The weather was going to be cloudy with a chance of rain so we decided to take a drive to see some of the sites in Normandy. Our first stop was in Honfluer above the town to see Cotes de Grace. This site provides a beautiful view of Honfluer below and the Normandy Bridge. There is a tiny chapel built in the 1600’s by mariners and the people of Honfluer – Chapel of Notre-Dame de Grace. Outside the chapel is a wooden structure supporting approximately 30 stainless steel bells. The bells went of every 15 minutes. Nice and peaceful here but it is time to move on. We then headed west along the coast to visit Trouville and Deauville. Both towns are close and separated only by a small river. Trouville is a beach town and ... read more

The Air France flight from SFO was non-stop and for the most part uneventful. Two and one half hours into the flight a crewmember made an announcement asking if there was a doctor on board. One of the passengers became ill but as far as we know she was OK by the time we got to Paris. They seem to enjoy serving alcohol. The menu had champagne as an aperitif. After dinner was served the flight attendant came by asking everyone if they wanted cognac. Arriving at Charles De Gaul airport is where our first adventure began. Since this was our first time at the airport it was all new to us. From the time we arrived at the gate to pick up our baggage took at least an hour. Once we got our baggage it ... read more

With just 5 days to go before our next adventure the anticipation of our upcoming trip is growing. With that said we are not ready yet as too many other fun stuff has gotten in the way of our being fully prepared. We still have a few days to pack and make sure all of our arrangements are set. So join us again as we set off on another adventure to seek out good food, beer, wine, and places to visit in France and Belgium. Jim & Lisa... read more

Day 25 Monday November 21, 2011 - Auckland Since we had only one full day in Auckland we decided to get up earlier than usual start to take in some of the local sights. We headed for the Skytower, which claims to be the tallest building in the southern hemisphere where we were hoping to have breakfast in one of the two restaurants. Using the term building is a stretch as it is similar to the Seattle space needle as the Skytower is a large spire in the middle of downtown Auckland. We paid the $28 per person fee to get access to two viewing platforms within the tower and took the elevator to the first platform, which is 610 feet high. We are notified that the restaurants are not yet open but there is a ... read more

Friday November 18, Rotorua For the first time during our trip we both had plans to do something different. Jim made arrangements to go fly fishing with a guide for the day and Lisa was planning to spend the day at the villa for an in-room spa day, relaxing and reading a good book. Jim booked the day with John Hamill who is a local guide who knows the local streams, rivers, and lakes when it comes to trout fishing. Jim gets picked up around 8:30 AM and travels about 1.5 hours to the Waitahanui river. Trout fishing in New Zealand is world famous for big fish so Jim is looking forward to landing the big one. After arriving at the river Jim and the guide gear up with waders, fly rods, and other gear and ... read more

Wednesday, November 16, 2011 Jim wanted to leave Wellington by 9:00 since we have at least 6 hours on the road today. We settle into the car but we aren't going anywhere. The battery is dead. Jim checks in with the office to see if someone can give us a jump. The woman in the office instructs Jim to go to the mechanics shop across the street, ask for Darryl, and let him know he was sent there by the staff from Victoria Lodge and that he needed help. It was raining so Jim quickly navigated traffic to cross the road. Inside the shop Darryl was working on a car and asked how he could help. Without a question he offered a small battery pack to jump the car and Jim was on his way. Within ... read more

Monday November 14, 2011 Today we took the ferry from the South Island to the North Island. We heard a gentleman explaining that the ferry were on is the largest ferry in the fleet. Getting on the ferry was somewhat painless. We parked our car in the a ramp leading up to the deck where cars are parked. Once filled the ramp we parked on is raised up so more cars can be parked under the raised ramp. Once we get to the passenger decks, there are plenty of places to sit and relax. The ferry has nice reclining seats with plenty of legroom. The journey takes 3 1/2 hours and passes though Cook Straight between the north and south islands. The water was fairly calm so the ride was not rough at all. We walked ... read more

Saturday November 12, 2011 - Day 17 Our plan for the day was to drive to the town of Nelson for the day to see the sights and seek out a couple of breweries and the hop fields. As we left Blenheim Lisa calmly reminded Jim that we are supposed to drive on the left. After he exited the right hand lane and returned to the left hand lane, he gave Lisa the official job of reminding him of this information throughout the rest of the trip. The road was fairly straight and we passed about another 1,000 sheep in multiple pastures. Along the way we passed through a few small towns and remembered that one of the locals told us there are no stop lights in Blenheim and through the country side all we came ... read more

Thursday November 10, 2011 - Day 15 We woke up in Hanmer Springs around 9:00 AM after about six hours of sleep. We could finally see our surroundings and it was amazing. Hammer Springs is a small town located in an alpine area with mountains covered with snow and lots of green. The town is known for hot spring pools to soak in. Our plan for the day was to drive back into Christchurch for some site seeing. We met Shane the owner of the property and he gave some ideas on what to see. There is only one road up and own the east coast so after leaving the mountain area, (where we saw hundreds if not thousands of sheep, bunnies, and other wildlife), we headed south on highway 1. It was getting close to ... read more

Tuesday, November 8, 2011 - Day 13 Jim checks online to ensure we have everything we need for our flight out tomorrow morning and we arrange for a taxi to pick us up at 5:00 am the next morning. Adelaide has a central market similar to other big cities where local produce, meat, cheese, and other wares are sold . Central Market in Adelaide was no exception as it too had a wonderful selection to choose from, including small cafes to get a bite to eat. We ate our way through the marketplace including fresh baked bread, pastries both savory and sweet. This market also has many stores attached to the facility and we ended up in Chinatown. This was the only place we found cheap eats in Adelaide. Jim has commented that there has been ... read more
