Middle East » Turkey April 16th 2012

we arrived safe but tired last night and are now in the Pera Palace ...the conference hotel. Its an old beauty built in 1892 right in the center of town. We had some time off today and went sightseeing - saw tons of baklava and turkish delight candy in many stores - guess everyone knows what we'll be bringing back as gifts. Tomorrow is a full day of sessions for Janel so Kelly is going to do tourist things that involve heights and towers.... read more

After the fabulous Fowl Cay and boating in the Exumas, and the odd Eleuthera but still very nice Sky Beach Club, our final hotel for the last two days in Nassau had a lot to live up too...and didn't. So here's the story of the activity filled last two days of our Bahamas trip: Breezes wasn't terrible, but it was still the worst all-inclusive we've stayed at (others were Dreams in Puerto Vallarta, Riu in Cancun, and Contadora Inn in the Pearl Islands...Breezes would have out-ranked the funky Contadora, except that Breezes is 4 times as expensive, while Contadora is charming in it's run down funkiness.) But first, we had to get there. Instead of the 9 seater plane that Flamingo air gave us from Nassau to Staniel Cay, and which our ticket indicated for the ... read more

We’re just about to get back on the tiny tiny plane and go back to Nassau after a lovely five days here at Fowl Cay. We spent most every day on our little boat exploring the fabulously beautiful waters of the Exuma island chain. The boat was a very good one. It cruised at about 35 knots to 40 knots without jumping up and down too much. The trick was to learn to read how the water looked because sometimes it became so shallow that we might get the propeller in the sand and sometimes dark spot were rocks and sometimes just patches of grass. We’re not trying to upload pics to Travelblog because there’s just too many – but Kelly has posted them all on Facebook and here’s the link to see them all. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150212650881888.319091.667256887 ... read more

It’s Sunday and we’re here in the Exuma Cays at Fowl Cay. This is a fantastic place – a private cay with six villas on it plus a restaurant / clubhouse and marina. Each villa gets it’s own private beach, golf cart to get around and – best of all – its own boat. The boat is a 19 ft Angler which is a pointed type boat with a motor on the back that’s connected somehow to controls and a steering wheel in a little sitting area in the middle so to drive it you just steer the steering wheel and apply the throttle – super easy. It goes pretty fast too. It also has a Bimini top to keep the sun off. The island resort was started by a guy who started something called this ... read more

This is our third day at Eluthera. Yesterday we drove down to the south end of the island – definitely less upscale and less inhabited. We saw lots of guys just hanging out in front of dilapidated buildings – probably Haitians. Haitians in Bahamas are like the Mexicans in California – we’re told they’ve come there legally and illegally and they do the jobs Bahamins won’t do (or won’t do for as little money). But it was very interesting. We also saw the Ocean Hole - strange place slightly inland - said to be bottomless and used for free diving competitions. Today we went out with a real estate agent to see places for sale. Kelly told the guy wemight like to get and fix up a place so the first spot was crazy. He drove ... read more

Kelly speaking. I thought I'd add a few details that made an impression on me, and see if I can add a pic or two. The people here are are delightful. The whole place is full of Reggae music, and the people all have reggae accents. The guy we bought hats from in the sweltering bazarre (full of 100s of tiny stalls with individual vendors) eagerly told all all sorts of factoids, personal, historic and random. Historic: Our hotel was once bought by a rich Canadian, Sir Harry Oaks. When Harry arrived in the Bahamas, he revolutionized race relations, by starting to pay blacks the same wages as whites. One day, he went in the British Colonial hotel with a black buddy, and they said they'd serve Harry, but not the other guy. So Harry bought ... read more

Today we are in Eluthera – its name means freedom, and it is the island of the Bahamas furthest out in the Atlantic. It’s long (100 miles) and skinny – at some place you can look both ways and see both the Atlantic and the Caribbean – two very different views. The Atlantic is…well, the Atlantic – dark blue and full of waves. The Caribbean in these parts is bright turquoise, calm and shallow enough to walk hundreds of feet out into. Yesterday we had an interesting day in Nassau. The old town of Nassau is charming and full of shops, but also entirely dependent on the giant cruise ships that come there. For all you big ship cruising types remember that the town you visit is totally different when you’re there than when you’re not. ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas » Nassau June 13th 2011

Well it took a long time to get here but we're in the Bahamas now. The plan was to fly from San Fran to Charlotte NC, arrive about 9pm and spend the night there, then leave again in the am for Nassau. However, there were thunderstorms in Charlotte, so after a lot of circling we got diverted to Greensboro to refuel and didn't get to our hotel in Charlotte until almost 2am. We crashed and got up a few hours later. On to the flight and we arrived about noon today. Today and tomorrow were the planned shopping days in Nassau before we go on to the out islands. Three quarters of the people in the Bahamas live in Nassau - our next biggest city stop is going to be Governor's Bay on Eluthera - about ... read more
