Back home in Nanjing! Asia » China » Jiangsu » Nanjing
Here’s two days wrapped in one. Thanksgiving we were quite busy, nonstop actually, which we should be accustomed to now, but sometimes you forget I guess. The morning started out touring. We were all kind of grumbling going there because we just wanted some time to ourselves…then we got there, and it was amazing. I don’t know the name of it in Chinese or English, but it was really neat! We went past a fountain, in some sense kind be likened to the Bellagio Hotel in Vegas. They have music and fountain going. Then at the end you drink the water [View Full Entry]

Lost In Translation Asia » China » Jiangsu » Wuxi
Whoa, what a day. I think the title says it all…Lost in translation. I know for myself, some of the science words are not typically words that English learners would learn—fulcrum, mechanical advantage, efficiency. So, I had to give my lesson today, and many of these words were lost (or some I’m told). It certainly was interesting. When I went to give my lesson, about 2-3 minutes into it, some big booms started going, and not just one or two. A couple dozen or more! I definitely jumped and stopped. I didn’t know what was happening. Should I be concerned? The [View Full Entry]

Rowdy Students
It's all about looks

The morning started off with us (Andrea and I) discussing with 3-9th grades students (2 girls, 1 boy; all 16 years old) about their lives. Very fascinating stuff! It could have be a typical middle class student in the US. We asked if they had cell phones—yep, 2/3 did. They have been to Disneyland (in Hong Kong); they had teddy bears; they like to hang out with their friends. Favorite activities included: watching TV (only on the weekends), having soda (every night!), instant messaging (the boy had a “long-distance” girlfriend from another city), and going shopping. Inquiry in the Lecture Hall

I’m not sure where to begin; today was just so jam packed with stuff! I will try to make it as coherent as possible, but it will most likely be a very non-linear path I will take. Just a quick story on breakfast to start. I went over the carb area, grabbed a sweet roll and headed back to the table. At first I thought the topping was cinnamon, which I thought this is perfect, sweet roll and cinnamon: breakfast of champions! Then upon closer inspection I thought the cinnamon looked a little funny. I asked Ming what it was, and [View Full Entry]

First Full Day! Asia » China » Jiangsu » Nanjing
So here I am off in Nanjing. We got in last night, about 9 pm (their time) on Saturday. It was good to see all everyone. Flights and travel was uneventful--just how I like it! The only challenge was in Beijing, I had to transfer to get on a local flight all by myself! I just about messed this up in Denver, so I was a little timid. I asked the shuttle bus guy, "To China South (my airline--fairly well known)." He said "Two." Hmmm..."China South?" "Two." I was getting nowhere, so I got on--I would be going somewhere. Ten minutes [View Full Entry]
