Day 19: Misahualli I slept very well here! It cooled off during the night, so it wasn’t as oppressive, but the sun did wake me up when it rose. For breakfast, we had fruit, bread, and eggs, then we got on the bus. We took these large canoe boats down Rio Napo. Our first stop was an animal sanctuary, Amazoonico. There we go to see parrots, monkeys, tapir, and some other jungle animals. Some of the monkeys were really small and super cute! At this sanctuary, they try to rehabilitate and release animals if they can. It was cool to see these animals and learn about the work that they do. We got back on the canoes and then went tubing! It was refreshing but the tubes got hot pretty quickly since they were black, so ... read more

Day 17: Baños Our hotel had some animals somewhere and roosters woke us up fairly early so there was no sleeping in here. We had breakfast at 8am buffet style. There were a lot of options (eggs, rice, fruit, meat, cheese, cereal, and bread). I wouldn’t consider all of the foods I would want to eat for breakfast, but I found some things I liked. A group of us went to the traditional hot springs. There weren’t naturally formed pools, but the thermal water naturally hot from below ground and the cold water was from the waterfall which was sourced in the mountains. It was a cool experience! The hot water had sulfur in it so it looked yellow, but it felt great. You’re not supposed to stay in the hot water for very long, so ... read more

Day 14: Quito Breakfast this morning was tea/coffee, cantaloupe, a hot sandwich with Crema Fresca and pineapple jam which I really liked, and guava juice which I didn't love. We had been planning on going to the botanical gardens in the park with some friends, but it was raining all morning. So Kim and I had a slow morning which was a nice break. We watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off which I hadn't seen in a while. Our family was gone, but Marian took us to a cheap nail place close to our house so we could get our nails done, but no one was there so we just came home. Kim and I played some cards before lunch. Mama came home from the hospital to eat with us. We had a cooked plantain with cheese, ... read more

Day 11: Quito For breakfast, we had tea/coffee, bananas and plums, and french toast with maple syrup from Canada. After some downtime, Zully, Kim, Thomas, and I went to a park and walked around (Mama was in the hospital so she did not come with us). The weather was nice and we had a great view of part of the city! Then we went with Zully to get her car washed. They did it all by hand and also cleaned the inside. This was interesting to me because I am used to an automated carwash that takes a few minutes. For lunch, we had rice, meat, and potatoes with garlic mayo. They had a couple different flavors of mayo, which I did not know existed. It was actually pretty good. We had a couple hours of ... read more

Day 9: Otavalo For breakfast, we had humitas, which is like cornbread with cheese in the middle, tea, and cranberry juice. At ACLAS, we had devotions, talked about our plans for the next week, and get on a bus to head to Otavalo! It is about a 2-hour drive, but we made a few stops along the way. We stopped at an overlook with a nice view and it was really windy! We stopped at a restaurant and had these really good biscuits they make there as well as mozzarella cheese with caramel. At another stop, there was a store, a nice view, and some llamas. For lunch, we had a short hike to a waterfall and I got a picture in front of it! We ate our packed lunch in a picnic area. Kim and ... read more

Day 7: Quito Today for breakfast we had grilled ham and cheese, tea, orange and banana juice, and an egg. At ACLAS we had another Spanish class and this one was more helpful for me because we worked on phrases, questions, and verbs that would be useful for us to know. We had about an hour's break to relax in the garden, then met as a whole group. We discussed how we felt after taking the trolley the day before. Some people felt uncomfortable and it was good to have time to process the situation since it was new to most of us. Then we gave presentations on different ethnic groups in Ecuador with our house partners. Some of us played games before going home for lunch. Mama was not home, but Marian, our maid, prepared ... read more

Day 5: Mitad Del Mundo For breakfast, we had fruit ( pears, bananas, and mango) as well as a grilled ham and cheese sandwich. Kim and I walked to ACLAS and after a devotional, we took a bus for about 45 minutes to Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world aka the equator). We had a tour to learn about the people who lived in the area and some fun facts about the equator. For example, water does not swirl when it drains on the equator, but if you go a few feet north or south, it will swirl either left or right. I balanced an egg on a nail, so I got a certificate and we also got our passports stamped. Then we drove a very short distance to the historical equator line. This ... read more

Day 3: Quito For breakfast, we had an egg, two plantain balls stuffed with cheese, juice from an Ecuadorian fruit, and tea or coffee. Kim and I walked to ACLAS for the first time with Zully's daughter, who is also named Zully. She speaks English so she was able to talk to both of us easier and explain the route. The walk isn't too bad, about 20 minutes. At ACLAS, we had a short devotional and talked about some logistics of our assignments. Then we went on a walk through Quito to a market. There was so much produce! A wide variety of fruits and vegetables everywhere that were bright and colorful. It smelled sweet next to the fruit. There were also whole roasted pigs, chicken feet, and chicken heads as well as seafood. Then we ... read more

Day 1: Traveling My group met at Newark airport and flew to Fort Lauderdale, Florida which took about 2 hours. We had a 5-hour layover so I walked around the airport, ate food, and did some reading. Our flight to Quito, Ecuador took about 4 hours and we arrived just before midnight. After going through customs, we took a bus to ACLAS, the school/organization that we came through. There we met our hosts. Kim, my house partner, and I are staying with Zully. She has 3 kids, but they are grown up. Zully also has a poodle named Thomas who is 11 years old. Kim's Spanish has been very helpful for communicating since I have only studied German. Our house is nice! We each have our own rooms and a bathroom. My room is at the ... read more
