Geo: 48.8459, -67.5255We had a great breakfast at a restaurant just down the street. Hard to believe it was only $10 each considering what we have paid for other meals. The GPS took us out of town with no difficulty. A drive in the country compared to Vancouver. We followed the Trans Canada until just before Rimouski where we diverted to the route which follows the water. There were lots of small waterfront homes - some more unusual than others. There was also a modern day castle complete with cannons.... read more

Geo: 46.8132, -71.2089After a wonderful breakfast we travelled back to Quebec City. Thankfully it is Sunday so minimal traffic but still confusing for the GPS because of the road work.As we departed the island by bridge we were able to see Montmorency Falls. They are 84 metres high. Unfortunately they charge $12 to park in the lot and all we wanted was a picture so the blog picture is from the internet. Our hotel is very quaint and the room is large. The hotel is across the street from City Hall and a 10 minute walk to the Chateau Frontenac. It is a great location but parking was at a public lot across the street. We walked around the Old City including the lower town. As expected it is very touristy. We watched the street performers ... read more

Geo: 46.9374, -70.8743The "long" version of the trip around the island is about 67 K. It is basically quiet 2 lane roads with limited traffic even though it is a Saturday. In many ways the island is like Saltspring but with less shopping or public facilities. In addition to the historical sights there is no shortage of local artists, wineries and we even found a brewery. The Drouin house was very original with the exception of a minimal electrical circuit put in recently to provide light for the visiting tourists. The inhabitants of the house never had electricity or running water. Surprisingly the residents remained in the home even though modern services were available. The Marine Centre explained how ship building was a major activity in the western tip of the island. There was also a facility ... read more

Geo: 46.9374, -70.8743We returned to the airport and called for our rental car. The transaction was smooth and after hooking up the GPS we were on our way out of Montreal via a tunnel which goes under the St. Lawrence. Our route took us around Quebec City to our destination which is a B & B on Île D'Orléans. In 1535 Jacques Cartier called it the Isle of Bacchus because he saw many vines. Natives however called it Minigo which means "bewitched island". The island is considered to be one of the oldest populated areas of the Nouvelle France with more than 300 ancestral families having lived there. Such families now have descendants all over Quebec, Ontario, the Eastern provinces and even the north part of the United States. The island also honours its past by ... read more

Geo: 45.5185, -73.5566We took the subway back downtown and walked through a part of the Eaton's Centre. A large area in downtown Montreal has underground shopping and connecting halls so one does not need to go outside during the winter. Even the Anglican Cathedral now has shopping under the church. We exited to St. Catherine's Street which is one of the main thoroughfares. Large portions of the street are closed to vehicle traffic during the summer months. There is now a large Arts complex with a Modern Art Museum, Opera House and the older Place des Arts.We followed St. Catherine Street back to the loft. Tomorrow we head back to Dorval by bus to pick up the rental car.... read more

Geo: 45.5184, -73.5566We took the subway to the Botanical Gardens which is recognized as one of the largest at 78 hectares. When walking from the subway we passed by the Olympic Stadium which is now used primarily for trade shows. Unfortunately while walking part way through the gardens the rain started. Thankfully we had umbrellas with us. Once finished with the walking circuit we visited the experimental greenhouses.... read more

Geo: 45.5185, -73.5568The subway and bus took us to a couple of interesting areas.Little Italy has been through various transitions and Italian is only one of the many ethnic groups now resident in the area. As one would expect, the churches reflecting the past are still there. We continued on foot into an area known as Rosemont. The locals remember St. Hubert St. as a strip of neon. Now it is a shopping district with canopies over the sidewalk.... read more

Geo: 45.5209, -73.5539The Montreal transit system works very well. With the help of Google transit directions we found our way to St. Joseph's Oratory which is located in Côte de Neiges. Geo: 45.5185, -73.5568At the airport we purchased a 3 day transit pass (less than $20 each) so we have lots of travel options. Today we got the #14 Amherst bus and then transferred to the #11 bus which took us to the top of Mount Royal. We walked from the top of Mount Royal down to St. Laurent Blvd and "dined" at Schwartz's restaurant a landmark Montreal Smoked Meat Place since 1928. Mmmmmmm!Continuing on along St. Laurent Blvd. we ended up walking around parts of Old Montreal before catching the #14 bus back so we could sit back and enjoy an afternoon beer - a travel ritual - and do the blog for now anyway. We will head back to Old Montreal in the evening for dinner and a few night shots.... read more
