Well folks, lets hope I don't die in South Africa!

Africa March 10th 2009

So this is a follow up of the last, since I'm horribly behind on my chronicling (is that a word) of my trip. Friday night I went to another get together, which regrettably, I forgot to bring my camera to. Got to meet some Bethelites (Morgan Jessica and Matthew) one of which I had met when we ran into each other out in service! Small world in the truth. Also got to meet Natalie, who everyone was telling me was in a magazine or something but no one remembers where....... On Saturday, John and Arti were taking Simon and Sian (still not sure how to spell her name) around to see sights, so Nina and her friend Megan picked me up for some around the world service. We went first to try to find an English ... read more

Not really, it's okay, but it's still better than the snow that I guess is happening back home! So I've been keeping busy, (and sorry Ileana, I've not been writing EVERY day in the journal) but not frantic busy. There is so much to be done here. Some friends of John and Arti (the couple I'm staying with right now) came to visit. They were at Bethel for a very long time but have recently moved out to a farm about five hours away (fairly close to Kruger, I'm told). While they were here, some other folks came to visit and see them and I got to hear some cool stories about the work in close by lands. Since SA is the largest branch in the area (in the wealthiest country also) they are responsible not ... read more

But I love South Africa!!! On the first day here, I was picked up at the airport by Sister Artie (short for Artemis, she's from Cyrpess!) Cook. It took a bit of work to find her in the airport, seeing as how I'd never thought to ask for a description or picture in the emails! On the way to the house, we stopped at a petroport to get 295 rand of petrol (don't worry, it's only like thirty bucks!) During the drive, Artie informed me that I had been invited to a Brai (BBQ) that evening! I hadn't even been there a day, and I was already invited to a party! When we got to the house, she wanted me to rest up, but I wasn't that tired really. So instead, I went with her and ... read more

Well, the grueling ten hours from London to Joburg (local slang for Johannesburg) are over. It wasn't that bad really, it's just a long time to spend in a metal tube 35,000 feet up. I guess I should start this though with a description of my trip up to this point. As many of you know, I left Portland at about 11:30 on Wednesday the 25th. It turns out that "direct flight" I thought I had to London had not just a stop, BUT A PLANE CHANGE! Okay, so I wasnt' that concerned about it. I stopped in Chicago and was heading to the next gate when I realized, I'm kinda hungry. So I stop at a stand and get some popcorn (which the yellow chese dye didn't come off my hands for a full twelve ... read more

Well, this is it! I'm finally going to be going (funny turn of phrase eh?) to South Africa. If I haven't already mentioned also, I might be making trips into surrounding (or in this case, enclosed) countries like Lesotho. Now, as an American, I thought this countries name would be pronounced Leh-soh-tho, right? WRONG!!!!!! I was speaking with a sister at the Erskines' going away party by the name of Mona Mariott. She happens to have family there and was talking all about.........................................(wait for it, this will be good) Leh-soo-too!!!! In her beautiful accent, it just sounded right. Well, hopefully this is a good enough start to the blog, cause that's all you get for now!!! More when I get there! ... read more
