It really is quite nice. Anyhow, today was our first day on our own so to speak after our “orientation” tour of Old Havana with our guide Anna Lise yesterday. Before we ventured out on our own though we had another orientation to attend with the tour operator. Basically it was an hour to tell us our transfer to the airport in Veraderro was 5 hours before the scheduled departure of the return flight on Monday. So that means our return trip will begin at 2:30A... read more

The adventure began, or was supposed to begin Sunday night at 9:30 PM. About noon on Sunday I checked online to confirm the flight and found departure had been delayed 20 minutes. No big deal until later in the afternoon I checked again and found that the 20 minutes had grown to about 2 hours and we were now scheduled to depart at 11:50PM. But that was still a Sunday departure. We finally ended up being scheduled to depart at 1:40AM, Monday morning, and actually were boarded and moving from the terminal at 1:40AM. The beginnings of this Cuba adventure had begun to remind me of another adventure about 2005 when Robb and I were leaving, or trying to leave, from Glasgow with Canadian Affair. And tonite, after leaving the terminal building we didn’t get far. ... read more

Thursday in Rhodos and great expectations for another glorious beach day when some sort of natural disaster catastrophe struck the island and our plans for the day were dashed. Clouds !. All day. The sun tried but just couldn’t seem to break through to salvage a day at the beach. Not until late in the day did it finally break through to clear the clouds for a really nice evening for our last supper in Rhodos. The proverbial silver lining I suppose. It was another one of those “all good things come to an end” days as we left Old Town Rhodos on Friday. It would have been another great beach day if only we could have stayed but Olympic Airlines was waiting for us and holding a couple seats. But before we leave Rhodos I ... read more

All good things come to an end and our time at the villa in Kalkan came to an end after 14 days of sunshine, pool, beaches, and great food. Some of the food the “dining out” variety and some of it the home-made gourmet type. The pool was always good, and the beaches picture perfect, especially Patara. Although all good things supposedly come to an end this ending was the beginning of new adventures. The adventures began before we had even actually left the villa. A bus / van for 7 persons and luggage had been ordered and a 7 - 9 passenger van showed up. They seemed to have forgotten the part about the luggage to go with the seven persons. Two bags in the back of the van and it was full. So the ... read more

Well Wednesday was supposed to be one of those kind of minimal tour activity days to just keep it simple and take it easy in Kalkan and around the villa. Nothing is ever quite as it appears though. The take it easy day was one of the rewards from all the effort that had gone into putting together plans for our last 10 days or so. Heather had spent pretty much a full afternoon on-line securing ferry reservations to Rhodes, our initial accommodations, and return flights to Istanbul for our last few days before flying home. Robbie Burns, the Scottish poet once wrote, “ The best laid plans gang aft a’glay” , which translates into contemporary English as something like ‘stuff happens’ and what happened was an email from the ferry booking agent. Nearing the end ... read more

Good Morning ! Well, it’s Tuesday morning here in Kalkan and most of you will be already sleeping of at least thinking of it. With a 10 hour time difference between here and home you could say we are pretty much half way round the world. Yesterday was pretty much a stay at the villa day. It was too hot for wandering about and anyways it was a busy “itinerary” day. At the end of this week our group of seven splits up. Some of us will be going on to Greece before flying back to Istanbul for a couple days before the long flight home to the rainy season. (and that’s beginning to sound like not a bad idea). Heather, Kane, Annie, and Lynn will be going onwards to Greece so there were ferry reservations ... read more

Well the girls are here for shopping and that’s what they did Wednesday. There are so many little shops and vendors tucked in all the alleyways of this small town. Actually I suppose Kalkan is more a big village than a small town, but lots of shops and tomorrow is Kalkan ‘market’ day. The girls have been talking of ‘market days’ since we got here and I suppose the excitement of it all, like little kids waiting for Christmas, is why the bus trip to the Kas market. Just can’t wait ! So while the girls shop, Al and I tag along. Who knows, we may be needed to pack and carry stuff. Of course if we do it will be all uphill ! Obviously there wasn’t expected to be too much shopping as we all ... read more

Well, after five days we have finally gained some internet access and will now be able to continue with hopefully some more regular postings. Trying to find free internet access has been really challenging. Even though lots of sites are located these Turkish folks seem to be very security-conscious as just about all the sites are security enabled. Those that aren’t are generally too weak to offer any sort of reliability,. The problem has been resolved however. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and do what you have to do so we bought an ‘internet stick’ from Turk Cell. Good for two months or 3 gigabytes, and probably whichever comes first so we might as well make it in gigabytes since we are only here for a month. I am sure that 3 gigabytes ... read more
