Firstly - apologies for the late publication - have both been very slack in keeping the blog up to date... Anyway, cast your mind back to December as I describe Siem Reap... Talking Temples on Tuk Tuk By Sir Ewan Tuktuk and Lady Wanna Koldrin OK - the thing to do in Siem Reap is tour the temples. Ankor Wat is simply the beginning of this. Because of the presence of the temples, Siem Reap is heavily touristed, to the point where Jane and I started having identity problems (hence the byline). Eventually we realised I was being offered a form of transport and Jane was constantly being offered a refreshing beverage. An improvement of sorts on Battambang where she was told she was beautiful because she had such a long nose (I guess it is ... read more

Ok - this is the draft of what will be a pretty long entry - done so much stuff in 3 days - will add more photo's to this blog as i find a place with better internet Phnom Penh in 12 Hours We fly in to PP via our cheap Air Asia flight from KL - think easyjet and you will be in pretty much the same place. The arrivals hall was interesting - a large number of uniformed police, who initially looked pretty scary, but were really just part of the initial plan to fleece tourists, being that all foreign nationals have to spend about US$20 to get a visa. This process was slightly delayed by us not having a passport size photo - I say slightly because it just cost us an extra ... read more

Escape from Harborne Hall Flew out from Heathrow to Singapore, after a brief week long return to England so we could attend a whole week long course of VSO training. Not sure the training was really designed with medics in mind, but hey, at least I will now be a dab hand with coloured pens and flip charts, to help me facilitate small groups in a participatory fasion (you had to be there - well, WE had to be there at least...) Long flight - you always forget just how crap you will feel after 14 hours in an economy class seat, even with the wonderful Singapore Airlines crew looking after you. Made landfall in Singapore (which I (Jason) must have last visited for more than a couple of hours in transit over 15 years ago) ... read more

Essquibo week-end When we got back into town from the Rupununi we had a day in GT then headed off with Tors and some other GT possee to a beautiful house that we rented just near Bartica… This time there were enough of us to rent almost the whole speedboat for our group alone, meaning we were really riding in style. The house was a fantastic throwback to the days of empire, with bougainvillea along the balconies and a pool. The pictures kinda speak for themselves. We had a really relaxing week-end and shared Katherine’s Birthday. Time was spent in a very pleasant cycle of swimming in the pool followed by eating large meals. I have to say having only been out of the UK for 3 weeks we were still fairly impressed by the amount ... read more

Guyana - To The Interior After what seemed like ages of trying to find a way into the interior of Guyana, we finally gave up planning and just found an aeroplane going vaguely in our direction and jumped on it. Just before we left we emailed our potential host, at a place called Caiman House, who confirmed she had space for us, and so off we went. We hit the local (interior flights) airport, called Ogle. After being weighed (you know you’re going on a small plane when each kg counts) we were sent to immigration. Immigration was staffed by five people whose job description seemed to be “sit around, watch bad local soaps on TV, look menacing and get tourists to write their name in the book after scrutinising their passports”. After duly writing our ... read more

Guyana Arrived off the plane to be greeted by Tors (which did give a certain amount of amusement value as the faces of the awaiting taxi drivers fell as we were efficiently whisked off to the awaiting wheels ) and headed off to her house in Duncan Street, Georgetown. Lovely place with big open plan downstairs with kitchen/dinner and then two/three bedrooms upstairs with a balcony, with all mod cons including A/C and running water! It’s only major downside is it’s proximity to the Christian Mission which is directly opposite, and practices extremely loud praising and worshipping four days a week, with a minister with a loud-haler and full karaoke facilities. Sunday morning lie ins are not an option. Around Georgetown First impressions - Guyana was a lot more developed than either of us had expected. ... read more

We're Leaving on a Jet Plane Finally, we’ve managed to pack up and rent out the house, as well as (hopefully) tying up all our other UK bound affairs. Over a month was spent in ferrying our various belongings to locations scattered across the UK, from Shropshire to Derby, Canterbury to Yorkshire, and a couple of motherloads in Poole and London. The odds of us ever finding it all again in a couple of year’s time seem remote. Huge thanks to all those who offered storage. We promise one day to clear your Basements / Garages / Lofts. We Are Going to Barbados Finally got to take Jane off on honeymoon. After an early morning drop off at Gatwick (thanks again Trina), the Virgin flight to Barbados was a relatively pleasant and stress free experience (and ... read more

The big day - Forde Abbey, Near Chard, Dorset Well, the big day finally arrived. So did the piano player, but unfortunately he forgot to bring the CD of the music he had promised to play for the entrance and exit of the bride... Oh well, luckily we had the laptop and speakers then... To start from the beginning; Woke up at 2 am extremely nervous with a heart rate of over 100/min, wondering if Jane had given the rings to Andrew, the best man, or not. Contemplated knocking on her door to wake and ask her, but remembered just how scary a bridezilla could be when woken from sleep, so read myself back to sleep (eventually). Spent a nervous morning getting up and showered/shaved, prior to bumping in to the bride in the corridor (so ... read more
