We got to take the barge across the Jardine River. You can’t drive across because it is too deep and there are too many crocodiles in it. We set up camp at Punsand Bay. Our campsite is right on the beachfront. The waves are really noisy at night. The water goes out very, very far at low tide. In the morning, we got up really early and went to the “Tip”. When we got there it started to rain. We got soaked. We had to walk back a long way to the car, but we dried off on the way. Now I have to go to the Eastern most point of Australia to have done all 4 points. ... read more

At Eliot and Twin Falls it was hard to chose where we were going to set up for camp. After we set up we went for a swim at Twin Falls, it was not very deep in the water. I had lots and lots of trouble getting to the falls because it had a strong current. I had to get help from my Mum or Dad. On the last day there I was able to swim to the falls by myself. We went for a drive down the Old Telegraph Track one day while we were camped. That way we didn’t have to drag the trailer and worry about anything getting broken on either the car or camper. At Gunshot Creek, my Dad went up the chicken run. It was very steep when I looked at ... read more

At Weipa we went to the Caravan Park and booked in. I met some friends in the pool at the caravan park. On Tuesday we went on a mine tour. I thought it was not very much fun because you could not get off the bus. I got to sit next to my friends, Emily and Lillie. I got to swim in the pool every day. There were cane toads at the water tap right near our camp, but they only came out at night. One jumped on my toe. I followed a bird around the campground trying to take his photo. Mum told me it was a Jabiru, so I called him Mr. Jabiru. ... read more

In Normanton we went to the Railway Station. There were some Brolgas outside that were fed every afternoon with some bread. I liked them. In Karumba I got a sunnyboy. There was not much to do so, when we did what we had to do, we left. After a long time, we came to Dunbar Station. In this station people were branding the cows so they wouldn’t get lost. We camped at Mitchell River you could not get across because there was no ford in the water. If you tried to get across and you got stuck it was $500 to get towed out. As well there was “salty’s” (salt water crocodiles) in the water. ... read more

At Leichhardt Falls I walked on rocks, big rocks; sometimes I had to jump when I went for a walk with my Dad and my brother. We walked around the falls and found clay. Leichhardt Falls is just east of Burketown, on the way to Normanton.... read more

At Winton I bought a glass heart keyring which is green and white and very pretty. We camped at Bladensburg National Park with some friends (Richard & Di) we met on our trip. My brother and I saw some kids swinging off a stick with rope. After a while I got the courage to join in with the fun. One time I was swinging on the rope, my hand got sore and it slipped off and I fell in the water. My clothes & I got soaked. But they dried off. At Kingfisher Camp in the afternoon I found cows eating grass. I chased them away. In the morning when I got up, my Dad had a fire going. After lunch, my Mum picked me up and took me under the sprinkler. That night there was ... read more

Longreach is where Qantas started. We went to the Qantas Founders Museum. They had little model airplanes going around the ceiling. One was the first plane that was used to start Qantas. It was an Avro. We did a tour around the museum and original Qantas hanger from 70 years ago. We also did a “Secrets of the Boeing 747” tour. The last service it operated was 9th November, 2002 from Perth to Sydney. This plane brought home the Bali Bombing survivors before being retired (decommissioned). It was delivered to Longreach on 17th November, 2002. I got to sit in first class, right near the front of the plane. Qantas stands for Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Services. ... read more

It was a long dusty road to Birdsville. When we got there we looked around for a long time, but we finally found a campsite beside the river, under the windmill. We set up camp and drove out to Big Red. Big Red is a huge red sand dune at the start of the Simpson Desert. I climbed up it. There was like a platform of sand on the angle, when you got to the top, but you could go up a little mini hill to the side. I got up to the top of it - on my hands and knees, because I was very, very puffed. I was amazed at the beautiful view. After we got back to town - it was 36km’s out - we had tea at the famous Birdsville Hotel. In ... read more

On the way to Birdsville we went through Cameron’s Corner where I sat on a post which meant I was in 3 states at once - New South Wales, Queensland & South Australia. There were lots and lots and lots of big sand dune hills which were like roller coasters, the way Dad drove. When I had my head down or was looking somewhere else, and we went over a sand dune hill, I felt like I was flying!!! At Tibooburra petrol station there was a Corella which could talk and he said hello to me. The Corella said “give me a scratch” to my dad. My dad said, “I’m not scratching you, because the sign says you bite!!” The Corella kept on saying “give me a scratch”. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Broken Hill June 21st 2009

We left in the middle of the night, when we were supposed to be sleeping. We overslept the alarm by 1 hour. It took 10½ hours to get to our first camping spot. We did not have breakfast, instead we had lots of fruit - it was yummy! We had to eat this before we entered Mildura. At Broken Hill at the Miner’s Memorial there was a giant red seat. I sat on it and it looked gianormous next to me. I thought it was a good seat for the Giant from Jack and the Beanstalk. My family and I went on a mine trip near Silverton, just near Broken Hill. After the tour we went into a little town called Silverton. In someone’s yard I saw a cactus. When we got to a shed, I ... read more
