Geo: 43.8514, -69.6283We left Echo Lake early in the morning and drove to the Mount Washington Hotel. We asked the concierge there about hiking trails. We were going to hike to the top of Mt. Washington, but the weather called for dangerous storms and 40 mph winds. So, we did a 5 mile hike to the Arethusa Falls and Frankenstein Cliffs instead. I would say it was 150% humidity, but at least it was rather cool....and the sights were awesome. From there, we drove 2-1/2 hours to Boothbay Harbor, Maine. It is a cool town with a bunch of lobster boats and restaurants surrounding the harbor. We met some great locals; one who played for the Red Sox (and the Norfolk farm team) in the mid-90's and another who graduated from Radford in the late 60's.We stayed ... read more

Geo: 44.0915, -71.7023This is the 11th day of our trip. We have travelled through Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario, Vermont, and New Hampshire, and driven about 1,460 miles. This morning, we left Burlington, VT and drove by Shelburne Farms. Shelburne Farms was the winter retreat of the Webb/Vanderbilts. It is also still a working dairy farm. From there, we made the 2-1/2 hour drive to White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. After a 5:30 storm blew through, the temperature dropped and we had steaks on the grill and wine at camp.....ok, I had a steak; Sheila had grilled vegetables..... read more

Geo: 44.4758, -73.2132This morning we visited the ski jump and bobsled facilities at Lake Placid. It definitely gives you an appreciation for the guts that those athletes have when you are out on the jumps and tracks. From there, we headed to Burlington, Vermont. We crossed Lake Champlain on the ferry from Essex, NY to Charlotte, VT, and drove into Burlington. We stayed at a campground that is on Lake Champlain, and 2 miles from Burlington via bike path.We took the bike path to town this evening and got caught in a brief rainstorm. Had a great time meeting the locals at the marina bar, and dinner off of Church St. in the row of restaurants in downtown Burlington.... read more

Geo: 44.2794, -73.9803We rode our bikes to the Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort this morning, and took the gondola to the top of the slopes. This area is experiencing record high temperatures for this time of year, but the 85 degrees feels pretty good to us.We returned to the campground around 10:30 am and swam a little in the stream. After lunch, we took a cab into the Olympic Village at Lake Placid. We went to the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Ice Rinks. The "Miracle" Ice Rink still gets me. The guy working the desk at the museum was working concessions at the rink during the 1980 US/Russia game.We then hiked about 2 miles to the Lake Placid Lodge. Had some great drinks at the bar, and great conversation with the bar tender and other patrons.Great day. Heading ... read more

Geo: 44.2794, -73.9803We drove about 3-1/2 hours to Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain. We hung out around the campground and took a 3.5 mile hike. There is a whitewater stream behind the campground with rock cliffs lining the sides. There were many local kids diving off of the rocks into the pools of water. It is awesome. We walked to a restaurant right outside the campground, along the banks of the river. Great food and Lake Placid IPA. Tomorrow we will head into the Lake Placid Olympic Village, but from what we have seen so far, I can't image the world descending on this little town.... read more

Geo: 44.3358, -75.9181Woke up to another beautiful morning along the banks of Lake Ontario and took a 60 mile leisurely trip along the Seaway Trail. We stopped in Tibbetts Point Lighthouse at Cape Vincent, then went on to Alexandria Bay along the St. Lawrence River. We did the 1 hour tourist boat ride to Boldt Castle and "Millionaires Row" to see the insane houses on the private islands. Our campground was really nice, right on the bank of the St. Lawrence River. There was no electric or water hookup at the sites, but we can "rough it" for 1 night. We rode our bikes into the harbor from the campground and locked them up at the dock. When we returned, we could not open the combination lock; something obviously got hosed. So, I asked a cop if he ... read more

Geo: 43.8868, -76.2238We drove about 250 miles from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario to Henderson Harbour, NY. It took about 45 minutes to get through customs leaving Canada. The US customs people are a lot more thorough than the Canadians; they came in the RV and searched the refrigerator and opened doors. We thought we were staying closer to the heart of 1000 Islands when we made reservations, but this is an island on the fringe. We will likely stay closer to Boldt Castle tomorrow.... read more

Geo: 43.2553, -79.0721....after leaving Niagara Falls, we headed across the bridge into Canada. I did not know what to expect trying to get through customs driving an RV, but no problems. We arrived at the Shaw Club Hotel & Spa around 11:00, and was able to squeeze the RV in their parking lot. From there, we headed by bike for about an 8 mile ride to various wineries.Great weather and nice combination of exercise and wine tasting....perfect birthday for Sheila!... read more
