After leaving Lac Leman we drove along the north edge of the lake heading for Chateau de Chillon. The journey was uneventful and we arrived just after lunch and ate at a convenient MacDonalds. Not my favourite choice for eating but it was all that we could find. The chateau is spectacular, an architectural gem set on the edge of the lake and within sight of the Alps. It is the most visited historical monument in Switzerland and it wasnt hard to see why today. The castle and the area around it was full of visitors many Japanese. It is very difficult to think of adjectives to describe this castle built in 1005 - pretty, charming, interesting - the list goes on and on. One can almost imagine Guinevere, King Arthur and Lancelot being inhabitants of ... read more

Why did we end up in the south east of France and then decided that we would drive right across the border into Switzerland. The Schengen agreement has made it easier to cross borders without the need to queue at the guard posts waiting for passports to be checked. With vignette fitted to the windscreen we headed out towards the mountains heading for Switzerland. It took some time to traverse the mountains, the roads wound up and back down into valleys taking what seemed like an age. We passed signs to Chambery and Albertville and snow started to build up on the mountaintops. All men of a certain age will have worked out by now why we were heading to Geneva to see the lake and the famous Jet d'Eau. Switzerland is one of the those places ... read more

Europe » France » Burgundy » Beaune May 19th 2006

Holidays are here again and it’s France this time. We had booked a rather strange one – 1 week in a chalet in Annecy and the other week would be spent in Brittany visiting friends who ran a bed and breakfast just outside Dinan. Our half way stop along the way was going to be Beaune a beautiful Burgundian town with the famous Hotel Dieu and the multi coloured roofs of red, brown, yellow and green. Our journey was uneventful as the car swallowed up the French motorway miles. Just like the M6 when it was first opened. We arrived later in the afternoon and were staying in a Campanile just outside of the town. By the time we arrived the visitors had thinned out and we found a peaceful oasis of calm. How can you ... read more

On our way home - not happy but unfortunately the time does come round and you have to bite the bullet and accept you can do nothing about it. The weather back home was dull and miserable and I knew I would miss the French weather and the way of life that went with it. I would have to resort to Tesco french baguettes and croissants to remind me of a way of life I love and wish I could take more of it in. Work gets in the way of travel unless you are very rich or don't give a damn and throw caution to the wind and set off into the sunset. Perhaps retirement when it comes will give us the opportunity of our missed gap year. We booked a hotel close to Fontainebleu ... read more

Morning broke as it always does in France, bright clear and quiet. We were on our way home and work was beckoning next week. We work early and ate our breakfast in the local Campanile pondering on what we planned to do over the next few days. We were trying to make the most of what was left of our short break before returning to the toil and hinderence of work. There was so much to see and sometimes it is hard to make a decision. Much depends on taste and time. It is easy to fill a fortnight up with places to see and things to do and then to realise there is so much more left that you could have taken the time to see. . We knew we were going to drive up ... read more

Europe » France » Upper Normandy » Rouen June 14th 2005

We left our friends Sam and Roy after spending a few relaxing days with them. What a life waking up late, listening to the cocks crowing in the farm down the road. Cock a reeko apparently is the sound they make not cock a doodle doo. We enjoyed walking the dogs in the fields near the house and sitting in the evenings under the bamboo shade watching the sun setting. How jealous I felt with their life style - for us just two weeks before going back to Glenn and his kitchen fitting and me the jobcentre. We set off for the Chateau de Josselin which stands in south Brittany on the river Oust. It is still the home of the original family. It has three majestic towers which overlook the river. I though the view ... read more

We hadnt been on holiday for quite some time - 2001 to be exact and our holiday to the USA. What had happened in between was house hunting and house moving which got in the way on holidaying. We moved into our new house in 2001 just before we flew to Chicago and whilst the house seemed a good idea at the time gradually we began to realise it just wasnt what we wanted or needed. For a start we had two cars and a van. The house only had a small garage and drive and this meant that the van had to sit across the road which was hardly convenient. The estate seemed fairly quiet to begin with but gradually more and more houses were being built and with this more and more families moved ... read more

North America » United States » Illinois » Galena June 18th 2001

Our holiday was coming to an end - only another three days and we would be back on the plane heading home for home and work .We were not looking forward to our flight which was set for 6.30 in the evening. I dont like flying at night and although you can go to sleep I dreaded the long night with no view from the windows. We hoped to enjoy our last few days and travelled via Galena a small town in Illinois to Chicago where we intended spending a few days sightseeing again and having a last few days with our relatives.. Galena is known for its history and its association with the war general Ulysses S Grant. Once one of the most important cities in the state, Galena was the hub on the Mississippi ... read more

North America » United States » Iowa » Dubuque June 15th 2001

We left Indianapolis and had to decide where to go to next. We had a few days to fill before we drove back to Chicago to meet up with relatives again. We had ideas that we would like to see Oklahoma and Texas but felt we didnt have enough time to do both of them so instead we headed north to Dubuque in Iowa. Dubuque is located along the Mississippi River, not quite as wide as it is in St Louis nor was it quite so muddy. The city lies at the junction of three states of Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. It is one of the few cities with hills in Iowa. We noticed a difference in countryside. Gone were the flat cereal growing farmlands and were replaced by mile upon mile of green meadows, Dutch ... read more

North America » United States » Indiana » Indianapolis June 7th 2001

Leaving our hotel we headed off for our 4th state Indiana - a Bible state. We had intended to visit more relatives and began to wonder if that was really a good idea but at this stage we couldnt change our plans. We drove towards Indianapolis through more and more dull and disinteresting scenery. On the way we thought we needed to stop for a coffee to break our journey. We saw what looked like a nice 50' s style diner and parked the car. Inside the tables were spread out and laid neatly with red and white gingham tableclothes. The waitress behind the counter was polite and friendly and we ordered a couple of coffees and found a quiet table in the corner. What is it about being in a foreign country that makes you ... read more
