Sawaee-kop. This is the "New Jordan" writing to you from my teacher's lounge during a much-needed break. I say "New Jordan" because I am now "Jordan Dark." The suntan competition is over here. I win. Funny, the Thais: they spend all their energy avoiding the sun and buying skin-whitening products of all kinds. Meanwhile, Kristin and I walk around half naked, assuming various uncomfortable positions just to brown our butts evenly. So the mission this past weekend (Note: I am post-dating this. It's now the 20th) was to find some sun and sand. Though we can claim to live on an "island," the surrounding rivers don't provide the sandy beaches we were craving. I was all down to go to Pattaya, which is only an hour Southeast of Bangkok. Then the teachers at my school ... read more

This is long overdue. I know. My spelling has not represented a promissing career teaching (English no less). I know. I'll try to do better this time. Small, phonetic words Jordan. Following the storybook/cinimatic weekend that was Kao Yai with a trip to Bangkok, to me at least, seemed a bit regressive. We had done the Bangkok thing, in my eyes that is. Why return to the "Big Mango?" (should be called the 'Big Durien,' for the musty, fecal aroma that occasionally assaults your notrals at random street turns) Well the answer to this question became clearer as the week progressed; that being, we all developed our own distinct reasons for wanting, nay, needing to venture to the capital. Emma wanted to visit Steve. Amy wanted to go shopping. Kristin wanted to go clubbing (and judging ... read more

A new day, a new adventure. That's life on the road. To this point at least. I guess when it ceases to be an adventure, you're no longer on the road at all. At that point you've settled allowing adventure to give way to routine. Well, this has not happened yet. With our first full week of teaching under our belt, a few of us spirited teachers decided to open the pages of our Lonely Planets and seek out a weekend activity worthy of fullfilling our celebratory desires. Thank god I opened up to good old page 448, a page containing a brief but juicy description of Thailand's world famous Kao Yai National Park. If you've ever seen the movie The Beach (also a book) staring Leonardo DiCaprio about a group of young backpackers in ... read more

OK. SO, the last blog didn't exactly pan out. I can't read Thai so I was having a tough time using the blog site over here. Kristin has assured me this blog site is much better AND i can post pictures. Here's the low down so far. I'm in Thailand. I finished my TEFL teacher training course. I think I learned something there, oh yeah, I learned that living in a hotel on the beach for free with 20 awesome kids from all over the world and nothing but free time to explore exotic worlds really is the way to go. The teaching course included 4 real teaching practices in a local buddhist monastary. The first students I ever taught in a classroom were monks in full orange robes. Pretty sweet. There were 12 monks ... read more
