Cross a makeshift bridge that looks like something you’d only see in circus, climb mountains, explore caves, go swimming, rappelling and cliff diving. All in one day in one park! That’s what Biak-na-Bato National Park has to offer. A day full of adventure! Heard of this place a long time ago but only just found time to go when the Chinese new year was declared a holiday. Only two hours away from Manila. We rode a bus to Cabanatuan, got off at Camias in San Miguel, Bulacan. Rode a trike for about 20 minutes to Madlum and we were at the jump off point of the Biak Na Bato National Park. A park that I've only heard of when I got there. I only knew that there were mountains to hike and caves to explore in ... read more

I got the text message an hour too late. My group was leaving the following day and I was already on the bus to Lucban. But it turned out to be a blessing because I got to sleep that night unlike them who left at 1AM. I travelled for five hours to get to Lucban. The streets were narrow and the traffic was slow. I did eventually get there and I was picked up at 7/11 by Kenneth. A church mate/school mate whom I havent seen since 2002. 11 long years. He's a professional artist so I did expect it to be awkward not just because I havent seen him in 11 years. But because He is socially awkward like most artists that I know. He is cool though. I love artistic people. He paints, sings, ... read more

Seeing the traffic at 1AM made me want to head back home. It was pure chaos when I arrived at the bus station where my friends and I were to take the bus to Aurora, our chosen destination for this holy week. I had no idea that the bus stations were gonna be that busy on holy week! We waited in line for 3 hours before we got on the bus. It was crazy. We were carrying huge backpacks. At 3AM I was no longer lucid. Then finally after three long hours, we got on the bus. I immediately slept. Woke up at about 10AM before the stopover. The ride to Aurora showed me interesting landscapes. One that I particularly liked was the forest with leafless trees. It reminded me of N'Syncs music video for This ... read more

A strong seven foot wave wiped me out and brought me underwater. It dragged my surfboard closer to shore with me spinning and tumbling underwater behind it because my right ankle was tied to the surfboard by a rope that’s about 1.5 meters long. That happened a few times and I thought it was funny. It’s only now looking back that I realize how dangerous that was. I can swim but I’m not a strong swimmer. I’ve gone surfing before but that was in Zambales where the waves are not nearly as big and powerful as the ones in La Union. Maybe next time my friends and I should take turns so we can watch each others back. Laura and I were way too pre-occupied to watch each others back. Surfing takes so much effort. It’s ... read more

So I finally got to try break dance! I'm glad that the organizers decided to give time for this form of art in this years festival. I realized it's kinda like Yoga, in which I'm in intermediate level, but with different music and speed. I was in there with a bunch of high school kids so I felt like an uncle. The energy was great though! So much enthusiasm from those kids and some of them already knew how to break dance. At the end of the 30 minute workshop we formed a circle to show off what we've learned in the workshop. One of the instructors pushed me to the center, and well, I wanted to show off a little. I didn't get to do the "baby freeze" at the showdown though (nerves). But I ... read more

Rainy season is not the best time to travel in the Philippines. Let alone travelling in Banaue which is prone to landslides. But it was scheduled months ago and I don't know why they chose July, but it was dirt cheap at P2,000 for accomodation and transpo so I signed up because thats less than half the usual cost. There was a low pressure area when we left, which turned into a full blown typhoon by the time we got there. The bus going to Banaue was freezing cold! I've read a lot of blogs about how cold the buses to Banaue were but I understimated it so i had ten hours of torture. I wonder why they have to make it that cold. Is it because the drivers are used to the cool mountain weather ... read more

Then I heard him rolling down and Barbie screamed. "Oh my God! Renz!" I screamed back. There was a moments silence. I thought of how I can bring him back to town without a stretcher. What would his mother say to me? The one responsible for bringing her kids there. It was dark and we only had pen lights. Only three of us were hiking back to town. It was the dangerous part of the trek. The one where we had to climb big boulders one on top of the other. If you fall you're seriously injured, if not dead. Renz was pulling his sister up the rock. He wasn't sure footed so he got dragged down. Luckily his sister was holding his arm and managed to stop his fall. He seriously could have died. After ... read more

“O MY GOD O MY GOD O MY GOD!!!” I screamed like a girl and then all three of us turned back and scurried out of the cave faster than I could say “there’s a bat near my head and its making threatening noises and I think it’s going to attack me!” I just got back from trekking in Rizal province today. It was just a 45 minute trek but one of the most challenging and most fun treks I’ve ever done! The river was squeaky clean and we refilled our water bottles from one of the streams that contributes water to the big river. There were no impurities of any sort and I don’t feel my stomach grumbling until now! I loved the huge boulders in this river, and how clear the water on the ... read more

Sometimes when faced with big problems and major decisions to make, its nice to take a breather. Get away from it all to postpone the inevitable and think. So I went away to Bohol. Supposedly to think and meditate on the things that I'm going to lose and how to start all over again, but I was too busy to do that! But somehow its all clear now. Now I know what to do. We were picked up by the driver that we prearranged in Manila. Our plane arrived shortly after noon so we proceeded straight to the tour. We only planned to see three sites on day 1. Loboc river, Chocolate Hills and Tarsiers. The tour usually includes the hanging bridge, the oldest church in Bohol, the biggest Python in Bohol and some kind of ... read more

Halloween is a national holiday in the Philippines so my family decided to visit our summer home in Tagaytay city since its a long weekend. Tagaytay is about an hour and a half from Manila. Those who can afford a vacation house would usually buy here because of the cool weather. At least the weather used to be cool, now not so much but its still cooler and a lot less polluted than Manila. The weather wasn't good when we got there. It rained most of the time so we just stayed at home. Cooking, eating, sleeping. The wind was howling it's as if there was a storm. It was foggy and at times we couldn't see the neighbors. T'was kinda like a scene from a scary movie. I imagine it would have been awesome to ... read more
