Venice The next day we were off to Venice. The drive through the Austrian Alps was spectacular. Lots os autobahns and lots of tunnels - longest was around 3.1km. Lots of bridges as well. The countryside flattened out as we entered Italy but it was still very pretty. Each day we stop at least three times for a comfort stop. I am still amazed at the need to pay to have a wee. Some of the stops have beautiful clean facilities but others are less than desireable. As we neared Venice we struck a very large traffic jam coming up to a tollway - it took us 45 minutes to get through. Cars going all ways but no visible aggression. Upon reaching Venice we transferred to a Gondola for a short ride. I think that the ... read more

Week 5 European Tour - Part 1 Well here is the latest update. It is now Sunday 7th September - Fathers Day - and we are back in London. We are both very glad that our travel agent advised us to take a tour that was at a leisurely pace. We are exhausted after starting every day at 6:30am and not getting to our hotel until 9:00pm. I would hate to go on a tour that was listed as lively. Just a few quite words about our stops on our European bus tour that took 15 days. Amsterdam Early start from London - 4:00am wakeup. On the bus to Dover, across the channel and then on to our bus with our Slovenian driver Daniel and off to Amsterdam. The country side is fairly flat and unintetesting. In ... read more

Week 4 - Devon and London We had a wonderful week with Karen's cousin Dee and Jim. Their hospitality has been fantastic and we will both have many enduring memories of our time in Devon in spite of the weather. The whole area fascinated me. From the narrow windy lanes that run between the villages to the extremely old and varied architecture. We even managed to see where Karen's parents first met! Managed to have dinner wiith Auntie Joy and Uncle Marwood at their home - I admired Marwoods garden - he takes such pride in it. We spent a very long day travelling with Jim and Dee down to Plymouth. Visited the Hoe (promenade) and then The Barbican were the Mayflower left in 1620 to sail to the Americas. I also found out that Captain ... read more

Edinburgh Well, here we are in Edinburgh. The Ramada Jarvis hotel was very comfortable and the food was good. I had a laugh to see that we had a downstairs room and most of the oldies had an upstairs room. That was OK but there was no lift in the hotel. We had a good walk around the local shopping centre. Did not buy a thing! The bus took us into Edinburgh around 3pm and we had a couple of hours walking around the town. The streets were extremely narrow and busy - lots of tourists visiting for the Tattoo and the Fringe. Saw quite a number of street performers. The Tattoo was FANTASTIC! Very well organised, the crowd moved well, the security checks were fast and thorough. The walk up the Royal Mile to the ... read more

Week 2 This is the end of our second week away from home. After arriving at Rhyl and being met by Kath, we were off to Abergele. I cannot get over the narrow streets and the amount of traffic they carry. In some places there is hardly room for two cars to pass each other and the smooth flow is only achieved by courteous and patient drivers. Kath and Karen spend a great deal of time catching up. I spent a great deal of time listening! We had hardly arrived at Kath’s home when we were off to their caravan. (actually more like a transportable home) in Pwllheli. On the way we stopped at a very large Tesco shop where they sold just about everything. A combined supermarket and variety store. They even had a bottle ... read more

Well, here we at last. The end of our first week in the United Kingdom! The flight from Adelaide via Melbourne to Tokyo was Ok and we did not experience any problems except for a short delay to our Adelaide departure due to ice on the wings. Tokyo (Narita) was very hot and extremely humid. We did enjoy our overnight stay. Next morning went straight to the British Airways lounge for plenty of food and booze. London flight was good - first time on a Jumbo for me. The hotel in London was small as was the room, but who needs a big room when you are out and about each day. Spent a good deal of time walking around London although we did use the Hop On Hop Off bus. Lots and lots of bloody ... read more
