Jo and Lauren

Lauren and I are about to embark on a six week trip to Mexico. We have been housemates in Tamworth for a year, and now we will test the friendship further with the trip of a lifetime. We will spend our first 4 weeks in Mexico City with a host family, and attend Universidad La Salle, to complete a course " Health care in developing countries". We will then spend the last 2 weeks backpacking and visiting other towns including the city of Oaxaca, Puerto Escondidas and finally finishing off with time on the beach in Acapulco. We are both very Excited!

So, here we are back in Australia. We landed in Sydney Airport at 8:30 this morning. Jo has already been picked up by her uncle and I am waiting for my sister to finish class so she can come and get me. I just tried to contact her to let her know where I am, but my phone does not have service and the free airport WiFi is not working on either my phone or computer. I also have no Australian change (no money at all really!) to make a phone call from a public phone. Hopefully she will find me here! Our last few nights in Mexico were nice, but passed way too quickly. After I last blogged, we went out for dinner at a restaurant in the Oaxaca Zocolo called La Casa de la ... read more

My watch has stopped. Grrr. Our tour on Wednesday was a short one which took us on a boat through the Canyon del Sumidero . We saw amazing rock and moss structures, spider monkeys and a crocodile. Jo does not believe that the crocodile was real ("it didn't even move! And how did the boat driver know where it would be?"). We then visited the town of Chiapa de Corzo where we had free time. This place was really quaint and quite old school. We accidentally went the 'wrong' way and ended up in these little side streets rather than the markets where us tourists were meant to go, but we really enjoyed a bit of non-touristy strolling. We tried to buy a bag of mango (10 pesos for about 2 mangoes already chopped and ready ... read more

And so began the next part of our adventure, on our own in mexico.... or not quite. On Sunday we caught a plane Tuxtla Guiterezz in Chiapis, a southern state of mexico. That morning Ale, rang her family in another town, San Cristobal, to ask about reccomending accomodation, and they kindly offered to have us stay for 4 nights. The grandparents and their daughter Rosio, all spoke limited English, however Rosio's daughter Kaori speaks very good english, and helped us with many translations. Beside the language differences, the family took us under there wing, and we will definitely come b ack to visit one day. Rosio and Kaori took us on tours of the town, which is very old and beautiful, booked us into tours, and made sure we has eaten all the food items written ... read more

Hi Everyone! We are back! Time seems to have slipped away and our trip is coming to an end. Difficult to remember where we left off, as we have had a hectic couple of weeks, finishing our health care course, and heading off to explore mexico on our own. Limited internet access has also been a problem. Our last week at the university was busy, as we were completing a assignment on diabetes throughout mexico. We did manage to pull of an interesting (and rather long) presentation on the thursday (3/2). After that, we found ourselves busy with packing, organising, shopping, and saying a lot of goodbyes (especially to ayen and clare). We did manage to fit in that week a night out for salsa dancing, participated in by lauren only, who joined in a salsa ... read more

We are both a bit surprised at how fast this half way point of our trip has snuck up on us. I love that after three weeks in Mexico City we are still being surprised by so many things everyday. On Wednesday we only had a half day at La Salle so we were able to come home for lunch. Lunch at home is always fun as Ale's friends never cease to entertain us...usually in Spanish, but we get the drift of the conversation (and whatever we completely miss, Ale translates for us!). On Wednesday night we had the option to go to the Ballet Folklório...a Mexican 'ballet' that the four of us chose to attend. It was held at the Museum of Anthropology in an outdoor area, so it was a touch chilly, but so ... read more

Lauren and i have just spent an intensive afternoon on our diabetes in mexico healthcare assignments. Thought it might be time to take a break and blog. We left of at sunday afternoon... after an amazing 4hr nap we headed to get dinner at a tacos joint down the road named Paco's Taco's. Ale took us as we were somewhat inexperienced in ordering in spanish and this joint appears to be a family favourite. It was AMAZING!! Its a small shop front only opened of a night time with a few stools around the walls. On the pavement, the owners have set up a large hotplate with a bench and some stools. We took a seat at the hotplate, adding to the experience as we were able to watch Paco make the different dishes. Paco has ... read more

So it turned out that our visit to Huixquilucan was more about politics than anything else. The locals all clapped and shouted as the mayor carried a baby through the crowds to cut a big red ribbon, surrounded by Australian health students in lab coats in order to open the 'health fair'. We were then told to help out at the various stands providing health care to the people, such as vaccinations, dental checks and balloon animals (?). Jo and I were assigned to the nutrition stand...but as we speak very little Spanish, we ended up just eating (healthy) tacos. It was all a little too politically fanciful for me, but Jo enjoyed the day. Apparently we were on the local news that night...announced as 20 Australian doctors helping out at Huixquilucan for two weeks. Which ... read more

I am writing this from an outer suburb of mexico city state called huixquilucan. Were not quite sure why we are her yet but there appears to be a health expo on which we shall help with. These computers have been donated for the day by carlos slim. The richest man in the world. Huixiclucan houses some of the poorer mexican community who have relocated from other mexican states for work. We have spent the last few days visiting some of mexicos private hospitals and having conferences on diabetes and obesity in mexico. These hospitals are reaally fancy and look more like hotel rooms then hospitals. Apparently though, the average wage of a nurse at the private hospitals is half that of those at the public. On Monday and tuesday we had a large break for ... read more

Night 1. Thursday Tonight was our first night out in Mexico City. Invited by Luis, we headed into town with Clare, Ayen, most of our housemates and a variety of Luis' friends to listen to some DJs at a small club. We both had our first Mexican tequila here (my first tequila ever)...I didn't mind it, but Jo said it was "as bad as Australian tequila". I think our Mexican hosts were quite offended by this. We thought the dress code for ladies was a bit of a curiosity...jeans, boots, jackets and scarves were in, while dresses (like what we had) were out. Using the international language of dance we communicated well with our new Mexican friends (we introduced them to a very nifty move called the surfboard) including our housemate, Hammunrabi, who speaks no english. ... read more

Right now i am full of icecream. Us girls sussed out the surrounding area and found an ice creamery thisafternoon. It was an interesting experience... especially with little spanish under our belts. I think the teeneagers working at the icecreamery found us quite amusing watching us try to order... and the first one went behind the counter to giggle at our attempts to communicate instead of serving us. It was delicious anyhow... we tried Lemon and cream, coffee, banana and pistachio! While we were sitting in the icecreamery a little girl of about 5 came up to us... did not say anything... and pulled the most adorable sad eyes face. It took us a while to figure out what she wanted. First we tried a few of our badly constucted spanish sentences ( How are you?, ... read more
