We decided to try some two lane highways instead of the usual interstates, mainly the 90 and the 80, when traveling from Billings MT to Novato CA and back. We headed out west on the 90 just to get a running start, then down Hwy 191 through the Gallatin Canyon to West Yellowstone, famous for its wide streets, the better to push the snow around in the winter. Hwy 20 out of West connects you with the 15 and either 84 or 86 in Idaho, probably a little of both, just to get to Twin Falls, which if you don't start from Billings at 6am is a reasonable place to stop for the night, particularly as they have some nice scenery and some good motels and restaurants. By the way, Twin Falls was the site of ... read more

Sailing through Wyoming is sometimes tedious. I was, therefore, understandably excited by an op-ed piece in the Casper ?Star-Tribune? which mentioned some plans for a Billings to Albuquerque high speed rail connection. Turns out it is still in the dreaming stage and probably only from Cheyenne to ABQ. Why don't the states and the feds build the multiple new tracks needed and then let transportation companies compete to move freight and people up and down the Rocky Mountain front? Took some things to an auctioneer where I found some odds and end from various parts of the 20th century. They had a whole display case full of working slide rules which raised the temperature of my almost dried out nerd juices quite a bit. We saw a couple of baseball games at Coors Field, but the ... read more

We just finished a quick trip to Albuquerque to check up on our grandson Diego. Had some trouble in Wyoming where our Saab died, more accurately, the Saab's battery gave up the ghost. Rumors via his mother that D is talking up a storm are mostly true. We had a fun time on the New Mexico RailRunner from downtown ABQ to downtown Bernalillo and back. Maybe this is the wave of the future. State and city governments building the necessary transportation from city to city. In this case it is Albuquerque to Santa Fe, which is supposed to be up and running by December 2008. They actually run down to Belen and out to Bernalillo in the north right now. See above map. I don't know what the morning and afternoon ridership is but the mid-day ... read more

Well, I'm back in Montana now, with pictures downloaded to iPhoto, several notebooks full of notes, my store of ignorance considerably increased, and my humility titer raised several notches. Not surprisingly, the trip itself both exceeded and did not quite live up to my expectations. What journey does? Almost incredible changes are taking place in China in a fairly short period of time but the veneer of Western-style freedoms and such things as accommodations, helpful tour guides and tourist organizations, and government officials willing to tell the truth is fairly thin in most places. These pictures may serve as a way to introduce you to the diversity of sights and scenes seen by me in China during September 2006. By the way, Mao’s Mausoleum (above) is one of the major tourist stops in Beijing: you ... read more
