Geo: 31.3274, -89.2907From Baton Rouge we headed east towards New Orleans travelling on smaller roads. We stopped in a small community called Madisonville just north of Lake Pontchartrain. There were some very nice homes on an inlet where there was a swing bridge used to permit larger boats to pass through to get to the Lake. This is an area of many gated communities likely inhabited by people who work in New Orleans and use the Pontchartrain bridge which is 24 miles long to commute to the city. At Slidell we headed north again on smaller roads until we reached Hattiesburg which has a civil rights history. Most of the buildings date from the late 1800's on. The city brochure contained self-guided walking tours of both the business district and several housing areas with many very ... read more

Geo: 30.4435, -91.1869This morning we went into Jackson. The Cancer Run for the Cure was being held so most vehicle traffic was restricted. We were lucky to find a parking place and we did a quick tour of the downtown area. From there we headed for Baton Rouge which is an oil town. We passed many refineries along the way into town. There is a very attractive riverfront development but very little housing in the downtown area. In fact most restaurants were closed leading one to believe that little normally happens here on Saturday. There was a Phoenix University Convocation being held at the main performing arts theater downtown. ... read more

Geo: 32.6125, -90.0367We traveled south on the Natchez Trace Parkway which is a 400 mile long two lane road on which commercial traffic is not allowed. It passes through Tennessee, Alabama and into Mississippi. There were a large number of antique cars headed north. The rain at times was so heavy that wipers at high speed could barely keep the windshield clear enough to drive. One of the local radio stations along the way announced that schools were closing in the area and students sent home because of the rain and possible tornado which did in fact occur but fortunately not in our path. We did however have to exit the Parkway lower down because of a large tree which had fallen and was completely blocking the road. The weather improved quickly soon after. We are ... read more

Geo: 36.0599, -86.6717The hotel is about 11 miles from downtown Nashville so we waited until 9 AM before getting on the freeway system. Glad GPS units were invented. Makes navigating much easier. Did a walking tour of the various areas of downtown Nashville including the Printers District which is actually the entertainment area. A newer much larger Music Center is under construction and due to open in 2013. We then headed out to The Hermitage which is the home of the late President Andrew Jackson. It dates back to slavery days. Did a wagon tour of the property as well as the home tour and walking tour. Unfortunately interior photos are not permitted. The weather was quite warm today and we were glad to get back into an air-conditioned car. Tomorrow we will head south because ... read more

Geo: 36.0599, -86.6717The weather today was cooler in the morning but warmed up by mid-day. We traveled into North Carolina and then Tennessee entering into the Blue Ridge Mountain Area. At one point we were at about 2400 feet above sea level and crossed the continental divide. Just before Knoxville we headed north to visit the Museum of Appalachia. This detour was well worth it. There were both indoor and outdoor displays which gave one a great appreciation for the ingenuity of these people and their music. From there we headed to the outskirts of Nashville a trip of about 450 miles today. Tomorrow we visit Nashville. ... read more

Geo: 34.7383, -82.2556Today we traveled inland and north. First stop was a small town - Conway - which had a very nice river-walk. The weather has cooled down but still is short sleeves and shorts. We had about 30 minutes of light rain during the day. Otherwise it has been a mix of sun and cloud and quite windy. Chesterfield is located in what is known in South Carolina as the English District. Although the town dates back to the late 1700's it seems that most of the original buildings have been replaced by newer buildings. The balance of the day was spent in transit through rolling farmland and forested areas. Forestry is one of the local industries supplying lumber and paper mills. Trees here are much smaller when harvested - probably 30 or more trees ... read more

Geo: 33.5508, -79.0417Today we continued to head north passing through Georgetown which is an old industrial town with a steel mill (appears to be abandoned) and an operating pulp & paper mill. Much of the area like a lot of the coast is a collection of home developments probably built in the last 10-15 years. Georgetown had some very nice older homes and a very nice downtown development with a boardwalk. Further along we came to Myrtle Beach which is a holiday playground with a long history. Many older hotels with some newer ones. Likely a Spring Break type of location. Not as attractive as many of the cities along the Florida Coast. There was low level marine fog due to the warm temperatures. We are staying outside of Myrtle Beach in a smaller community called ... read more

Geo: 32.7812, -79.9316We spent about 4 hours walking around the historic district of Charleston. Beautiful old homes dating back to the 1690's. One of the larger homes near the water had recently sold for 28 million. We were able to tour one of these homes but interior pictures were not permitted. The downtown area seems to be primarily residential - no office towers. There was also a large public market. We then drove to Mount Pleasant to view the Boone Plantation which to this day is still a working plantation. The house is the 4th on the site having been built in the 1930's by a Canadian Ambassador. It is currently owned by a brother and sister. The brother resides at the plantation while the sister resides also in California. The tour included the house, grounds ... read more

Geo: 32.7812, -79.9316No pictures today. We spent the day in transit. Ran into major roadwork near Savannah and took a detour on smaller roads. Most of the land mass in this area is low lying swamp. Very flat and meandering rivers everywhere. Lots of swampland for sale - cheap. 5 acres for about $25,000 - $50,000. The weather tonight is quite cloudy with possible rain during the night but should be nice tomorrow. To the north there are hail and tornado warnings overnight. Tomorrow we go into Charleston and will likely do a walking tour. We will be staying tomorrow night at this location and then will decide which direction we will be heading - likely north. ... read more

Geo: 29.2036, -81.0394Headed east to the coast - Fort Pierce and then north to Merritt Island to Melbourne and Cocoa Beach. The beaches in Melbourne were very nice and the sport of the day was body boarding on the waves. Then on to the Kennedy Space Center where we spent several hours. They are preparing for the April 29th shuttle. The tour includes a variety of films and presentations as well as bus rides to shuttle pads, etc. It is amazing the size of the rocket boosters used to get the command module into space. From there we continued to head north to Daytona Beach. Tomorrow we head towards Georgia. ... read more
