It's been a while Travelblog! Since I last updated this I've done so much. I've settled in properly here at RPI and just about started my research properly; I've gotten myself a part time job on campus (as not to break immigration law); I've been to a drive in movie; and been to Baltimore for a weekend as well as spending quite a bit of time round at Sigma Phi Epsilon. So where to start? I went to the activity fair one day last week to have a look at all the different clubs and teams here at RPI, and there's a lot of them - presumably as a result of Troy being so small. I put my name down for Volleyball and Curling for some reason, neither of which I really meant to sign up ... read more

Photos, mostly of a few bits of the campus and a few of Albany! I'll get some more of Troy if I ever invest in a camera. Thanks to Steven for these pictures.... read more

So Saturday was our "welcome picnic" which was put on by a charity called Horizons who are based at one of the local churches. (Presbyterian maybe?) We had to get on yellow American school buses to get there which made me feel like I was going on a school trip. Even before we'd set off I'd met some more Danes as well as 4 or 5 Italians, a French guy and a couple from Columbia. There was basically a huge buffet at this place and each table had an American from the church sat with them which was good as we could ask about the local area etc. I sat with the English guys as well as John from Finland, Jeppe from Denmark, Fedrica and Nicole from Italy and an American doctor. I had about 5 ... read more

So, I've got two days worth of updating to do here. Thursday I started out by setting up a bank account at HSBC and then going to see my academic advisor about the courses I should be taking. We agreed on Medicinal Chemistry, NMR Spec and Computational Chemistry. Seeing how I had already done bits of the practical course before It was suggested that I go and see a Proff. Ferris about some UG research. The work he does is similar to what I missed out on doing in Leeds over the summ, er, he looks at the polymerisation of RNA oligimers (20 to 50 units) using various clays formed from volcanic ash all over the world as catalysts - which is all of importance as it is thought that before a DNA based world, RNA ... read more

For day 3 in New York I got up a bit later and got the L Train into Manhattan again and got off at Union Square to buy a SIM card for my phone. Having been initially baffled by the security guard and sign in desk in a mobile phone shop I ended up with a number on AT&T which is 917-969-1166, but it probably needs a US prefix for anyone to actually call me. I decided to walk up the east side of Manhattan that I hadn't previously seen - up Park Avenue which was ful of huge office buildings until I got to a McDonalds where I stopped for lunch just to see if it tasted the same as it did here... and it does. Tired of walking in the ridiculous heat I got ... read more

Woke up quite early yesterday (even for me) and got the subway into Manhattan whilst eating food I’d purchased in London and wasn’t really supposed to have brought into the country. I got off the train at 14th and 6th to do some sightseeing. Unfortunately I walked the wrong way for 20 minutes but did manage to see The First Presbyterian Church incase anyway cares. (I know I didn’t) When I eventually went the right way I walked most of midtown Manhattan up to the Empire State Building which was so big that I then had to walk back a few blocks to actually be able to see all of it at once. The roads in NYC are crazy - it’s all one way for the most part and because of the grid system cars can ... read more

Hello Travelblog! This is my second attempt at writing this as I think the laptop I have bought with me is even worse than mine. I’m in New York now, East Williamsburg to be precise at the New York Loft Hostel - It seems to be some old converted warehouses and is pretty nice but the air conditioning is very loud. My flight over was pretty good except coming down to land which was a bit like being on Oblivion at Alton Towers(Apparently there was a hurricane in Maine), I watched some IT Crowd as well as Wolverine on the plane, but was sat with businessmen who weren’t very friendly. When we arrived at Newark I had to wait almost an hour to get through immigration and I think the US government now have at least ... read more

HI. This is my new travel blog. It will tell you all about all of the amazing places I am going to go. I will update it as often as I can. I'm going to be studying Chemistry at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY for a year. I'm flying over on the 23rd from Heathrow to Newark and staying in New York City for 3 days, for which time I've booked a hostel in Brooklyn called The New York Loft Hostel. I need to buy a guide book as I don't know what I'm going to do yet. On the 26th I'm getting the Megabus to Albany, which is the biggest city near where I'm going and then catching a bus to Troy and then another to RPI. I'm staying in halls for the year in ... read more
