempt had me in a travel office offering me 300 RMB for a ticket (£30) but while I went to the cash point I noticed the official bus station ticket office and was offered 150 RMB (£15). Welcome back to China I thought, I did miss the constant attempts to rip you off. It just wasn’t the same in Hong Kong. I took the cheaper bus ticket, which included the taxi to the bus station ... read more

Morning arrival into Shenzen our first task was to find the border to Hong Kong. We followed signs but lost them after a while. Feeling rather unsure about how close the border was we kept following the crowds and luckily stumbled across the immigration. It was weird thinking in this huge train station the border was marked and you could cross into the other part of the train station to catch a train into Hong Kong proper. Anyway after an hour journey we got to the hostel and spent the afternoon appreciating the warm weather and the sunset across the harbour. Hong Kong was good fun and had a few nights out with Helen, a friend from my CELTA course back in London. Vodka Jelly nights were very fun! Hong Kong has more things to offer ... read more

So we took the train in the late afternoon, the day after the night out, to Guilin in the south of China. Arriving in sunshine and with slightly warmer weather. The 28 hour journey meant that we were limited to just having dinner with some French guys at the hostel but we planned to go to Yangshuo the day after, an hour and a half bus ride south of Guilin. That day has probably been my favourite day so far on my trip. We arrived about 10am into Yangshuo and after a disappointing climb up a peak where we could only climb halfway we decided to rent some mountain bikes and do a bike tour after lunch. The town itself is a bit touristy, especially down the strip with the cafes, bars, restaurants, handicrafts and knock-off ... read more

Yangtze River Cruise So after an overnight train to Chengdu we caught another train in the early afternoon to Chongqing, which would take up the rest of the afternoon. We arrived in Chongqing at about 7pm and were met by a man called John who ran a guesthouse and organised cruises. We were recommended to him by a staff member at the hostel in Xi’an. He drove the three of us to the booking office and explained to me and Andy about the cruises on offer to us. Saxon wanted to do it in one day on a hydro-foil but we wanted to take a bit more time. Next minute John comes to us and says “You are very lucky! A cancellation has come in for a cabin on a brand new 5 star boat“. He ... read more

How hot? Hohhot! We arrived into Hohhot, Inner Mongolia late in the evening feeling hungry, tired and rather overawed by the garish neon lights and the hundreds of taxis that confronted us outside the train station. Our journey from Mongolia had been trouble free (apart from a temperature gun being pointed at our heads during the border crossing) and the landscape from Mongolia to China didn’t differ. Mostly flat, arid-looking and baron till we reached Hohhot. But with our Honcho to hold our hand we were taken to our hotel, ate and then slept. Next morning we headed to the Museum of Inner Mongolian History, a brilliant museum which helped us to understand the overlap between Mongolian and Chinese History as well as the importance of Inner Mongolia in China. From the Dinosaurs, through to the ... read more

Goodbye Mother Russia It was a short journey (relatively) of 12 hours to Ulan Ude from Irkutsk and it was to be a quick visit and our point of departure from Russia into Mongolia. Arrived at around 6ish and I felt surprisingly awake and ready to tackle the day however the others weren’t feeling so fresh so once we’d met our new Honcho, Ann, we decided to head to the hostel and catch up on some sleep for a couple of hours. Up and ready to go we went to a Buddhist monastery 45 minutes out of town. It was cool to feel like you were in the middle of nowhere and the landscape was very arid and dry. When we arrived the monks were chanting and it added to the atmosphere of the place and ... read more

Lake Baikal So .... 3 nights on the train. Oh my god! To make it worse I was ill. Not a cold but a throat infection and I nearly threw a fit when I found out the train was delayed a few hours. All I wanted was to get to a doctor. I spent most of the 3 days curled up in my cabin which I was sharing with the locals as it was my turn in the group of 5 to be cast out to the next door cabin (cabins only slept 4 people). Lemsiped up and drinking so much water, nothing was working. We arrived in Irkutsk in the morning and I begged our new Honcho, Ted (Tulya) to take me to a doctor. Ended up being taken to the hospital in the town. ... read more

Moscow Muling So lets start from the beginning... Moscow was a blast! Arrived and felt a bit strange being in a country I've only read about in books and which still has a mixed reputation internationally in the West. But after a day or two the strange feeling wore off and everything became easier. First thing that hit me when I arived into Moscow Domodedevo was not being able to read the signs and notices. So scrambling into my bag for the directions to my hostel, at the same time as being harrassed by the black taxi drivers, I booked a legit taxi to central Moscow. Got there safe and sound! In total I was 5 days in Moscow and the weather was surprsingly milder than I had expected (4C to 8C). Some of the sights ... read more
