After packing up at our farm stay, we drove south through to Wallabadah along the New England Highway, turning right and driving through the town of Quirindi. As we exited Quirindi we passed a couple of horse and sulkies heading into town, which was a bit of a blast from the past. My blacksmithing grandfather and father made and repaired sulkies and carts in our family Blacksmith Shop. I didn’t think anything more of this coincidental meeting until I reached Wellington and did more extensive research on the Cullen genealogy. We stopped in Dunedoo for lunch, and followed the GPS to take the Comobella Road to Wellington. Unfortunately the Comobella Bridge had been damaged in the recent floods, and was impassable, leaving us with a long detour via Wongarbon. This long detour did however, take us ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Tamworth November 25th 2022

The Waterfall Way runs from Coffs Harbour to Armidale, and guess what. There are lots of waterfalls to view along the way. We explored the key waterfalls in the Dorrigo area, and now headed further up onto the New England plateau, aiming to stay in Tamworth. First stop was Ebor Falls, followed by Wollomombi Falls, both relatively quick stopovers. We also passed Thunderbolts Rock near Uralla, which was a famous lookout post for bushranger Captain Thunderbolt, who was partial to robbing the mail coaches as they passed by. Thunderbolt had escaped from the notorious Cockatoo Island prison, and he wasn't planning on going back there in a hurry. He was eventually shot by an off duty policeman, who had shot his horse from under him. We stopped off for lunch in Armidale, and were impressed with ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Dorrigo November 22nd 2022

We had been planning to head further down the coast, however, due to expected windy weather on the coast, we decided to tackle Dorrigo Mountain, and head along the Waterfall Way. We were a bit unsure about towing a caravan up the steep mountain range, but we figured we had a new car and the caravan is not overly long or heavy, so off we went. It was a steep pull up the narrow mountain road, passing first through Bellingen again. It wasn’t long though before we arrived at Dorrigo Mountain Tourist Park, where we set up. After lunch, we drove around the town and headed out to Dangars Falls, which were quite impressive from the lookout. We decided to walk down the gorge to the foot of the waterfall to get a better view, taking ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sawtell November 20th 2022

Staying on the Coffs Coast was an opportunity to revisit some of the places where we had enjoyed family holidays down through the years. It was also an opportunity to explore some family history. The family history exploration unfolded into a personal episode from the SBS series of Who Do You Think You Are. We randomly chose to stay at Sawtell Caravan Park, where we discovered on arrival, the Sawtell Historical Society office attached to the Park Office. After noting that the Historical Society was open the next day, we took a drive around Sawtell and Coffs Harbour to check out the beaches, creeks and ocean baths, as we were eager to get in the water. We were a bit nervous about swimming in the ocean in the Ballina area. First stop the next day was ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Ballina November 13th 2022

It was time to leave the Sunshine State and return to our native state of NSW. As we crossed the border at Coolangatta, no more manual adjusting of the clocks, no more fading of the curtains, the mobile phones and car GPS altered the time automatically, losing an hour in the process. Visiting Ballina was an opportunity to catch up with our former neighbours at Kariong, Kim and Kayleen Bourke, who now reside there. Kim and Kayleen were great friends and mentors for us, being a young couple living a long distance away from our families, with our kids growing up together and attending the same preschool and school. We spent a great day catching up with them, the day passing all too quick, recalling memories, events and getting updates on other former Kariong residents that ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Gold Coast November 9th 2022

Normally a visit to the Gold Coast translates to visiting the many theme parks, swimming at the world famous beaches or shopping at the vast array of malls. This Gold Coast stopover, however, was primarily about visiting Kim’s nephew Adam, who has recently been diagnosed with another brain tumour, having spent the last three years undergoing chemo and radiation in order to successfully eliminate his initial brain tumour. We wanted to encourage and support him as he commences treatment this week. After visiting and staying overnight with Adam’s sister, Melissa, and her family, we travelled to Yarrabilba and spent the morning with Adam and his wife Trish. Phone messaging is no substitute for face to face catch up. After visiting Adam, it was a short drive to Tamborine Mountain, which lies just west of and above ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Redcliffe November 4th 2022

We needed to stop off near Brisbane in order to fulfil a promise made to my Mum to visit old family friends, Hazel and Lyle Morris. Not wanting to stay close to the city and it’s snaking brown river, we found a Church Convention Centre at Dakabin (near Pine Rivers) which could accommodate our caravan on a powered site. On arrival we noticed there was a school attached to the Watson Park Convention Centre, being Northpine Christian College. As it turned out, Melissa Pratt, whom we had known from a young child, was currently teaching at the school, and we caught up for a long chat late one afternoon after school. We visited the North Lakes Town Park and walked around the man made lake full of turtles, birdlife and countless water dragons, sunning themselves along ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Maroochydore October 31st 2022

The Sunshine Coast (aka Sunny Coast) definitely lived up to its name during our stay at Maroochydore Beach Holiday Park, located right on the main beach. The weather was perfect for a beach holiday. The marketing slogan sure hit the nail on the head in stating “Queensland is beautiful one day. Perfect the next”. Maroochydore lies at the centre of the Sunshine Coast, with Noosa at the northern tip, and Caloundra at the southern tip. We wanted to visit Maroochydore as it was one of the destinations where we stayed on our honeymoon forty years ago. Our first port of call was the Eumundi Markets, which are purported to be Australia’s biggest and best Artisan markets, and they really did live up to their reputation. The stallholders are actively encouraged to “make it, bake it, sew ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Tin Can Bay October 27th 2022

After delaying our visit to Tin Can Bay due to severe storms in the area, we finally packed up at Hervey Bay, and headed south. The weather was stifling on arriving at the Tin Can Bay Tourist Park, and after setting up our caravan, we headed for a cool swim in the park pool. We were up early next morning to visit the Barnacle Dolphin Centre located at the Tin Can Bay Marina. Volunteers run the dolphin feeding, and for $10 each, you get to see the dolphins come near the boat ramp, hear a good deal of information about the dolphins and to get in the water and feed the dolphins. The dolphins are Australian Humpback Dolphins, and there are only about 1,000 of these type left. How they started coming in for feeding at ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Hervey Bay October 24th 2022

Throughout our six month caravan odyssey, we have clearly been looked after. Despite the weather having smashed Eastern Australia this year, we have only experienced around one week of rain in total, none of it torrential, even though places we have just been to or places we were planning to travel to have received significant rain totals, high winds and large hail stones. An example is the rainfall total for nearby Tin Can Bay for the last week has been 368 mm. We were originally planning to stay at a farm outside of Maryborough for a few days, however, the rain forecasts made it unwise to proceed with this plan. We changed our destination to Hervey Bay for three nights. On our way to Hervey Bay, we stopped off in Childers for lunch and a coffee, ... read more
