Good Morning ! Well, it’s Tuesday morning here in Kalkan and most of you will be already sleeping of at least thinking of it. With a 10 hour time difference between here and home you could say we are pretty much half way round the world. Yesterday was pretty much a stay at the villa day. It was too hot for wandering about and anyways it was a busy “itinerary” day. At the end of this week our group of seven splits up. Some of us will be going on to Greece before flying back to Istanbul for a couple days before the long flight home to the rainy season. (and that’s beginning to sound like not a bad idea). Heather, Kane, Annie, and Lynn will be going onwards to Greece so there were ferry reservations ... read more

Well the girls are here for shopping and that’s what they did Wednesday. There are so many little shops and vendors tucked in all the alleyways of this small town. Actually I suppose Kalkan is more a big village than a small town, but lots of shops and tomorrow is Kalkan ‘market’ day. The girls have been talking of ‘market days’ since we got here and I suppose the excitement of it all, like little kids waiting for Christmas, is why the bus trip to the Kas market. Just can’t wait ! So while the girls shop, Al and I tag along. Who knows, we may be needed to pack and carry stuff. Of course if we do it will be all uphill ! Obviously there wasn’t expected to be too much shopping as we all ... read more

Well, after five days we have finally gained some internet access and will now be able to continue with hopefully some more regular postings. Trying to find free internet access has been really challenging. Even though lots of sites are located these Turkish folks seem to be very security-conscious as just about all the sites are security enabled. Those that aren’t are generally too weak to offer any sort of reliability,. The problem has been resolved however. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and do what you have to do so we bought an ‘internet stick’ from Turk Cell. Good for two months or 3 gigabytes, and probably whichever comes first so we might as well make it in gigabytes since we are only here for a month. I am sure that 3 gigabytes ... read more

PARIS IN THE FALL

All good things come to an end and we left Nice and the sparkling azure blues of the Mediterranean under blue skies, sunshine and better than warm temperatures on Friday, October 3. That’s only a couple of weeks ago but with the regular routines of living and working day to day it is already beginning to seem like ages ago. Our stop here in Nice on this last quick blur of our tour was just too short. The hazard of jamming too many places into too few days but it certainly gives you some ideas for “next time”. So many places, so many sights, and just not enough time. We didn’t actually just ‘leave’ Nice, it was more like we ‘raced away’ on board one of Frances high-speed TGV trains. At 300 km per hour you ... read more

Life at the Villa II

Sorry about the delay in posting this. Partly due to the fantastic blue skies and sunshine in week two at the Villa, partly due to the travel blur that followed villa life. After our weekend away at Aveiro, Figueia da Foz, and overnight in Porto before the Douro River cruise we returned to our ‘normal’ routine at the villa 22 - 27 September. Monday morning the girls went shopping for some supplies and returned with a much needed “Mata Moscas”, translated as “killer of flies”. In other words, a simple fly swatter. Since today was mostly a relaxation and hang around day, our first cloudy gray day since we got here did not really interfere with anything or dampen spirits. The girls also returned from their shopping expedition with meat and produce they had bought at ... read more

October 3rd 2008

Well these past few days have become a bit of a blur and I haven’t been doing my job keeping this up to date. But, I have a good excuse. So many places to visit, so much to see, so much to do, trains to catch, and if I don’t have a holiday, you don’t get the blog. So maybe I make up for some of the blur with too many photos today. Enjoy ! It really has become a blur since leaving Vigo. So much so that the last entry describing our hotel in Vigo is actually a combination of the next nights hotel, near Gijon in Northern Spain, and the Vigo hotel. The hotel pictures are right though. After our train from Porto to Vigo where we picked up a Europecar rental unit, ... read more

Well, all good things come to an end and sadly so does life at the villa. It has been a wonderful week of pure relaxation, short trips of exploration and adventure seeing beautiful sights,, meeting smiling friendly people who laugh with us as we struggle with different languages, and sharing good times and culinary wonders with our travelling companions. Friday morning we left the villa for a last day and overnight in Porto before continuing on our different paths. Today two will leave Porto in the afternoon and fly off to Amsterdam for a brief three day visit before returning to Edmonton. On Saturday Lynn and one other person will be on the to catch a flights to Heathrow in London for an overnight stay before continuing on to Vancouver and Edmonton. From Edmonton Lynn ... read more

This is a long story today but does it get any better ? It's about our first few days at the villa. Life’s good but at the villa it’s a paradise. It’s just so nice ! Being here at this little spot of nature’s beauty makes one think of other lifestyle opportunities. It will be with great disappointment and reluctance that the eight of us will leave here to return to the ‘normal’ lives we actually live. Being here has given some of us greater insights and an answer to “What would you do if you won the lottery ?” I don't know why this didn't show up but if you click the "villa" on the upper left corner of the black square it will produce the picture. So I added this comment and on reviewing ... read more

September 21st 2008

20 - 21 September Saturday was the end of our first week at the villa and our first ‘weekend’. Naturally we had to leave paradise for a weekend adventure tour so we were off early to Figueia da Foz on the coast about 60 kilometres South of Porto. One of our group had suggested this destination from the commentary in one of the Portugal travel book. “The Foz” was described as having a beautiful beach and many shops and restaurants. From the villa it was about a two hour drive and we set off in two groups planning to meet for lunch. One thing about Portugal is the obvious investment in infrastructure including an amazing network of new highways and freeways, most of which are tolled, but the tolls are minimal and probably and efficient and ... read more
